Yes, it is over-priced. But you are paying for something that keeps your easily scratched iPod in one place, while it charges.

Keep in mind: you are paying apple $30 because they have great design and do things right. Not many competetors offer a dock, and if they do, they probably are a lot uglier.

Hello all iPod fans! First off, let me say that I am very pleased with my new iPod Nano. I never considered an investment until the Nano. However, I am reviewing the Dock not the iPod. So, let me say that I am very happy with the dock. However, one of the draw backs that will certainly make an impression on the first time buyer is that it lacks a power adapter. You really have to depend on the MAC/PC. However, the iPod Dock does help cut back on space and cables being seen. I recommend this item if you are a stickler for looks and need a quick solution to transferring and charging your iPod and its files. This is the review: 4 out of 5 stars because it does look good, saves time and is a quick fix for transferring files. But does not have power adapter. (JC)

The difference between using the dock vs. connecting directly to my home system via stereo phono plug is dramatic. Don't forget to get a cable, one is not included (if included, I'd give 5 stars).

I expected to have the USB cable and RCA/mini cable with the doc. No, you only get the doc which means you have to use the synch cable you got with the nano for the doc. A block of plastic for 30 bucks. I wanted a dock for my office and to keep the cable that came with the nano in my travel bag. I'm returning it and getting a 3rd party solution.

Also, the way the item was shipped was comedic. The tiny dock box was in a much larger box with one of those sealed air bags...only the sealed air bag was a small version so everything rattled around in the box. The air bag did nothing so the dock box was was beat up from the shipping. The dock wasn't damaged..just plain weird. I expected much more from Apple.

Honestly- at first I didnt not plan on buying the dock at the apple store, but when you look at it and realize that it will simply make your area more clean I decided to buy it. Simple and worthless... not entirely- pointless... maybe- but hey, for people like us that live in tec world it makes those that have it one step higher then everyone else.. am I not right?

The nano dock is fairly useless. Besides a professional look, it serves no extra purpose, especially for $30.00. It must always be connected to my computer to charge, meaning my computer has to always be on. Why cant they make the dock have a power adapter if we wanted to take it on the go? It really sucks if your traveling, especially if you arent taking a laptop. I was thinking I could take the dock to the hotel room and charge it, but obviously I need a computer in order to do so.

Secondly, if I am taking my laptop, I might as well listen to all my songs in iTunes. And furthermore, there's really no point in having the line output, as you can:
A: Play all your iTunes songs on your computer anyway.
B: Plug in a stereo to the headphones output.

In conclusion, the nano dock is utterly useless and a waste.

Well ... the dock does add one feature many might desire--the line out. If you plan to send signal to any amp/speaker setup, the line out is the optimal send as compared to the headphone out.

There is a difference between these 2 ... line out is proper line level w/ relatively flat response (what most equipment wants to "see") ... the headphone out is at least, I believe, EQ'd slightly to compensate for the reponse of headphones -- slightly different ouput level too.

You get the correct line level through the included cable (for playing the Nano through your computer), but the dock is a good thing to have around for other speaker/amp setups.

I definitely prefer the line level in comnination w/ other audio equipment.
