To those saying reviewers giving 1-star are idiots...

    Written by DW from Austin

    Feb 17, 2008

I got this product to connect my macbook to an external monitor, knowing that I already had a DVI-VGA adapter. When I tried to connect the two adapters (mini-DVI to DVI and a DVI-VGA), the pins didn't match up and both are useless. Some reviewers are claiming that this incompatibility should be common knowledge...

Here's the kicker though: on the mini-DVI to DVI product label, it has a graphic showing the pins on the DVI female part and they do NOT match the product. In other words, the label shows that the DVI out should work with my DVI -VGA adapter, but the actual product is missing 4 pins!!!

This product gets a 1-star for BLATANT FALSE ADVERTISING!

    Know your technology

Written by SM from Mission Viejo

For the dummy that stated "the sound output does not go through like the video feed does" ...that's because there is NO audio signal in a DVI cable. Period. Even if you plugged it into a DVI-HDMI adapter, you will still have no sound. The DVI interface contains video signals only, and as the other well-informed poster stated, there are different types of DVI connector; DVI-I, DVI-D, DVI-A. Know what you need to buy before your ignorance makes you write something stupid.

The picture quality worked great on my Mac OS X to my lcd flat screen television set. Except the sound output does not go through like the video feed does. I don't know why but.. this is a major disappointment.

    Why no DVI-I

    Written by MF from Huntsville

    Jan 29, 2008

The usefulness of this adapter is seriously limited by the fact that goes to DVI-Digital rather than DVI-Integrated. The mini-DVI connector on the macbook carries both, why can't apple just include the extra wires in this adapter? There's no reason why not to, and I have to buy two over-priced proprietary adaptors rather than just one.

    mini-DVI to mini-DVI?

    Written by DB

    Jan 28, 2008

This adapter works great, but the cable is too short. The "regular" DVI end and it's mating connector are big and bulky, sitting on my desktop just to the left of my MacBook.

It would be great if Apple would make some mini-DVI (male) to mini-DVI (female) extension cables.

Preferably in a couple of different lengths.
    ~ 1.5 ft
    ~ 3.0 ft
    ~ 6.0 ft

These mini-DVI extension cables could be used with any mini-DVI adaptor type.
    ~ mini-DVI to VGA
    ~ mini-DVI to DVI
    ~ mini-DVI to Video

The mini-DVI connector is also used on the iMac and Xserve. For an iMac, an extension cable would look better along side the USB and Firewire cables than it would with this big DVI connector hanging down off the back.

    Good product,except-----

Written by EA from San Jose

a couple of years ago I tried this on a PC. It didn't work at all. A friend suggested I try again with my iMac 20. I purchased the Apple adapter and obtained a 4' mating cable and it works like a champ. I had a 20" monitor from my PC. So now I have a 40" monitor on my desk top. The mouse goes from one screen to another.
I work in Windows in one and can move the mouse over to do something on the Mac side too.
Works great. Yes I wish the Mac cable were complete, but whoever designed this never had to work in 2 worlds the same time.

It does exactly what it's supposed to. I just wish it was a bit longer though. I had to purchase a M/M DVI-D Dual Link adapter in order to have some elbow room between computers.

    Does what it's meant to

Written by PG from North Vancouver

    Dec 17, 2007

Can't fault it for what it's meant to be. However there's some confusion over using this with a DVI-VGA adaptor. Technically this is possible. However, if you look at the adapter's DVI end there's a flat blade connector. The issue is that it's quite large on this adapter, and doesn't fit certain DVI - VGA adaptor, including (I think) Apple's own. Perhaps this is to encourage you to buy another cable from Apple. However, this is a DVI connector. If you want to connect to VGA, then go buy that one instead or as well as.

I don't understand why people are saying this doesn't work with a dvi to vga. I bought this and combined it with the dvi to vga and it works great. maybe they are trying to use an adapter that look almost the same as this one(a dvi to vga that looks similar) I'm using the dvi to vga with a box and a power cord and I love it.

    Macbook to 32" HDTV LCD

    Written by PG from Toronto

    Dec 11, 2007

First of all I have never seen a product shipped so fast got it in 2 days pretty happy about that. Using this product to connect my macbook to my 32" HDTV LCD and it works great the quality is great with the monster dvi cable I'm using. At first i got the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter and the quality wasn't so hot on the LCD. If your hooking your computer up to a HDTV this is the adapter that you want.

Can't go mini-DVI to DVI to VGA

Written by AA from San Francisco

    Dec 5, 2007

Just to clarify what some folks are complaining about. Normally on computers that have full sized DVI output you can just throw on a "DVI to VGA" converter. Unfortunately, you can't use this product to bring a full sized DVI out and THEN throw a DVI to VGA converter on the end of it. If you want the choice of VGA and DVI from your MacBooks you must buy BOTH the "mini-DVI to DVI" AND the "mini-DVI to VGA" adaptors.

Apple, why, oh why, didn't you just replicate all the typical DVI pins on this adaptor so it really is a converter that would be useful in ALL situations? I love you guys, but sometimes you really aggravate me.

    FALSE ADVERTISEMENT

    Written by EN

On the package of this product, there is a picture of the inputs/outputs. This picture shows the product to be a mini-dvi to dvi-i adapter.

If you open the package, surprise! It's NOT a mini-dvi to dvi-i adapter. In fact, it's a dvi-D adapter.

So, I have no choice but to rate this product a 1, not because it doesn't work with a dvi-d, but because its non-standard outputs and deceptive packaging make it a worthless product because you'll end up buying something that you think should work only to get home and realize that you have to return it.

Apple, please fix your packaging, or pay for the gas and time used to drive back to the store and return this thing.

Very Overpriced, but Works Great. Should be included Free with new Macs

    Written by JS from Buford

    Oct 30, 2007

This adapter is much more expensive than it should be, but there's no real competition, so what can you do? If you need it, you need it. It should be included free with the purchase of a new Mac, if you ask me.

Once connected to an external device, it is automatically detected and works flawlessly to produce a very high quality picture. It works very very well.

    Works great...too short....

    Written by TS from Suwanee

    Oct 29, 2007

We have this adapter connected to our new iMac so we can use a second monitor, a 20" Cinema Display with it's wacky power/ DVI/ USB breakout box. The adapter does exactly what it's designed to do but in my opinion it IS too short. I hate walking into my office and seeing the huge DVI plug hanging off the back of the iMac plus the USB and Firewire plugs for the breakout box of the second monitor. A longer cable length would allow me to move everything under my desk so it stays out of the way and hidden. I like a clean look and this adapter doesn't premote a clutter free desk.I'll most likely buy a longer DVI cord (female to male) so I can at least move the second monitors box and cables under the desk.

    WORKS FINE

    Written by JL from Hilo

    Oct 1, 2007

Despite all the trash reviews on here, I don’t see any problem with it. it does exactly what its sold to do. I bought one to hook my macbook up to my HD tv and it works great. I bought the VGA adapter at first but the picture is noticeably finer on this one. At least I can still use the VGA for projectors and such.

    Dead after one month

    Written by SP

    Sep 29, 2007

    I just don't get it
It worked fine after I purchased this product and my new macbook to plug it into my new Samsung 216BW monitor.
But after just one month, it stopped working. My monitor is perfectly fine (cause it worked in my other computers) I think there is a problem with the adapter.
Now when I plug this into my macbook, my macbook shuts down and starts to reboot....and then does this over and over again, so frustrating.

    Fixed our MacBook Projector Problem

    Written by SB from Irvine

    Sep 20, 2007

We have several MacBooks in our department. None of them worked with our Sharp LCD Projector with a Mini DVI to VGA adapter. This seems to be a common problem with some MacBooks and MacBook Pros. I read that this adapter seemed to work where the VGA adapter failed. It works well for us. If you are having similar problems with your MacBook/Pro, give this a try.
