    Ridiculous product, must be changed to DVI-I

    I bought this adapter fully knowing that it was DVI-D formatted...however i have to join the wailing masses and say, WHY didn't they make it DVI-I??? It would cost them nothing, WOULD NOT the signal quality, WOULD make it completely universal...4 holes apple, you can fix this can't you? One thing is if you are set up with the right equipment at home..another thing entirely is when you have your mac on the road...that makes for 20 pointless extra dollars..and losing quality in addition (DVI to VGA)...terrible planning Apple

    HD on my TV (from my Powerbook).

    i bought a new Samsung HDTV but had no HD content to feed into it until i bought this adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable. now i can watch 720p cinema trailers coming out of my 12" powerbook to my HDTV (1080i is too much for my slow powerbook).

    further, i can also utilise the TV as a 1920 x 1080 secondary display when i edit my home videos and actually see the small lettering (unlike going through composite).

    For all of those people who say "i plug it in and all i get is the desktop.... all you have to do is drag a window to the other desktop.... like iTunes or a web page. What it allows is for you desktop to extend the normal amount and it gives you more space..

    This works well with my Macbook

    This adapter works well with my Macbook and an external monitor. (I had to get a dvi cable to attach it to the monitor but that was not a problem.) For me the idea of screws to hold the connection in place would not work well for this adapter because I have to unplug my laptop to take to my office and screwing it in on out would be a nuisance. I was concerned when I bought the adapter because I have never used an external monitor which I needed to connect via an adapter so I am quite pleased with its functionality.

    It works but....

    My only complaint is that the mini-dvi end does not "click" into place. the weight of the adapter and the large end of the monitor cable tends to pull it partially out. If I pick up my Macbook, it will usually fall out. Apple would be well served to put a locking mechanism onto cables of this type in the future. Even something along the lines of their magnetic power cable.

    Mini-DVI to DVI adapter needs thumscrews

    The design of the mini-DVI to DVI adapter is seriously flawed. A direct DVI connector has thumscrews to maintain a tight connection. The mini-DVI adapter tries to rely on friction alone to hold it in place. However, if the computer is placed near the rear edge of a desk, the weight of the cable will cause the mini-DVI connection to become partially or completely disconnected. It would be good if Apple or a third-party would produce an adapter that would stay connected.

    First of all, I did NOT buy the wrong adapter. This is the only Apple solution for getting graphics out of iMac to my HDTV (via DVI - HDMI cable, of course). Apple, do you realize how ugly, bulky and loose it looks like at the rear side of my iMac now? Seriously, for $19, you could at least make a LITTLE longer version of it (at least not to get stuck in the cable hole), or (better yet) provide an option of mini-DVI to HDMI. You're losing it big time, lately.

    Works fine

    This Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter works fine with a Belkin DVI-to-HDMI cable (TR843LL/A) on my iMac. Just plugged the cables together to my TV and selected 'Detect displays' on the Display preferences window.

    iMac: 24" 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    TV: Samsung UN55B6000 on HDMI input #3

    I thought I'd have to rearrange my HDMI inputs to use input #1 based on comments in the TV user manual concerning DVI to HDMI conversion. I tried input #3 (the next open spot) and got immediate success.

    5 stars? The part was no more expensive than I expected and worked straightforwardly.

    does exactly what Apple says it does

    I bought the adapter, dual-link cable, and a Mitsubishi monitor, and never had a problem with anything. All I did was plug everything in and then went to the display prefs and set how I wanted the monitor and Macbook display to be.

    FYI, do your homework first before buying this adapter. Wikipedia has an excellent page on digital visual interface, and Apple still has specs on all their Macs. If not, you certainly can find it out from someone on the net.

    Any downsides to this? Possibly could be cheaper since it's for older Macs, and maybe a little bit smaller. After all it's an adapter not a cable.

    Keeping it simple

    Wow, what an exercise trying to figure out which cable to get to hook up my MacBook to a DLP projector which has a DVI-I connector. The source of the time and confusion in figuring this out is that Apple does not provide the technical specification for their mini-DVI to DVI connector (which it turns out is a mini DVI-D male to DVI-D female dual link). Once you know that, it's easy to figure out the rest.

    The bottom line is as follows: Purchase from Apple the mini-DVI to DVI connector. Then from an internet vendor, purchase a male DVI-D to male DVI-D dual link digital cable at a length of your choice (but less than or equal to 25 feet).

    Why can't Apple save all of us countless time and effort by just giving the technical specifications for their connectors? Calling the Apple store to get this information was useless as the people working there had no clue.

    Stop Complaining!! Its an ADAPTER!

    I can't believe everyone on here is getting all up in arms about the cord length...ITS AN ADAPTER!!!! not a cord. You dont see a USB to PS2 adapter being 6 feet long...I think this thing is a GREAT ADAPTER...Works great with my monitor and the CORD I bought to use with this ADAPTER! Kudos Apple, once again.

    Be careful - will not work with Belkin Cable

    This adapter's female DVI connector is missing the four holes for the analog signals.

    Unfortunately, the male DVI connectors on the Belkin 10-foot DVI Display cable (TC377LL/A) also sold on this website has prongs for these signals, so the two cable ends will not mate.

    Does not work with DVI to VGA adapter

    For those of you like me that have piles of DVI-to-VGA you are out of luck. This thing will not help you as it is missing the four pins (or rather holes) that carry the VGA signal. Get a mini-DVI to VGA.

    No sound on your MacBook to HDMI TV hook-up?

    It took me a while to figure this out - buy I got it working now. The MacBooks mini dvi port only supports video, not sound.
    But this plug works great, just be aware that you will still need an extension because this plug is way too short. I use a dvi extension cable with two male plugs (my tv has a female receptor). You could use the 3m DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital Video Cable from Cables to Go.

    To get the sound, you just need to add a 3.5mm Stereo Audio Cable M/M (Make sure your tv has one, but my 2007 LCD TV did).

    Now you have video AND sound.

    Get the right cable

    Does it's job well. Just be advised, it goes from mini-DVI to DVI-D. If using it with a KVM setup you will need to connect it to a DVI-D cable (Pure Digital Signal), not the common DVI-I (DVI plus Analog signal) cable that comes with most switches, as it won't accept the analog pins (the Belkin cable sold on this site is DVI-I).

    Why can't Apple standardize their ports?

    This is the 2nd time I've bought the wrong adapter. If Apple is going to use their own proprietary ports, the least they can do is make all their own products the same silly proprietary port.

    It is a great product. I wish the MacBook had a DVI port instead of mini-dvi as it is annoying having to have a mini-dvi on your desk period, or if you bring your notebook to a meeting/presentation.. don't forget the adapter.. so I bought two, one for my travel case one for my desk.. just to make sure I don't forget it.

    And to the people saying it is "too short". Uhh, this is an adapter not a cable.. big difference.. it expects you to already have the cable.. the adapter is just the little link between your MacBook and your LCD monitor's cable.

    Can't go mini-DVI to DVI to VGA

    Just to clarify what some folks are complaining about. Normally on computers that have full sized DVI output you can just throw on a "DVI to VGA" converter. Unfortunately, you can't use this product to bring a full sized DVI out and THEN throw a DVI to VGA converter on the end of it. If you want the choice of VGA and DVI from your MacBooks you must buy BOTH the "mini-DVI to DVI" AND the "mini-DVI to VGA" adaptors.

    Apple, why, oh why, didn't you just replicate all the typical DVI pins on this adaptor so it really is a converter that would be useful in ALL situations? I love you guys, but sometimes you really aggravate me.

    iMac to HDTV

    Most HDTV had HDMI inputs now, so Just hook up iMac =>Mini Dvi to Dvi cable=>use Dvi to HDMI cable & Viola!! stunning picture quality just go to Display & use Mirror Display or What ever U perfer, choose Display size!!
    Even 1920×1080 Full HD!!!

    Know your technology

    For the dummy that stated "the sound output does not go through like the video feed does" ...that's because there is NO audio signal in a DVI cable. Period. Even if you plugged it into a DVI-HDMI adapter, you will still have no sound. The DVI interface contains video signals only, and as the other well-informed poster stated, there are different types of DVI connector; DVI-I, DVI-D, DVI-A. Know what you need to buy before your ignorance makes you write something stupid.
