Reviews for Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adaptor

SImple as. I went through some of the pains as many others review here. Having macs for years but never using a display. Having my most recent Intel core duo 2007 mac book and wanting to hook it up to most anything, I finally I bought the apple mini dvi to RGA, the mini dvi to svideo & composite(RCA), and this mini dvi to dvid. Also found I was dealing with an apple female connector and that for most applications had to buy a male dvid to hdmi. Awesome now i can pretty much hook it up to anything. What i found out later was that it didn't matter whether I had the DVI option or not...No sound goes out the video port on macs...Lame. No matter which you use you will always be hooking up both a video adapter and an 1/8 to 1/8 male stereo plug to som headphone jack on whatever you want the sound to come out of. SO having option to hook it up to hdmi does nothing but supposedly give you a better quality video signal. One which I can't tell on anything I have played it on. Used apple for years but unless you are willing to spend 8 grand on apple tv and apple movies you can't use front row easily with regular tv products or simply plug it into yout AUDIO VIDEO system and enjoy..you must use 2 cables.

I use this adapter to connect my 2008 MacBook to a "DVI to HDMI Adapter" which then connects to my HDTV. The product works great and I've never had a problem getting it to display everything properly on my TV. However, the connection from the "Mini DVI to DVI Adapter" to my MacBooks Mini DVI port is very poor (it's not a tight connection)...it can easily be knocked or pulled out. I just wish Apple would have made the connection more solid, other than that it works great.

This adapter works well with my Macbook and an external monitor. (I had to get a dvi cable to attach it to the monitor but that was not a problem.) For me the idea of screws to hold the connection in place would not work well for this adapter because I have to unplug my laptop to take to my office and screwing it in on out would be a nuisance. I was concerned when I bought the adapter because I have never used an external monitor which I needed to connect via an adapter so I am quite pleased with its functionality.

My only complaint is that the mini-dvi end does not "click" into place. the weight of the adapter and the large end of the monitor cable tends to pull it partially out. If I pick up my Macbook, it will usually fall out. Apple would be well served to put a locking mechanism onto cables of this type in the future. Even something along the lines of their magnetic power cable.

Well I wanted to break out of my MacBook and purchase only 1 adapter to break out with and allow me to use for an external monitor. So, I chose the mini-DVI to DVI and if I needed to convert to SVGA I could use the typical adapter I use with all other computers I might hook up to my HDTV. Well, Apple does not like efficient functionality as much as mutiple revenues of each of there little typically non-standard trinkets! The trouble I encountered is that the DVI side does not match the 4 little pins at the ground side(large flat pin) of the connector. They have filled that with plastic to inhibit this connection. This facilitates the need to buy the official SVGA connector to break out in this manner. simply, annoying.

Apparently, it was designed by the same geniuses that came up with the connection for the power supplies.

i got this adapter when i bought my mac mini and it does what is supposed to but it does fall out of the port on my mini quite often. i have my computer on the keyboard part of my desk because theres no room on my desktop for it. its probably because of how short the platform for the keyboard is and the dvi cable does tend to hang there. if they put screws on the mini dvi side that would be perfect. and the whole digital only problem did get in the way once. it took me quite a bit of frustration to finally realize that my analogue cable wouldn't fit into it. and why isn't there a hdmi adapter? that would be amazing. work perfect on my 46" samsung instead of a series of adapters.

I bought the adapter, dual-link cable, and a Mitsubishi monitor, and never had a problem with anything. All I did was plug everything in and then went to the display prefs and set how I wanted the monitor and Macbook display to be.

FYI, do your homework first before buying this adapter. Wikipedia has an excellent page on digital visual interface, and Apple still has specs on all their Macs. If not, you certainly can find it out from someone on the net.

Any downsides to this? Possibly could be cheaper since it's for older Macs, and maybe a little bit smaller. After all it's an adapter not a cable.

First of all, I did NOT buy the wrong adapter. This is the only Apple solution for getting graphics out of iMac to my HDTV (via DVI - HDMI cable, of course). Apple, do you realize how ugly, bulky and loose it looks like at the rear side of my iMac now? Seriously, for $19, you could at least make a LITTLE longer version of it (at least not to get stuck in the cable hole), or (better yet) provide an option of mini-DVI to HDMI. You're losing it big time, lately.
