Video Adapters should last longer than 4 months

Written by RS from Ann Arbor

    Sep 20, 2005

If you order one of these treat it very gently, be careful how you pack it when traveling, etc. My first one broke in 4 months (the wires internal to the rubber cable enclosure shorted - so the screen would drop out certain colors). And then, when I ordered and paid for a replacement, the wrong adapter was shipped to me. The sales web page does not bother to mention that there are different versions of the PowerBook G4, which use different types of video ports (mini-DVI and mini-VGA). Make sure you know which one you need before ordering. An improved sales web page would at least show all the VGA adapters in one place, so one could see all the choices.

    Lasted over two years

    Written by CM from Missoula

I assume this is the one I have because it says 12 inch PB G4 in the description. Mine just recently, after more than two years, began to loose its connection. It has been indispensable to me for teaching and I am ordering a new one right now.

    Apple Store Man sucks!

    Written by CD from Scottsdale

    Mar 29, 2006

I just went way out to my "local" apple store and I told the guy working there that I had an iMac G4 and I wanted to get a mini DVI to VGA adapter for it. He showed me this one and I asked at LEAST 3 times if he was absolutley sure that it would work and he said "yes" everytime. I went all the way back home and I try to hook it up and it doesn't fit!! I'm really ticked off!

    video adapter cables in general

    Written by OK from Arlington

    May 16, 2006

I have two ibooks and I can confirm the reviewers complaints about the durability of the "to VGA" adapters. Both of mine failed (each one had an internal cable broken). Also the one I tried as a replacement had had the same problem. I bought a new one and the first thing, I did is stiffen the cable with tape and handle it very carefully. It is the bending which kills these video adapters rather quickly.

    Doesn't support Windows mode

Written by SC from San Francisco

Although this adapter works perfectly in MacOS, I can't get it to work in Windows Mode on a MacBook Pro running Boot Camp. Anybody know of a device driver in beta test that I can use?

To use this in Windows, you need to find some drivers for your video card that support monitor output.... Not sure where you should look, but with some digging you should find something I would think

Luv it and YES it does work in Windows XP Pro

    Written by TS from London

Got my Cable about a week ago. Plugged it and it worked perfectly. I just installed boot camp, with Windows XP Pro and running Dual monitor ( Extended Desktop ) perfectly. Forgot to say I am running the new Macbook and loving every minute of it. The only reason why I have windows on it is because I have clients I show this to every day.

    Bridging two standards

    Written by PB from Oakland

    Jul 18, 2006

We use these a lot with our 12" powerbooks, they haven't had any problems at all. However, a warning to those using DVI-based projectors - make *sure* to use a mini-DVI to DVI instead of DVI to VGA to the projector's DVI to VGA cable. This adapter cannot make heads or tails of a converted projector signal, only the original signal.

    OK, but not Energy-star compliant

    Written by DC from OTTAWA

    Aug 7, 2006

I've been using an LG LCD panel as an external display on my first-gen TiBook. Bought a new MacBook, and ordered the Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor so I could continue to use my LCD display. The Adapter works fine, but with one problem - when I sleep (or power-down) the MacBook, the LCD display does not go into low-power mode like it did on the TiBook. The LCD stays on in full-power mode, with a little pop-up warning "no signal". This is disappointing, since Apple claims the MacBook is Energy-star compliant. The MacBook may be, but its accessories should be as well.

Works fine for me. I can't speak for its durability (haven't had it long enough), but as long as you make sure you've picked the right one, it should work fine.

    A MUST HAVE!

    Written by DO from Plymouth

    Sep 19, 2006

The adapter is just a simple pair of plugs and a cable. What's truly amazing, though, is what OS X can do with it. I never would have known that OS X has dual monitor support built right in. I can have two monitors (the one on lid of my 12" PowerBook and the other one on my desk) then have them arranged any way I want them (side-by-side, top-to-bottom) and pick which one has the menu bar and dock. Or, if you are using it with a projector, you can have both of them mirror one another. Configuration is completely idiot-proof (if anyone can break something, I can.). This is extremely cool. If you use your Apple notebook at your desk a lot, this feature alone makes it worth getting another monitor and one of these adapters. Get a keyboard and mouse as well. You also can't use a projector without one of these adapters.

    Works great!

I got this adapter so I could hook up my macbook to my hdtv. Everything works as advertised and I even tried seeing if I could output when booting in windows XP and I was pleasantly surprised to see there were no issues extending or mirroring the desktop onto the tv.

It works great for my MacBook to my old Dell display. I can't get it to take up the full space on the Dell screen, though. I guess because it needs to be proportional to the MacBook display.

    BootCamp XP Problem

    Written by DR from Lancaster

Hi, i love hooking the laptop up to the tv, n turning Mirrored Image off. Installed XP Home last night, and thought....Hmmmm maybe i can get M.A.M.E. Killer Instinct on TV!! (Since XP runs like a dream) I plug into my Mini-DVI, and NOTHING but sounds n glitches.. Works GREAT in OSX. Not so sure about XP... (this product gets a deducted star since older laptops had the S-Video built in, without paying the $20)

    . . .

    Written by TM from Lakewood

The Adapter works, but we knew that.

This came with the ibook but now costs $19. This is not an accessory, it is a necessity. All other laptops can be plugged into an external monitor without having to pay $19 for an adapter. Pretty upsetting, Apple's been getting on my nerves with charging extra for something that should come with the laptop or ipod. Examples: Ipod originally came with a firewire cable, usb cable, and a/c adapter. Now comes with USB cable and costs $30 for the a/c adapter!

    frustrated person.

Written by JF from new haven

i just came back from nyc to my home in connecticut after buying a
"mini dvi" to vga adapter for my ibook g4.guess what...IT DOES NOT FIT!!! what is the deal with mac making different mini dvi adapters that look excactly the same but in reality they are a nano meter wider than the other one that, unless you know this, looks like the right one for your machine.heres a novel idea , apple inc...stop trying to be so different, to be so original, that you make longtime customers or any customer for that matter, like myself, get so fed up that they "being me , for whom i can only speak but are surely not alone on this matter" decide to switch to PC just for sanitys sake.by the way those "mac man vs pc man" commercials speak volumes...more than you could have ever known...

    signed,frustrated pc,i mean mac person!
