For the most part it is pretty useful for connecting your macbook to your hdtv. But I wish the one end of the cable fit a little more securely in my computer.

This product does have a limited life span especially if treated poorly. however since apple is an awesome company all of these converters are under a year warranty if it breaks within that year simply bring the receipt to any store they will quickly and easily get you a new one free of charge with a new year warranty. and if it breaks after the year... well than u still got your moneys worth it's only 20$

Ive been reading these reviews about the cable being too short and well to all those ignorant people out there its pretty obvious you need another cable in between the adapter to the source being a TV or projector. Overall this product works fine on my sharp tv

    Use your VGA cable

Is this guy from Langley for real??? CP you need a VGA cable between the Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter and the VGA monitor itself. Just like you need a VGA cable between a pc's VGA port and a VGA monitor.

It works for me ... but..

    Written by PP from Hyderabad

It has worked for me stright away !!
im using a KVM swith to switch between my Vista Desktop and macbook (inter core duo / 13.3" white) .
and when i adjusted the display settings of external LCD monitor (Samsung syncmaster 920nw (19")) to suite the resolution which is the best match.. im amazed by the display.

however, when i returned to Vista the entire display settings got changed / streched ..etc.
i thought the resolution / strech adjustments were soft updates from macbook display / configuration :(

Excellent - but be good at taking care of it, it can damage easily

    Written by GD from Cincinnati

    Aug 18, 2008

I originally paid $30 for this, but it appears to be $20 now. If the cable is bent, it may start to work unreliably. When my cable is bent a certain way, the screen turns a blue tint even though you can still read everything. Then I move the cord slightly and it fixes itself. So be very careful when transporting this cable so that you do not damage it.

Even though spaces works wonderfully in leopard, i felt i needed a bit more space for some projects i work on. I had an extra LCD screen and figured I'd give this cable a shot, and it works perfectly. I now have more room to work, and no problems with the cable. The only thing is the cable could be longer, and a bit more secure when inserted into the mini-dvi port..I barely move the computer and it slips out.

    Won't fit ibook

    Written by BW from Nanaimo

    Apr 19, 2008

Remember, that the ibook does not have a mini-dvi port, it actually has a mini-VGA port (different adapter), so this will not fit it. I made this mistake when I first tried to hook up an ext. monitor..

Connecting to Samsung 32 inch LCD TV

    Written by SS

    Apr 7, 2008

Wanted to connect my Macbook (intel duo core) to my 32 inch LCD.

Purchased this adapter and plugged it to a longer monitor cable connected to the VGA port at the back of the TV.

Settings of monitor set at 1366 x 768 and it was simply perfect.

Resolution was spot on and proportions was correct. Only thing is that sound still came from the Laptop. This can be overcome by connecting the Macbook to external speakers via 3.5 mm jack.

As this was meant to project image on my TV which it did without much hassle, I have to say it does what it is suppose to do as an adaptor. But no other features. So I have to give it 4 stars cos it is just a simple device like a spoon. U cant give a spoon 5 stars for being able to bring food to your mouth right?

    works a treat

I guess this is less a review of the adapter and more a review of my macbook... i'm still astounded at the bang-4-buck with my cheapy macbook. I recommend reading a few reviews and troubleshooting blogs just to make sure the adapter will suit your monitor/mac setup. I have a cheap and nasty AOC LM923 monitor and the budget model macbook, plugged it in and turned it on and hey presto it worked 1st time... no drivers or settings issues (this use to take me 2 days to get working with linux)... you just need to go into your system preferences and config it how you like (very easy to use GUI to help out with orientation, resolution, etc)

Well i bought it and it is wonderful!!!my only problem with it is that if you have a normal full screen non-apple display it is hard to get the image to fill the whole screen and if it does parts of your dash board will be cut out and crammed together

I love it, but I have only had it for a few weeks....

Written by LW from North York

I got this so my wife could use our MacBook with an old 19" Samsung monitor I had gathering dust since I retired the PC in favour of an iMac.

It took me a few minutes of Googling and research to get comfortable with setting the display up and running the MacBook in clamshell mode, but once I got the hang of it I got excellent display resolution (considering the age and quality of the monitor). I haven't tried anything elaborate like running two monitors at once to provide a bigger workspace, but for our purposes we are happy.

Several weeks later we are passing the old PC to a family member, and have replaced the monitor with a 22" LG Flatron, which does indeed have a DVI input, but this adapter really does the job. The LG is by no means one of the much more expensive Apple Cinema monitors, but it serves our purposes well enough and we are satisfied the adapter in question is doing a fine job.

We take heed of the concerns raised regarding durability. The two plugs are connected by a short and rather stiff little cable, and we suspect that bending can lead to internal shorts and lost video or compromised quality. We treat the thing with kid gloves, and since the thing is so inexpensive we may pick up a spare for future use if this one croaks at an inopportune time. If the construction is indeed as fragile as some users claim, the design is less than perfect.

Since we feel the need to treat this adapter so gingerly in order to avoid shorts and damage, we take away one star. But in terms of what it does and the extra pleasure it has given us with the MacBook, it is top notch.

    Works on 13" Macbook but...

    Written by RR

    Sep 12, 2007

I plugged the mini-dvi to vga adapter into my 13" Macbook and 22" vga monitor and...nothing. I called Applecare and they didn't have a clue. Display settings did nothing. The secret: If you choose "put display on the menu bar" and then click on the icon, you get the option of "mirror." "Mirror," as an option, does not appear on the display settings in System Preferences. Bizarre. There seem to be infinite models of Macbooks and iBooks out there and different models work/respond differently to the adapter. And Applecare seems unaware of this. And given what others say, I'll wrap mine in duct tape. It works just fine now.

    Love it, but...

    Written by RF from Pasadena

    Aug 5, 2007

This is a great product, BUT... after plugging it in, it took me a really long time to figure out how to get it to show my MacBook desktop on my TV. I'm not the most technologically gifted individual, but in case anyone else has trouble, here's what you need to do: Go to System Preferences, click on displays, then "bring displays forward," then click the "mirror" box. Also, in response to that last review about it being too short, this is an ADAPTER, not a cable.

    Compatibility issue

    Written by SA from Lethbridge

    Feb 27, 2007

    Although the copy above states:
"The Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4."
The adapter that came (and works) with my 12" Powerbook G4 (867 MHz) has a different plug configuration than the one on my MacBook. The two are not interchangable. The description could stand to be more specific regarding _which_ models of PBG4 are compatible.
Both models have worked like a charm for me.

    BootCamp XP Problem

    Written by DR from Lancaster

Hi, i love hooking the laptop up to the tv, n turning Mirrored Image off. Installed XP Home last night, and thought....Hmmmm maybe i can get M.A.M.E. Killer Instinct on TV!! (Since XP runs like a dream) I plug into my Mini-DVI, and NOTHING but sounds n glitches.. Works GREAT in OSX. Not so sure about XP... (this product gets a deducted star since older laptops had the S-Video built in, without paying the $20)

It works great for my MacBook to my old Dell display. I can't get it to take up the full space on the Dell screen, though. I guess because it needs to be proportional to the MacBook display.

    Bridging two standards

    Written by PB from Oakland

    Jul 18, 2006

We use these a lot with our 12" powerbooks, they haven't had any problems at all. However, a warning to those using DVI-based projectors - make *sure* to use a mini-DVI to DVI instead of DVI to VGA to the projector's DVI to VGA cable. This adapter cannot make heads or tails of a converted projector signal, only the original signal.
