problems with miniDisplayPort to VGA adapter

    Written by AT from Madison

    Jul 9, 2009

My mDP worked for about a week before failing completely. I wasted a lot of time then went to the nearest Apple store. No questions asked, no receipt required -- they replaced it with a new one that works...so far.

be careful to get the correct adapter for 13 inch macbook

    Written by EH from Dublin

    Jun 16, 2009

This adapter does not fit the new 13 inch macbook even though it says it does in the ad. For this you need the mini displayport to VGA adapter. Don't make the same mistake i did. That said they sent me out the correct one free of charge.

Be careful if you have a new iMac

    Written by RN from Harrogate

    May 1, 2009

Despite what it says in the description of this connector it does NOT fit the latest model of iMac (Intel Core Duo) - by which I mean the 20" or 24" screen ones.

These models now have the Mini Displayport connector (even though the website does not mention the iMac in that cable's description).

I had to replace both the cables I had bought with my new iMac based on what it says on the website. Good service from Apple though - the new cable arrived 2 days later!

    Be careful and cautious!

Great product. However, be careful. This is a fragile piece of technology. After about a year of use, the video is now pink and flickers between blue and normal. Periodically if you place a book of some sort on it, it won't do such a thing. Good, overall.

    adapter

    Written by JH from columbus

This product is good, it works as intended, it is only meant to be an adapter but i would have to agree, i wish the cord was longer and i wish it stayed in better, some kind of a clip or something would help. It would be really cool if apple made this a cord that connected directly to the monitor, so you wouldn't have to have 4 inches of cord followed by a large plug, it would be more sleek.

    ok but could be better

    Written by RB from Mauston

Well, I'm a college student and have loved all the Apple products I have used, but I was a little disappointed in Apple with this product. The product works exactly as intended, however, I was disappointed that this product is so small. The chord is less than 4 inches long, and seriously, what is that going to reach to connect to? Also, the VGA end is female, so you almost have to go drop ANOTHER 20 bucks on a male to male VGA chord to finish hooking things. So, for what Apple is saying they'll give you for 20 plus shipping, your spending roughly 50 bucks on...and that really frustrates me, since i need to pay tuition and things too. So, if you buy this product, expect to drop about 30 more bucks on additional cables than intended.

    good product, but no sound

    Written by LM from Bath

    Jun 3, 2008

I recently purchased this product because I was trying to watch my favorite TV show online on my TV from my computer. I called apple, because I couldn't find anywhere that clearly stated that it would or wouldn't transfer sound as well as video. The sales person told me it would definitely transfer sound in addition to video. I got the adapter and a vga cable. The picture showed up perfectly, I didn't even have to change any settings. But, I couldn't hear anything from the TV. So please note, you will still need an RCA to headphone jack cable.

    not full resolution

    Written by MN from Edmonton

    Feb 13, 2008

Beware if you're hooking up to a large monitor. According to the tech specs, the Macbook supports up to 1920x1200 on an external display. But buried in the manual it says this connector will only provide 1600x1200. Fortunately my monitor has inputs for both VGA and DVI, or I'd be angry!

    Cord is way too short

    Written by CW from Birmingham

    Aug 3, 2007

The cord works perfectly fine . The only problem is the cord is only 6 inches long. That is not long enough to do anything with. So then you have to go buy an extender cable thats another $20 when you just bought this cable for $20. So thats minus 2 stars for the lengh of the cable.

Great product, but not built to last

    Written by SS from Denville

    Jul 19, 2007

Bought this adapter with my Macbook when the Macbook was released last year. It has worked great until now, when the monitor starts to fade/flicker and I have to bend the little cable until it stabilizes. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find anyone else who makes these adapters, so I'll have to continue paying $19 every time my adapter goes bad.

    mini-dvi ambiguity

    Written by MB from kensington

    Feb 16, 2007

the unannounced & visually negligible difference between mini-dvi sockets for ibook and macbook is a serious issue. i have been in the position of rescuing a visiting speaker's PC presentation by offering my laptop only to discover that the "mini-dvi adaptor" i already owned ( ibook ) did not fit my macbook. the reputation of the mac for ease and adaptability suffered. it needn't have.

To use this in Windows, you need to find some drivers for your video card that support monitor output.... Not sure where you should look, but with some digging you should find something I would think

    video adapter cables in general

    Written by OK from Arlington

    May 16, 2006

I have two ibooks and I can confirm the reviewers complaints about the durability of the "to VGA" adapters. Both of mine failed (each one had an internal cable broken). Also the one I tried as a replacement had had the same problem. I bought a new one and the first thing, I did is stiffen the cable with tape and handle it very carefully. It is the bending which kills these video adapters rather quickly.
