    good product, but no sound

    Written by LM from Bath

    Jun 3, 2008

I recently purchased this product because I was trying to watch my favorite TV show online on my TV from my computer. I called apple, because I couldn't find anywhere that clearly stated that it would or wouldn't transfer sound as well as video. The sales person told me it would definitely transfer sound in addition to video. I got the adapter and a vga cable. The picture showed up perfectly, I didn't even have to change any settings. But, I couldn't hear anything from the TV. So please note, you will still need an RCA to headphone jack cable.

    Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter

This is an amazing product. I just plugged it in and it worked perfectly. There was no need to setup anything or install any drivers. If you are looking for more space and need to plug in another monitor, I highly recommend it to everyone in the apple family.

    A flawed design

    Written by PA from cary

    Apr 20, 2008

First of all, could they make this cable any shorter? After laying down 20 bux i had to find a radio shack to get a vga extension cable for this cable.... then, it turns out that the mini dvi connecter has just about zero connection strength. move the cable just slightly and out comes the dvi connector... whoever designed this should feel ashamed!

    Won't fit ibook

    Written by BW from Nanaimo

    Apr 19, 2008

Remember, that the ibook does not have a mini-dvi port, it actually has a mini-VGA port (different adapter), so this will not fit it. I made this mistake when I first tried to hook up an ext. monitor..

This is the worst product of all times except for Windows 98. I bought it and it worked for 3 months then stopped working, completely. Absolute junk.

Connecting to Samsung 32 inch LCD TV

    Written by SS

    Apr 7, 2008

Wanted to connect my Macbook (intel duo core) to my 32 inch LCD.

Purchased this adapter and plugged it to a longer monitor cable connected to the VGA port at the back of the TV.

Settings of monitor set at 1366 x 768 and it was simply perfect.

Resolution was spot on and proportions was correct. Only thing is that sound still came from the Laptop. This can be overcome by connecting the Macbook to external speakers via 3.5 mm jack.

As this was meant to project image on my TV which it did without much hassle, I have to say it does what it is suppose to do as an adaptor. But no other features. So I have to give it 4 stars cos it is just a simple device like a spoon. U cant give a spoon 5 stars for being able to bring food to your mouth right?

I use the adapter to connect a macbook to multimedia projectors at schools where I do presentations on the landmine and cluster munition issues. I've been using it for close to a year and have not had any problems.

Great but doesn't last as long as it should.

This cable is first of all annoying to use because of its way of becoming easily detached at the wrong times. But it worked great for about 6 months then it suddenly screws up and turns the monitor color purple and after a minute of fidgeting with it it will work... then a minute later it wont. Needs improvement

Works perfect, even with a KVM switch!!!

    Written by SS from Galesburg

    Mar 6, 2008

I bought this cable for my Intel based iMac. I have a PC and the iMac sitting side-by-side on the same desk, so I decided to use a KVM switch to be able to use the VGA monitor with my Mac when needed (I do some musical production and dual monitors helps with the work flow). I plugged in the mini-DVI to VGA cable and it works like a charm. I am now able to use the extra VGA monitor for my PC and for my Mac. It switches between the two without any problems.

Shoddy quality for such an expensive cable

    Written by BD from Portland

My mini-DVI to VGA adapter is terrible. It worked fine for a few months, but then started having problems. The color channels don't all stay connected.. sometimes the screen turns green or magenta or blue. It's truly a poor piece of equipment. I haven't even moved it from its original location.. it stays connected to my laptop 99% of the time. And, of course, since this is apparently a proprietary specification (mini-DVI), I'm forced to buy another one of these terrible cables. Thanks Apple for pulling a Microsoft on us!

    works a treat

I guess this is less a review of the adapter and more a review of my macbook... i'm still astounded at the bang-4-buck with my cheapy macbook. I recommend reading a few reviews and troubleshooting blogs just to make sure the adapter will suit your monitor/mac setup. I have a cheap and nasty AOC LM923 monitor and the budget model macbook, plugged it in and turned it on and hey presto it worked 1st time... no drivers or settings issues (this use to take me 2 days to get working with linux)... you just need to go into your system preferences and config it how you like (very easy to use GUI to help out with orientation, resolution, etc)

    not full resolution

    Written by MN from Edmonton

    Feb 13, 2008

Beware if you're hooking up to a large monitor. According to the tech specs, the Macbook supports up to 1920x1200 on an external display. But buried in the manual it says this connector will only provide 1600x1200. Fortunately my monitor has inputs for both VGA and DVI, or I'd be angry!

Well i bought it and it is wonderful!!!my only problem with it is that if you have a normal full screen non-apple display it is hard to get the image to fill the whole screen and if it does parts of your dash board will be cut out and crammed together

Does what it's supposed to do

I use it to extend the desktop of my 17-inch (Intel Core 2 Duo) iMac onto a large 1600x1200 CRT. It works perfectly with no hassle. The iMac's System Preferences Displays panel recognizes the monitor (which is a Sun branded Sony tube) by name; I didn't think it could do that with a VGA CRT, but it works. The cord length is exactly right to hide the ugly connection to the VGA cable behind the iMac stand.

I love it, but I have only had it for a few weeks....

Written by LW from North York

    Jan 27, 2008

I got this so my wife could use our MacBook with an old 19" Samsung monitor I had gathering dust since I retired the PC in favour of an iMac.

It took me a few minutes of Googling and research to get comfortable with setting the display up and running the MacBook in clamshell mode, but once I got the hang of it I got excellent display resolution (considering the age and quality of the monitor). I haven't tried anything elaborate like running two monitors at once to provide a bigger workspace, but for our purposes we are happy.

Several weeks later we are passing the old PC to a family member, and have replaced the monitor with a 22" LG Flatron, which does indeed have a DVI input, but this adapter really does the job. The LG is by no means one of the much more expensive Apple Cinema monitors, but it serves our purposes well enough and we are satisfied the adapter in question is doing a fine job.

We take heed of the concerns raised regarding durability. The two plugs are connected by a short and rather stiff little cable, and we suspect that bending can lead to internal shorts and lost video or compromised quality. We treat the thing with kid gloves, and since the thing is so inexpensive we may pick up a spare for future use if this one croaks at an inopportune time. If the construction is indeed as fragile as some users claim, the design is less than perfect.

Since we feel the need to treat this adapter so gingerly in order to avoid shorts and damage, we take away one star. But in terms of what it does and the extra pleasure it has given us with the MacBook, it is top notch.

Apple have got a little flaky these days...

    Written by WE from Knoxville

    Jan 14, 2008

I got this adapter shortly after my MacBook, so that I could do presentations and other such things, as well as using the same external monitor I used with my old laptop, and at first I was a little depressed, because the adapter cost $20, half the price of the cable from my monitor to the computer. It worked well enough, however, so I was happy, at least until I had the product for a few months, and the quality of the picture started deteriorating unless the adapter was placed just so.

My advice to likely purchasers is to treat this adapter better than you'd treat the laptop it's hooked up to -- it works, so long as you don't let it get too poorly handled. Quite frankly, this is not what I expected from a company that has made much of its fortunes from the educational sector, where computers and their peripherals take a lot more abuse than I can dish out.

Cable should last longer than 1 month

    Written by LC from Topeka

Hi, I have used this cable a handful of times, (with my 13-inch Macbook) on a Sharp projector, to have the biggest movie screen around. I was with a large group last night and the thing just wouldn't work. Thankfully there was a (gulp) Dell around that had a VGA output so I wasn't completely stranded. Maybe I can get my money back... It worked great, for 3 weeks. Not what I expected from Mac.

Never had any problem.
