poor image on most external monitors

Attempted to use with school multimedia projectors and several models of monitors. Mind you all of the projectors and monitors work great with the vga cable and our various PCs as well as the old model (white) macbook pro. Purchased the dongle for the newer (aluminum) macbook pro and get an absolutely awful picture. All have such a terrible flicker you can see the waves on the screens and especially along the edges. Even students who rarely pay much attention noted the wavy resolution and asked what was wrong with the projector. Tried everything from 60Hz to 95Hz -- same result and get an "out of range" for most rates. One monitor cannot even hold the image for more than 7 minutes without blacking out and resetting. I also had to purchase two adapters before getting the proper size as the packaging did not indicate compatibility issues. Have tried repeatedly to get an honest list from Apple of monitors that will work. No success. Have taken the computer to the store - claim computer is fine -- leaves the adapter since the monitors work with other computers.

    Cord is way too short

The cord works perfectly fine . The only problem is the cord is only 6 inches long. That is not long enough to do anything with. So then you have to go buy an extender cable thats another $20 when you just bought this cable for $20. So thats minus 2 stars for the lengh of the cable.

I've had this for 3 months and it works like a charm (not to be confused with Lucky Charms which are also good). I use it with my MacBook and a MAG LCD, and it works no prob.

Works fine for me. I can't speak for its durability (haven't had it long enough), but as long as you make sure you've picked the right one, it should work fine.

    Mini DVI to VGA Adaptor

    • Written by from San Francisco

I can't get the new Mini DVI to VGA adaptor to sync with my Sharp projector when connected to my MacBook. I see the projector in the Display preferences, but it cannot find my MacBook to project it. I have had success with connecting my 14" iBook to the projector. That connector is different however to the one sold for the MacBook.

    I'm frustrated and disappointed.

The Mini DisplayPort IMHO is a disaster!
Received two new MacBook Pro's a couple of weeks ago. First time one was used we had problems with Dual-link DVI display
Second unit developed a fault with its Mini DisplayPort to VGA connector (no blue displayed - very embarrassing during a client presentation!)
Apple need to deal with this

It really gets on my nerves when people write angry reviews when its thier fault that the item is not working (i.e. trying to use this with a ibook g4 when its not intened to be used with an ibook g4, obviously it will not work!!!!!!!!!!!!) However if you try reading the specs you will find the compatible machines. WOW what an idea acctually checking to see if it work with your machine before you buy it. This product works very well with the machines it was designed to be used with. I imagine apple has released several different mini dvi ports because they are making improvement in engineering and change the port for the better of the product not to be sneaky and have you buy all kinds of equipment. Apple makes tons of money they are not worried about trying to get you to buy a 20.00 product. Read the specs!!!

To use this in Windows, you need to find some drivers for your video card that support monitor output.... Not sure where you should look, but with some digging you should find something I would think

Well, I'm a college student and have loved all the Apple products I have used, but I was a little disappointed in Apple with this product. The product works exactly as intended, however, I was disappointed that this product is so small. The chord is less than 4 inches long, and seriously, what is that going to reach to connect to? Also, the VGA end is female, so you almost have to go drop ANOTHER 20 bucks on a male to male VGA chord to finish hooking things. So, for what Apple is saying they'll give you for 20 plus shipping, your spending roughly 50 bucks on...and that really frustrates me, since i need to pay tuition and things too. So, if you buy this product, expect to drop about 30 more bucks on additional cables than intended.

I have two major problems with this cable. 1) Cord is too short. Should be at least 3-4ft long so in a normal situation it could reach the floor. 2) Unit does not connect with computer, just slides in loosely. When you factor in 1 that it puts the puts the bulk of weight right by computer and 2 the loose connection, that equals cable falling out it you even touch it or move computer a fraction of a inch. Being that I'm using this on a macbook(laptop) in closed lid mode cable falling out equals mac going to sleep. When plugged in works great but feels like you're using an ethernet cable with a broken tab. Sneeze and you're offline.

Hi, i love hooking the laptop up to the tv, n turning Mirrored Image off. Installed XP Home last night, and thought....Hmmmm maybe i can get M.A.M.E. Killer Instinct on TV!! (Since XP runs like a dream) I plug into my Mini-DVI, and NOTHING but sounds n glitches.. Works GREAT in OSX. Not so sure about XP... (this product gets a deducted star since older laptops had the S-Video built in, without paying the $20)

I bought the Mini DVI to VGA adapter so I could show my photos on my projector. The projector doesn't 'see' my MACBOOK and the MACBOOK doesn't see my projector. Rebooted, fired up the projector first then MACBOOK first, every possible combination, but no luck... blew an hour trying to get the thing working. BOOHOO, had a bunch of people over to see my pics of Europe and it was just a big bust. This is a passive device so hard to understand why it wouldnt work.

This is the worst product of all times except for Windows 98. I bought it and it worked for 3 months then stopped working, completely. Absolute junk.
