Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter
Mini DVI to VGA
Written by BB from Los Angeles

As with most people, I always thought to keep my accessories from previous MACs to use on newer models.
That doesn't work this time. I had kept my mini DVI to VGA cord from my iBook G4 to use with my 2007 Macbook. I just found out today that the ports on these two models are different.
So, now I have to cough up more money to buy a cord that will work. And I believe there is no mention of this change as the ports are just referred to as "mini DVI" ports...not "mini DVI 2" like they refer to USB 2.0 or Firewire 400 and/or 800.
I recommend to everyone; before you get excited at the prospect of watching your Family Guy episodes you downloaded from iTunes on your new flatscreen TV, make sure you know if you have the proper cord (if you kept one from a previous Mac).

I got this product for my Macbook. I am gonna dual screen my Macbook to my 32" Samsung Tv. I suggest that everyone make sure what model your Mac is before purchasing any Mini Dvi Adapter. Because they are different Like with this one.

For the most part it is pretty useful for connecting your macbook to your hdtv. But I wish the one end of the cable fit a little more securely in my computer.

Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter
Works with Mac mini (Early 2009) too

This adapter works with the Mac mini (Early 2009), notwithstanding a claim to the contrary by another reviewer. My Pioneer plasma TV has a "PC" wide XGA (analog) port for connecting to a Mac or other personal computer. The Mac mini automatically recognized the available resolutions and color profile. The picture is beautiful. Couldn't ask for more.

Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter
Works just fine

Mini DVI to VGA Adapter works just fine with VGA connections. Apple only dropped connections to analog...ANALOG IS DEAD! AOK with digital. So it will work with any digital VGA monitor/display. If you are connecting to analog, then you will have problems.

BEWARE! Does not work with the 2009 Macbook White!

Buyer beware! I bought this retail, and nowhere on the packaging does it mention this problem. It is somewhat hidden on this pages (linked to with a little *). It does work great when it works (as my friend's laptop can vouch), but if you have a Macbook White, it just doesn't work!

Does not work with Mac Mini

I bought this adapter some time ago for my MacBook (white, 2007) and it worked flawlessly.
Then I bought a new Mac Mini (2009) and it didn't work. After some googling I found that Apple had dropped support for analog signals in the mini-DVI port.
Very bad.39 of 50 people found this useful

Coming from PC laptops - I LIKE IT!

I've had mine in service for about 2.5 years; it hooks my MacBook up to an old Envision 17" inch monitor and works flawlessly.
I once had a problem when running dual monitors (laptop and 17 monitor at very different resolutions) where I unhooked the monitor from the laptop while it was active. Then tried to watch a movie on the laptop and it got confused at which resolution to run. The people at the Apple Store (thanks you guys) and online help instructed me as to the proper procedure to unhook the monitor and the problem was resolved. They also showed me another way to fix it when it is unplugged while the laptop is active.
If, I remember correctly:
1. put the laptop to sleep then unplug the monitor.
2. go to System Preferences > displays > gather monitors also solved the issue.
I like it because the adapter is small and very portable. Specifically, I like the mini DVI on the laptop because it is also small and helps therefore in keeping all the connections on the left side of the MacBook.
I'm not sure what the actual useful differences are between VGA and DVI, but I am looking forward to someday trying DVI to DVI as VGA has been around a long time.8 of 14 people found this useful

What an unbelievably bad and unnecessary product this is
Written by KS from Helsinki

Thank you Apple for first of all NOT making a standard VGA port on the Macbook, but instead making it necessary to spend an astonishing 18 euros ($25!!) on a useless dongle, to be able to connect it to an RGB port. And yes, you still need to, it's actually quite rare for a conference room to have something with an HDMI, let alone a DVI connection!
Second, it's unbelievably finicky, and almost impossible to get it to stick to the mini-DVI port without falling off.
And the worst part - it just broke down. Didn't take even a year.50 of 86 people found this useful
