    Awesome

My wife and I bought the same Macbook so we could use both our machines to watch Neflix movies on line, which finally came out for the Mac.

This works well on both machines. 13 inch black macbooks. Only once, when it came unplugged and I plugged it back in twice did it crash the machine. Haven't tried the S-Video port, but good to know it's there.

    frustrated

I know that ultimately it is my fault for ordering the wrong thing, but it seems like the Apple web store could make it a little easier to figure out what the correct cable is.

If you are not absolutely sure what you are ordering, pick up the phone and talk with someone to sort it out.

I've been working with Macs for over 15 years and I know a little bit. Nonetheless, I still need a little more guidance sorting out the difference between mini-DVI, mini-VGA and "mini-display" - and then cross referencing this with the last couple generations of Mac computers and ports.

If you have a MacBook that is:
    Model Identifier: MacBook5,1 (aluminum body)
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
with a Mini DisplayPort (video out)

and you want to hook it up to your television that has an HDMI input, then you will need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter plus a DVI to HDMI cable (according to the apple store on the phone).

    Now I know.

Does not work with 2009 mini

    Written by TB from Tewksbury

    Apr 4, 2009

I just bought a mini and was told this would work to connect my TV. I also got a mini display port to VGA adapter so I could use a monitor.

The Mini sees the VGA fine, but nothing on the TV.
I'll be trying a VGA to svideo analog converter (not just an adapter).

I'll be taking this back to the store for a refund. I'm hoping this post will lead to Apple getting some info to the stores.

I'm disappointed that Apple has dropped the analog signal from DVI in the 2009 Mini. Lots of people still have S-Video and do not care to buy $500 TV that's smaller then the one they paid $200 for 5 years ago. Failing that, Apple should be selling a solution for connecting the 2009 Mini to a standard definition TV even if it's 3rd party.

Not angry, just trying to get definite information out there.
FWIW, the rating is because the information should be there

Does not work with new (Early 2009) Mac Mini

    Written by ML from Seattle

    Mar 30, 2009

Was hoping to hook up the new Mac Mini up to my older Television. Called in apple support they said it doesn't work. The newer software on the newer "better" graphics card doesn't work with older TVs. Therefore this product does not work with the new Mac Mini and they should say so on the "Overview" like it does for the 2009 MacBood. My "older" TV does not have HDMI input, so I now have a nice looking silver box sitting there until I get a new HDTV with HDMI.

This adapter not useful with '09 macs

    Written by EM from Lisieux

    Mar 24, 2009

This product probably won't allow you to use a legacy tv with '09 macs since Apple has apparently standardized new macs to digital mini-dvi ports.

Legacy tv's need analog. This product works with my 13" '06 macbook analog mini-dvi (dvi-i) but not my new '09 mac mini (mini-d) digital. This is the same case for the '09 macbooks.

Google 'mac mini mini dvi s-video doesn't work' and choose the apple thread to get more details. There's a solution there too. I tried leaving the actual links here, but it's apparently not permitted?!?

I've given this product 2 stars in order to warn buyers. It seems to work for older macs.

Why in the world doesn't this work with the new Macbook?

    Written by SR from Raleigh

    Mar 11, 2009

As a first time Mac purchaser, with a primary purpose of purchasing a Mac being to connect to my TV, this is a poor experience. It would have been nice if the Mac "genius" mentioned that this adapter would not work on a new 09 Macbook when we were purchasing the Mac at the store. We even specifically asked what we would need to connect it to our TV and he handed us this adapter. If anyone has any ideas for workarounds or another adapter that might work with the 09 Macbook, please let me know. Why in the world would this adapter only NOT work with the exact Mac we purchased? Luck of the draw, I guess.

Unfortunately, knowing most picky Mac users, this will not cut it. It does work, but the picture quality is pretty poor on my hdtv. Don't expect to be able to read small text. Looks pretty decent for video though.

Product is good quality and puts out good as long as you keep the resolution set high on your computer when its plug in. The sound is from your ear phone plugin to the red and white inputs jacks in your TV this work good. Anyone who uses this set-up shouldn't have a problem I think it's a good investment, buy it...

    no sound?

    Written by LO from Ridgetown

    Jan 26, 2009

after many trips to 2 different stores (both 35 min drive away to another town), i ended up with this product, and another cable (vga to hdmi) adapter. i wanted to use my flat screen tv to watch home digital movies. after 10 min of trial and error, the video portion worked beautifully, but no sound was coming from the tv. the only sound output was from the laptop internal speakers, which could barely be heard. Should the cable not output sound as well? the vga to hdmi adapter is designed to carry video and sound, so is my problem with the mini-dvi to vga adapter, or a setting in the computer??

    Frustrating!!!

    Flawless

    Written by EM from Dillon

I use this adapter at least 3X a week with my black 2.4 ghz macbook. It works absolutely flawlessly. Just plug it in and it works, just like everything apple. Text on screen is a bit hard to read, but I just use it for showing photos and videos in front row with in conjunction with the apple remote, and it is simply fantastic.

Yes - you can watch full screen streaming video on your TV

    Written by SB from Derwood

    Dec 3, 2008

    and here is how:
    1) Before connecting to the cable to the TV, open up the web browser window and re-size it so it is small (about one quarter of you desktop)
    2) Then connect the video cable to you TV
    3) Change the resolution under your computer's display settings
    4) re-size the browser window to fit the screen, or click on full screen option
It works perfectly with HULU on full screen, so don't listen to other reviewers who don't know how to change the display resolution on thier computers.

    Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter

    Written by HK from Godthisistoughton

    Nov 19, 2008

I had a problem where I was running my White Macbook through the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter, using an RCA cable (the yellow one), and only getting a black and white, low quality picture.

My solution was to go to the display options in my macbook's system preferences, and change the refresh rate from 60hz to 50hz. Voila, colour and good picture! I guess my TV is just really old. At first after solving that problem, however, I had some strange and annoying cascading black dots shimmying across the screen, but after 3 or 4 minutes of playing a film they disappeared.

Pretty cool product, although I reckon it should come with a RCA cable and S-video cable, rather than having to buy thm seperately.

    Works, but...

    Written by SB from Greenville

    Nov 8, 2008

This works just the way it is supposed to but if you're thinking of watching streaming TV shows from major networks on your TV...you can't. ABC's player doesn't fit on a TV screen so you can't get click on the play button. NBC fullscreen fills the whole screen rather than presenting in widescreen on a TV. So, yes, it works the way it is supposed to, no problems there. Just don't think you'll be able to watch streaming shows.

    excellent product for the price

    Written by AP from Kirkwood

    Nov 7, 2008

I bought this because I moved overseas and didn't have cable--just a TV with a lot of snow. Instead of buying the pricey AppleTV I bought this and some red, yellow, and white AV cables to hook up my macbook to the TV to watch streaming shows online or on iTunes; and it has worked like a gem. so easy to use, and for under $20, it was a bargain. The picture isn't "HD" quality or anything like that, but it does the job just fine. I definitely recommend this product for anyone wanting to hook up their mac to a TV or projection monitor.
