Why doesn't this work on a Mini?

    Written by BK from Greeley

    Dec 5, 2009

I was told in the store that this would work with my Mini. It doesn't. It doesn't mention being compatible with a Mini on the packaging, but I didn't read that little print while I was in the store being told it would work. Even reading it now, there is no reason to think that the computer I just bought wouldn't be able to do what some other ones using the same connection could. All the physical connections are there so why would this not work on a Mini? iMac, Powerbook G4, and Macbook are the only compatible models.

    description not specific enough

    Written by NL from wilmington

    Nov 13, 2009

in the description it says not compatable with the 2.0GHZ macbook i figured it would work with my 2.13 ghz macbook WRONG!! the only thing you need to know is that it does not work with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor so regardless of anything else if thats what your computer has this WILL NOT work with your computer. this is annoying because all 2009 macbooks and most others have this GPU. the only alternative ive found besides VGA is mini dvi to dvi than dvi to hdmi which means you have to spend a min. of 40 bucks. so if you have a year old macbook (prior to 2009) go ahead get it. if not your pretty much out of luck if youre trying to connect to RCA or S-video

I bought this for my 2009 mac mini to hook up with my crt tv via s-video. What I didn't know was that this thing does not work with the newest mac mini. It looks like it should work. It does not work.

I am now $30 poorer for no good reason.

NOTE: Does NOT work with new 2009 Mini

    Written by HS from Pflugerville

    Oct 10, 2009

This adapter is incompatible with Macintosh models which use the NVIDIA 9400m graphics chips. That includes any new 2009 MacBooks and Minis. Apple needs to update the information on this page.

It works fine with older MacBooks and Minis based on Intel integrated graphics.

I just bought the Dynex version of this adapter and have spent the last hour dealing with it and the extremely awesome Apple support, and have had no luck at all. I'm just hoping to prevent future headache for anyone who who is looking for this product. Don't settle for for the offbrand!

    Mini Display Port

    Written by AR from Sparks

    Oct 6, 2009

I am a convert from PC to Mac Pro for our Dj Business. I am very dis-appointed that Apple switch from mini DVI display port to a Mini Display Port on the new Mac Pro
but without available adopter to output video to S-video or RCA video. I purchased a $2500 laptop for music video but could not use this expensive laptop without the adapter.

Did not work with Mini Early 2009

Written by CL from San Francisco

But it did work with my roommate's macbook. The guys at the apple store told me it was supposed to work with my machine, but it did not. I would be wary about purchasing this for a 2009 mac mini.

Doesn't work for 2009 Mac Mini

    Written by JA from Issaquah

    Sep 15, 2009

... even though the guys at the Apple Store said it would. Apple needs to be more clear about what machines it does work with; more importantly, what machines it doesn't work with.

    Works well.

    Written by JM from Oakhurst

I have a white macbook I purchased in April of 2008, and this mini-dvi to video
cable works really well. Just be sure to check your manual to see what kind of port
you have. My manual showed that I have a mini-dvi port.
Also the other interesting thing about this device is that when you plug in the
mini-dvi to your computer the screen changes over to a different size ratio for it
to show up on your tv, it's pretty neat, you can even surf the net and watch it on your tv.

    Perfect

    Written by RG from Madison

    Aug 27, 2009

This adapter works perfectly. I use this along with a Karaoke application for playing shows. I simply plug this in and it displays my lyrics perfectly on a 42" LCD connected by a regular component video cable! I am very pleased with this product. To those who say it isn't compatible... you need to do some more research before you buy. The new unibody macbooks do not have a mini-dvi port. They use the new mini-display port. Just make sure you have the right video output, and you will be happy with this product.

    Not compatible

    Written by AP from Chicago

This cable does not work with the macs from the fall of 2008 either (they say not compatible with white Jan 2009). I bought it because of all the great reviews, but when I got it, the DVI plug does not fit my fall 2008 macbook (the aluminum one). FYI.

Apple: Please be more specific in your descriptions!

    Exactly what I wanted!

Written by SD from LOS ANGELES

With this adapter and video cables I was able to cancel my cable TV service. Now anything I can pull up on the computer can be viewed on my TV. Awesome!
The only thing I would change is if they could have designed it so it doesn't unplug so easily when used with a laptop.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter doesn't work with Mini Mac

    Written by YL from Scarborough

    Jul 3, 2009

I bought this cable from Best Buy, but I find it doesn't work with my Mini Mac. At here, I also read someone left the same message as mine.

If it's true, apple should be noticed it, and correct its advisory information on this product webpage, or give us a software update on Mini Mac displaying driver.

Previously I love apple product, and this is my first time to encounter this problem.

Does exactly what it was intended to do

    Written by EM from Chicago

    May 30, 2009

Just like a few others here, I bought this cable so my husband and I could watch streaming Netflix on our LCD TV. So far, it's been working perfectly. We connected it between our MacBooks with an S-video cable and now we're happily streaming away. The video is a little fuzzy but nothing disruptive, and I imagine that considering the discrepancy between the resolution on the MacBook and our TV, this is fairly unavoidable. A great solution, no complaints!

Not for Mac Mini (early 2009)

Written by KC from Ann Arbor

    May 10, 2009

I bought a Mac Mini (May 2009) and this Mini-DVI to Video adapter with plans to use it to send an S-video signal to an analog TV. Though the sales staff at the Apple store said it should work, it does not. The graphics card apparently should support it, and it may be addressed with a future driver update, but as of now this does not work. I have used a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and monitor to verify that the port is working, and also verified that the S-video cable and TV input work. There are third party VGA to S-video/RCA adapters available so I plan to use one of those for my purposes. This is probably a 5-star product when used with the right Mac; however, Apple should have made it clear that having a mini-DVI port on your Mac is necessary but not sufficient for this to work - hence the 3 stars.
