  • Apple DVI to Video Adapter

One year and great so far..

I use this on a MacBook Pro so I can watch movies on the the big screen. Combining that connection with a Belkin Mini Jack Y Cable and I have a cheap, effective replacement of an Apple TV.

I leave this adapter in my laptop backpack and so far it's pretty durable. Anyhow, like others said.

S-Video OK composite not so much

    Written by CE from WASHINGTON

    May 23, 2008

I plugged this into my ATI 2600 XT, hooked the composite into my (mid 90's) NTSC television and got a blank, black screen. I tried several composite cables but no luck. Fortunately I just happened to have a S-Video to composite adapter cable lying around, and when I plugged that one in I was in business.

I don't see any options to choose which output is being used, and my assumption is that they're both supposed to be active. In my case, the composite output simply does not work with my TV.

Works with any DVI port, not just mac.

Works with ANY COMPUTER (even WINDOWS), as long as it has a DVI port (rectangle) not a VGA port (trapezoid). Works perfectly fine, but edges seem warped a bit.

Little explanation needed for people using this.

    Written by MB from Brighton

This may be rubbish but may explain peoples issues.

Apple ships computers with a DVI-I interface. This means it can output analogue or a digital signal hence why it works with adapters. Some PC's come with this interface but some come with DVI-D which only outputs a digital signal hence why adapter will not work.....also not sure if pc's video drivers are written to be aware of the DVI-I interface it is probable it only sees it as a DVI-D.

Also all those people moaning about the quality tough luck. Analogue video though composite/s-video does not support above 1024 x 768 very well it was not designed for these sort of resolutions. When you are used to RGB/VGA signals the quality is pretty good,(composite is poor, svideo is better, then RGB analogue then RGB/Digital is the quality level) If you have a HDTV then get a DVI to HDMI cable then you get a very crisp high resolution RGB signal.

Hope this helps to explain this.

    works just as advertised

I bought this to connect my mini to my TV to watch downloaded movies on a bigger screen. As others have stated, the resolution is not very good, but it works great for watching movies. Also, it DOES WORK IN XP when using a macmini. I don't even have a monitor for the mini, just use the TV (which really isn't an ideal situation, especially when surfing the net in XP... text is very hard to read), and can tell you that XP does indeed show up on the TV.

    It works!

It works great. Now I can watch iphoto slideshows on my tv. I got a MacBook pro which came with a remote control that controls frontrow which lets me select video, audio, and photos via the remote. Now I can play cool screensavers (Like Soundstream) on my tv. The resolution is lower on a tv than on the computer's screen, but it's good enough for looking at photos or selecting music.

Revolutionize your digital life-- Tips for using with OS X

    Written by DS from McAllen

    Oct 20, 2006

I have a G4 Mac Mini, Apple Bluetooth keyboard, & a Toshiba 32 inch SDTV flat tube. I don't use a mouse, instead I've enabled Mouse Keys on system preferences/universal access panel and use my numeric keypad to move the pointer instead. I also take advantage of the Zoom features which you activate using Cmd-opt-8 {then zoom in with cmd-opt-=, zoom out with cmd/opt/- (minus)}. The resolution is EXCELLENT. I also recommend that if you have another computer you install OSXVNC so you can take control of your display from another computer using a free VNC client should you change your display settings and muck it up to where you can't see anything, like when you accidentally choose a PAL resolution instead of an NTSC. Also, take the time to learn keyboard short cuts. This is my response to the complaints I've read on other posts. If you're willing to do all this, this thing ROCKS and is a lot of bang for the buck.

    Good, but?

    Written by SK from Woburn

This works well with my Macbook Pro 15", but although I guess it says it's a mac only product, the guys at the Apple Store said it should work with a PC with DVI out. I tried it with my PC, and it doesn't work, anybody have any ideas?

Anyways, this works well with the Macbook, but the resolution quality is not that great.

After messing with settings for a bit I got the picture to be clear on my Philips tube. You can read text fine. The problem I have is using my Macbook Pro to try and play World of Warcraft. It shows up fine in windowed mode, but switching to fullscreen, it focuses on the lower left 1/2 area of game. I'm still working on this probelm, the only problem.

    Use in the classroom

    Written by KK from Lyndhurst

I use this and my Macbook Pro and keypoint to highlight parts of my lectures in class and to introduce other material, even what the homework is that day. I connect by book to the TV in the room and use keypoint with a remote. My kids are amazed. It's much easier to get and keep their attention than it is with just writing things on the chalkboard...which I still do as well at times.

    one neat feature

Written by EG from San Jose

    May 17, 2006

it doesn't seem like that useful of a feature... but the video adapter spits out video on the RCA and S-Vid ports at the same time (i've seen devices that don't). this means that you can drive two displays from it, so when doing a video show with my G5 i can spit the RCA over a long cable to a projector and use the S-Vid for my preview out.

over all it's simple enough to use. i've never had a problem with hot-swapping the device (it's passive, AFAIK) but i take a star off for sometimes unpredictable software behavior (resolutions, moving windows around on my three monitors). i wish Apple's video out drivers were more robust, as they only control overscan and a "Best for Video" contrast setting and not positioning or size. i installed the ATi drivers and can use that to adjust it.

Great picture quality (for a PC to TV converter, that is)

Written by VT from North Andover

I bought this thing for $19 at an Apple Retail store near me. Overall picture quality is very good from my Mac mini. DON'T expect quality as good as a PC monitor because PC and TV are worlds apart.

This looks JUST as good as the s-video out on the power books. Small text is blurry. Movies and Games look absolutely fine!

Great tv-out, but doesn't remember the resolution!

    Written by SP from Helsinki

    Oct 8, 2005

I've used this on a Mac Mini, and despite the lack of RGB SCART output (for European TV sets) I have to say it's the best ever on a computer. Big bonus for the anamorphic resolution 1024x576. No Windows PC does this, even if the display hardware is exactly the same.

There's just one BIG problem -- when you reboot the Mac, the TV resets to a 800x600 resolution. That's NOT very practical.
