Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
It Worked!
Written by JG from Oakland
May 14, 2009
I'm using the adapter with a 17" studio display. The picture quality is acceptable (perhaps a little color bleeding, or maybe I'm just not used to 10.5 yet).
Pros: It made an otherwise obsolete monitor usable. Also, it's nice having the extra reach that the adapter offers, since my Mac Pro sits far to the side of my desk in a noiseless enclosure.
Cons: Loss of functionality with the power button on the display. The adapter doesn't appear to be USB2 compatible. If you connect a USB2 flash drive to the port on your keyboard, it will run at half speed. Or perhaps it's Apple displays with ADC that are not USB2 compatible.
Also, the adapter gets *hot*. Bad news if your Mac resides in a place where heat is an issue.21 of 23 people found this useful

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Expensive, but it works.
Written by CL from Wichita

I just bought one of these to use my 17" Apple Studio Display with my MacBook Pro. Yes its huge (almost as big as a Mac Mini) and it totally defeats the purpose of ADC (reduce cable clutter) but it does function just as promised. Only 3 stars because there are plenty of cons (increased cable clutter, pretty expensive, bulky...) but hey, it does what you need it to do.

DON'T USE THE DISPLAY'S USB PORT!
Written by MG from Henderson
Feb 15, 2008
The adapter works OK with my 20" Cinema Display and my new MacPro. However, the displays' USB port was shaky under 10.5.1 but fails under 10.5.2. I had the keyboard and mouse attached and the mouse would freeze intermittently. I suggest that you do not use the displays' USB port, period.

Regards to the PRICE
Written by MH from Altamonte Springs
Dec 15, 2007
There are many comments complaining about the price. Consider this: You are really buying two adapters AND a power supply. The video adapter portion should be about $19 based on Apples other offerings. The USB cord is about $5 or $25 if you really think it needs a power boost like a USB port would. And finally a power supply for the display. These are kind of expensive based on Apples other power supplies, figure $50. So the total for the adapters comes to $74 to $94. In this context the price is not so bad. Yes annoying, but not bad.

Works, but....
Written by RG from new york

The Positive: I'm using this with a 12" Powerbook, and an older 17" clear/white display. Worked the moment I hooked it up. Dialed in the preferences and it worked perfect.
The Negative: There must be millions of people like me who've paid what-$700 hundreds of dollars for this now "obsolete" Apple display, but still can't get rid of it and find it useful. Many people have said through their apparent anger, and I agree -why the high price?
I thought long and hard about getting rid of this ugly designed 17" display simply because the cable costs more than what the display is worth. For those wondering about how big it is, it's 5x5x1.5. It's a massive, heavy, always very warm, white thing on the floor-indeed it must use a lot of energy just to power the screen. One other plus perhaps, it's a foot warmer if it's cold...49 of 82 people found this useful

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Works with Mac Mini.
Written by SH from Redondo Beach
Apr 19, 2007
I have just purchased a new Mac Mini for my wife's birthday present. After dinner I gave it to her and we immediately went on to try it with her old Apple made display, mouse, and the keyboard. The display connector and the Mac mini connector did not fit, though they looked almost identical. It all worked before with her CUBE. We were disappointed for not being able to try out the new computer. This is what it said online for Mac mini at the Apple store when I was making a buying decision:
"Mac mini makes it easy to upgrade from an older system or set it up side-by-side with another computer. Just BYODKM — bring your own display, keyboard, and mouse."
The next morning we call the Apple customer service and they know exactly what we need. A $99 DVI to ADC display adapter. So much for BYODKM. $99 is in my opinion a lot for a piece that shouldn't be needed in the first place or should at best cost $19 and I feel that Apple mislead me with their marketing BYODKM slogan. Sorry guys, but you may have just lost me.82 of 128 people found this useful

works well but DON'T MIRROR DISPLAYS
Written by AZ from San Francisco
Feb 16, 2007
I coughed up $100 to plug my MacBook Pro into my old cinema display.
I noticed that if you go into system prefs/displays/arrangement, and then check the Mirror Displays button, the picture looks bad, blown out and blurry.
It looks fine if you uncheck that option.
Does seem kind of ridiculous that the adapter is half the size of a Cube44 of 67 people found this useful

Monstrously big. USB hub feature is unreliable
Written by SJ from Catonsville
Nov 2, 2006
The DVI to ADC conversion itself works well, but the brick is far bigger than it appears in pictures. It's really massive. Also, over time I found the USB hub feature of my 20" Cinema Display to be unreliable and that seems to be due to the adapter. Periodically the USB ports on the back of my display stop working and I found that I have to (crawl under my desk and) pull the power from the DVI-to-ADC adapter and plug it back in in order to get them working again. Eventually I just bought a USB hub and stopped using that feature of the adapter and display.

This thing is freakin huge
Written by BK from Philadelphia

I'm not complaining about the fact that I need this adaptor or even the fact that I had to spend $100 for it. I'm just really disapointed with how big they had to make this thing. The brick is honestly almost the size of a Mac Mini. On top of that there are four wires coming out of it. Maybe I should be greatful that I got this 20" Cinema Display for $250 used and then only paid $100 more for the adaptor, but I would have rather paid $150 or even $200 for a new video card that would support ADC with my late model G5.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
a dirty trick!
Written by JG from brooklyn
Sep 24, 2006
not anticipating any compatibility issues, i didn't realize i'd need a different adaptor than the one included with the mac mini for my old monitor. shame on you, apple, for not offering an option to choose the adaptor when placing the order! and now i have to sink an additional $100 into this? i'm going to suck it up because i really have no other choice - spent $700 on the monitor 5 years ago, i'm not letting it go to waste. there are enough monitors incompatible with the standard adaptor that it really ought to be an option similar to upgrading memory, storage space, etc. now i know why people get frustrated with apple. too bad PCs are so horrible i have to take apple's abuse! grrr!

Well... it works... but...
Written by ST from San Antonio

The adapter does work. Seems unfair that it costs $100 to use my display on a STOCK apple video card because there is one ADC and one DVI port. Blah. I'd much rather pay $30 for this. $100 is like a whole new video card!

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Works Fine, But Clunky and Expensive
Written by JH from Olivette
Apr 23, 2006
Color me unimpressed that Apple made me buy this clunky thing in order to use my Apple Studio Display with a new G5. The good news is my beautiful flatscreen is as sharp and clean as ever (nothing like suffering with an old VGA monitor to help me appreciate the Studio Display). The bad news is there's this huge white brick to deal with, and the monitor's on-off button no longer works. Plus the connector uses up one of the G5's USB ports. Meh. And it's $100! Double meh.

Invalid Complaints
Written by BA

Perhaps a little research into such an investment (e.g. a PowerMac) would help to omit some of the one star reviews. I, personally, am happy to see Apple progress to a more universal and advanced output (DVI). This adapter makes it possible for previous monitor owners to save the price of a whole new monitor. However, the price of the adapter is hefty, and the size could be more of an issue if looks took presidence over function.
