Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Apple messed this one up in more ways than one
Written by BP from Fort Collins
Oct 6, 2009
I have owned Macs and been a Mac fanatic since the original 128k Mac came out and I have to say that this was the worst thing Apple has ever done. (The "hockey puck" mouse was an ergonomic mess but at least it worked.) First, when you upgrade to their new powerbooks they charge you $100 to get an adapter to use your Apple 30" display. Second, you have to wait months to actually get the adapter. Third when you finally get the adapter it produces noise on the beautiful 30" display to the point that at times (when there was dark background) it was almost unusable. Fourth, when you find out through these posts that everyone is having the same problem Apple does nothing to admit to the problem or contact people that bought these that there is a problem.
Finally with no official word from Apple and all the sometimes contradictory information on these posts (and after waiting for Snow Leopard to come out since some information inferred that it was fixed in software but alas is wasn't) it was finally revealed that there was a firmware upgrade in the new adapters that fixes the problem. So after a trip to an apple store 2 hours away, and some push back about exchanging my old adapter for a new one (since it has been a year since I ordered it), the new adapter does work much better. however I have to say that there are still occasional static streaks visible on black backgrounds.
So after purchasing nearly a hundred Macs over the last 20+ years Apple has really disappointed me on this one.31 of 38 people found this useful

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
does not work with Mac Pro
Written by SA from IOWA CITY
Jul 2, 2009
I was told my Apple Cinema HD 23 inch display would work with my new Mac Pro. I was told wrong. It only works WITH this DVI to ADC adapter AND the USB ports don't work, the on/off switch does not work, the Monitor Preferences button does not work, and brightness control does not work. In other words, the DVI to ADC computer does not work well at all on the Macintosh Pro.

I've never been more disappointed with an Apple product
Written by WF from San Francisco

I upgraded from the previous generation macbook pro to the unibody macbook pro, and needed this adapter to drive my 30" display. This device alone makes me regret the upgrade. The display will randomly go completely fuzzy and become unusable until I disconnect/reconnect the adapter. This happens roughly 6 times per work day. About another 20 times a day it will flicker and become fuzzy for less than a second.
There's also something else about the display now that I can't quite put my finger on. My eyes become much more tired since this 'upgrade', even though my display and resolution have not changed.12 of 26 people found this useful

Waste of time and money

Waste of time and money
I bought the old version of the apple cinema screen 20" with ADC adapter. The manual says that i can connect my imac (dual) using the mini-dvi port (with a mini dvi to dvi adapter + and a DVI to ADC adapter (£68 in apple store) so a could connect my lovely 20" apple acrylic display. Its was supposed to work and after lots of research and several visits to genius bar nobody could give me a reasonable explanation why was not working. The adaptors and screen tested individually works fine... so for me was a wast of time and money!!!12 of 26 people found this useful

I was excited to get the fam's old 23" cinema display.. then I realized I needed this thing.. not happy to fork over the hundred bucks, let me tell you..
I finally got it and found out that I couldn't plug it into the Playstation 3 because it's not "HCSP compatible" or some such annoying thing. Shall I drop $300 in addition to the $100 I paid for this? My wallet disagrees.. I mean, c'mon, it's an older monitor and I'm a college student!
**MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THAT THE APPLE CINEMA DISPLAY NEEDS A VIDEO CARD (COMPUTER) TO WORK!! Check a Mac forum if you're skeptical.
So I guess I don't have much of a review for the actual product, but I'm giving it one star because of all the crapola associated with the Cinema Displays. hahah but it's true it's big.44 of 87 people found this useful

TOO BIG and TOO EXPENSIVE x2!
Written by TH from Colorado Springs
Sep 3, 2008
I agree with other reviews...WAY TOO BULKY and TOO EXPENSIVE! This thing is huge!
Of course it works as billed. It adapts my 23" Apple Cinema Display to work with my new MacPro...but I shouldn't have to! Adding insult to injury, I was using TWO Apple Cinema Displays...now I would have to buy TWO of these monstrous adapters (at the tune of $200) if I want to continue with the dual screen. In addition to the size and the expense, it also uses up a USB port!! So there goes two USB ports just for my monitors!
Come on, seriously?!?!31 of 42 people found this useful

Garbage
Written by RW from Santa Monica

i bought this today to connect my old 23 cinema display to my powerbook g4. should be straightforward, right? nope. green flickering pixels everywhere. they are clustered in the dark areas of my wallpaper image and they move as the dark areas move. screen has worked fine for years on a quicksilver g4. so buyers beware. this thing has been nothing but a headache.

I'm sure the adapter works fine...yawn.

Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter
Written by NS from New York

I agree with the majority of responses here-- this is ridiculous. Despite using both PC's and Macs for years, I always considered myself a Mac person, and recently when my "vintage" G4 broke down I coughed up thousands of dollars for a Macbook Pro. Now I have to cough up another $100 just to connect it to my slightly older display? Not good, Apple.
A few years ago some PC people put together a video spoofing the Mac commercials of the time. One of the lines went to the tune of-- "Upgrading a Mac is easy; when I need to upgrade, I just pick it up, put in the trash, and buy a new one..." At the time I thought it was funny but didn't see any truth to it...however, it's moves like this ($100 for an ADAPTER???? Gimme a break!!!) that make me ponder if there's some truth to that sentiment after all.109 of 157 people found this useful

what happened to plug and play?
Written by MM from SAINT HELENA ISLAND

Mac to Mac not compatible, say what! I am begginning to think that the cutting edge at Apple is now for the purpose of extracting the most dollars from loyal customers. I recently purchased a new mini and carelessly thought that it would work with my 23" HD Cinema display. But no it doesn't. Don't you think that someone would tell you, not at the Apple Store. Now after numerous calls to the customer care department and hours spent on hold they finally tell me about a new DVI to ADC adapter and guess what its only another $100.00 plus shipping. So I place the order and guess what they forgot to include a power cord. Well I am still on hold waiting for a product specialist to enlighten me as to the availability of a power cord.

Beware, Mac Sleep Function Does Not Work
Written by KR from Kodak
Apr 7, 2007
I was also annoyed when I bought the top of the line studio display monitor and the top of the line G5 and then found I had to spend $100 to connect the two! After connecting I found the computer would no longer wake from sleep, then after a few minutes the fan in the G5 speeds up so loud I think it is going to explode. It does this every time I put the computer to sleep using this adaptor. Plug a different monitor up to it without this brick and the G5 works fine. After a year and a half of having to shut the computer down every day instead of sleep the power supply in my G5 just burned out. Thanks Apple.

Mac addict disappointed for the first time
Written by PA from Ann Arbor
Jan 24, 2007
Why not keep ADC and create DVI to begin with? The Studio Displays are not that old yet my school would need to buy this adapter. I said no. Get me a cheap PC monitor. But it's not for the money. Ths school where I work can afford it, and so can I. It's the principle. To appease this customer here Apple needs to come up with a really good explanation. The adapter is ugly, bulky, cumbersome and of limited-time usefulness. The Studio Display I have in my office functions well with the Power Mac and I do not really need to connect it to my Powerbook. Besides, I would have needed a second adapter for the mini-DVI port on my Powerbook. Sorry to say, but this is very disappointing. Worthy of the PC world. Should I switch to a PC?

Where's the Power On function?
Written by RW from White Rock
Nov 22, 2006
I read a number of the reviews before posting, but my Power On function on my 20" Cinema Display no longer works with this adapter. The glowing "button" on the right lower corner of the screen just glows whenever the computer is on, and will not turn my MacPro on the way it did my G4.
Is this common? Apple surely didn't come up with an adapter unit this big and relatively expensive, and not include all the functions, did they?58 of 80 people found this useful

Bad Apple!
Written by MB from Pembroke
Sep 30, 2006
I am not sure the adapter is sturdy enough (had one for laptop that has to be replaced). For those of us with large partner desks, where wiring must be run through portholes in the desk bottom, Apple's cords are too short without any way to extend them. MAINLY, Apple deserves one-star ratings in consumer care and sensitivity. This adapter, critial to some users - just like latest model PowerMacs, MacBooks, etc. - is an Apple product. When customers are buying the newer models, they should be advised that adaptive equipment may be required. That's called CARING - a better thing than GREED. What a BIG, UNPLEASANT SURPRISE when cranking up a shiny new fully-loaded Quad to find out you have no workable monitor, especially when your PowerBook is being boxed to go in the Apple Repair Shop!

I can't believe it!
Written by DB from Rodeo

Do I see upset mac users? Hooooly moooly. I must say it was a good idea to be able to have one cable to power the monitor as well as having usb ports on the monitor. Apple can't create all the standards though. I am a pc user waiting for Apple to make there OS available for both pc and mac. Why not apple makes pcs. Stop the hate! I'm not gonna spend 3000 bucks on a 1500 dollar computer and neither should you. We just love OSX! But this whole converter thing I just think it's overpriced it should be around 29.99 end of story.

Mel's Rule
Written by DM from Avon

I was forced to buy this adapter four years ago to hook up a 15" flat-panel to my older G4... and now after only four years of service the thing has kicked the bucket, the monitor no longer works and neither do the mouse or keyboard connected via the monitor... looks like it's time to shell out yet another $99...

Shameless Pricing For Apple's Own Design Flaw
Written by WW from Columbia

For Apple to charge ANYTHING for this adapter is shameless. It should be included free with all new Macs to allow connection to Apple's not-so-old displays.
