    Really expensive surprise.

Written by GS from New York

    Mar 15, 2006

I was also very surprised to find out that I had to buy this expensive, large, ugly adapater. Did I "research" on my own? Sure but I also relied heavily on the folks at the SoHo store here in New York and the Apple call center's product info people. Both sources assured me that my display would work with a Mini and the topic of DVI vs. ADC was never mentioned to me. Technically, my display does work with it but I think Apple must make an effort to downplay the problems of display compatibility and additional cost ($100!). Why else would BOTH sources not inform me that there was more to the story of compatibility? Apple does both the customer and their company a disservice on this, especially given the Mini price point compared to the adapter cost. After this, I'm just not sure who or what the Mini was designed for. With all the cables, adapters, power supplies, etc. this thing takes up more room than my old PowerMac G4 and is a total eyesore. Think carefully before you buy a Mini. Ask others who own one and DO NOT rely on Apple to advise you accurately of all you may need to purchase with the Mini to make it functional.

Works very well with the new Core Mini

    Written by MB from Minneapolis

I have both a 17" and 23" LCD display that I can now use (one at a time of course) with my new mini. The video quality is great and the Mac can tell the size of each display when connected. The product does exactly what it should.

Don't have to buy another video card

    Written by CL from Albuquerque

With this adapter, I don't have to buy another video card just to use my old 22" Cinema Display. And I can still run another DVI monitor off of the other port on my G5's dual port DVI video card.

    Works fine

We use these at work with both G5 Macs, G4 Powerbooks and non-Macs like Dell desktops and over the past couple of years we haven't had any trouble at all with probably 40 or 50 users.

    Shameful

Written by TB from Oak Park

    Mar 7, 2006

Apple should really be ashamed. When I upgrade my computer I don't expect to have to pay an extra $100 to use a monitor that I spent thousands of dollars on just a few years ago. I understand the charge for people who don't use Apple computers, but this adapter should come FREE or highly discounted with the purchase of a new mac. Shame on Apple.

Beware - it might fry your video card!

    Written by SP from Vancouver

I was having problems with my laptop... no one could figure out why I was getting these annoying dotted lines periodically on my displays (PB + Cinema Display). I took my PB in to learn that my logic board needed replacing ($1000 + labor + taxes). Being in the middle a of crushing deadline, I get a Mac mini... got home, unpack... and the bloody same thing starts again. I got an electrician, he removed the adapter, borrowed the LCD from a neighbor... and voilà - the mini works again. Unfortunately too bad for my PB's logic board... this stupid adapter fried it.

    crooked

    Written by JD from Lakeland

Thankfully, I read the other reviews of this product and happened to discover that the adapter DOES NOT WORK with the CRT ADC Studio Display!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the twits at Apple sent my wife a mini VGA to VGA adapter for 20 dollars with of course was not correct and now I find that after being a macaddict since 1984, Apple is leaving me out in the cold.....in other words, I need to buy a new monitor and let the old one gather dust. I could have just bought a used Cube instead of the mini....moral: read reviews and be glad you are an apple person anyway, Wintel does this always!

just bought 2.3 dual core..... MY CINEMA DISPLAY 22" ADC is not compatible..... buy DVI to ACD adapter..... adapter only works for 15 " 17" ...not 22". huh?

return adapter to to PC Mall .. no returns or exchanges on open packages from Apple.. NICE.

luckily I have a 15" and I can get to work

    thanks apple

I look forward to spending another $2500 on the 30" display. JUST TO KEEP IT CONSISTENT MAKE SURE THAT THE DVI WON'T WORK WITH THE INTEL MACHINES.

maybe I can trade my 22" for a pack of gum.

Just upgraded to a new ATI Radeon 9600 vidoe card and found out my Cinema Display doesn't conect to the DVI connector and after shelling out $200 I need to put out another $100 bones for this junk. Shame on you Apple for leaving your customers out in the cold.

Two words: THANKFUL that there actually exists such a device in order that my $1000 Cinema Display won't just sit there collecting dust like it has been for the past year, and BROKE because the price for this little gadget for a loyal Mac user reaches too far down into the pocketbook for simply an adapter.

It's nice to see apple has embraced the 21st century, and isn't looking back on the low quality of VGA. although ADC was a short lived venture, it's still an improvement.

    Invalid Complaints

    Written by BA

    Jan 21, 2006

Perhaps a little research into such an investment (e.g. a PowerMac) would help to omit some of the one star reviews. I, personally, am happy to see Apple progress to a more universal and advanced output (DVI). This adapter makes it possible for previous monitor owners to save the price of a whole new monitor. However, the price of the adapter is hefty, and the size could be more of an issue if looks took presidence over function.

Here we spend thousands on a new Apple Cinema 23" monitor and then another 6 thousand on a new G5 Quad and the two won't hook up!! What's up with that apple? Now I have to wait, losing time and money for this "octapus" to arrive, and who knows when that will be, when Apple should have made note of that in the description of the Power Mac G5 Quads. Very, very, very unsatisfied over this. Sorry, I can't rate it, I HAVE TO WAIT NOW UNTIL IT ARRIVES. . . . DOING NOTHING!!

    I love apple BUT....

    Jan 9, 2006

this is ridiculous. they say any apple display will work with my mac mini. so, i go and buy a nice, little 15" Studio display and after waiting a good week to get it... i now have to shell out $99 for the adapter that is needed to use the display with my mac mini. its a huge pile of ____. I'm a struggling student as it is and now i have to pay $99 dollars for something to work that you said would work in the first place... that might be some fine print that you couldve added.

    Not all the facts...

    Written by DH from Riverside

    Jan 5, 2006

The description fails to mention that this product only works with the flat LCD displays, not their flat CRT displays (which were released at the same time). apparently the Genius' at the mac store and even the apple care techs weren't aware of this, and I had to dig through tons of support docs to realize this myself. THE LEAST YOU COULD DO IS MENTION THIS IN THE DESCRIPTION!!! Plus if you buy one of these hulking $100 adapters after a "Genius" says you need one, they won't let you return it unless you bother making phone calls to corporate.

    DVI Connector

Written by MO from Aliso Viejo

    Dec 27, 2005

Like several other Mac users, I am very disappointed to learn that my 20" Cinema display is not compatible with their newer computers and requires the use of a $100 adapter. I recently purchased a Mac Mini only to find that Apple has changed the monitor connection from a ADC to a DVI interface. Apple should provide this adapter free of charge since I am connecting an Apple computer with an Apple monitor that is less than a few years old. I am considering taking the Mac Mini back to the Apple store. It had not even crossed my mind that the Cinema display wouldn't be compatible with the Mini. And to learn that the adapter costs $100 is adding insult to injury.

    DVI to ADC

    Written by RD

    Dec 14, 2005

    Just unpacked my new G5.

Tried to plug in my 20 inch Cinema Display (previous model) and guess what? Did not fit! I called a local apple dealer. They told me to buy a new screen as an adapter does not work....

The apple helpdesk told me to purchase an adapter. It should work. What bothers me most is not the fact that I do need to buy an adapter. It is the stupidity of Local Apple dealers what irritates me the most. (Have to deal with them professionally)

My advice to everybody is buy direct from Apple unless you have a proven reliable dealer in your area. Steve J. should really do something about the weakest link in marketing a wonderful product in Canada...

I can't believe apple is forcing me to spen even more money on this adapter. what a cold shot it was to climb back there to plug in my first generation cinema display only to find it doesn't connect, and THEN to discover it costs 100 bucks. i'm beside myself right now. i find this completely insulting.

    Design and USB port problems.

    Written by CS from BROOKLYN

    Dec 6, 2005

I agree that this is huge and cumbersome with lots of loose cables, this goes against everything apple aims for in design. I had to buy this after I realized that our new Quad G5 power mac does not connect to our older 23 inch cinema display. Why they took away the one ADC connector off the new power macs when there are tens of thousands of adc displays is beyond me. Beyond these minor annoyances, when I booted up the new Power Mac with the adaptor and old display the USB ports on the display no longer work. Sigh. Now I will call Apple to see if this can be fixed. I recommend you ask someone accountable if you could have this same problem at the Apple Store before you purchase

Massive box adds extra expense and clutter...

Written by WL from Los Angeles

If you order a new G5 and expect it to work with your Apple Display Connection equipped Cinema Display, think again. Imagine opening your Apple Computer to find that it isn't compatible with your Apple Monitor, and there is no easy fix except to order this big, clunky expensive adapter. I can understand if this is a fix to make a PC product work on a Mac, but this is Mac to Mac. There is nothing wrong with my 20" Cinema, why would I want to replace it with the current model? I am really upset by this.
