  • Apple DVI to ADC Adapter

    Well... it works... but...

Written by ST from San Antonio

The adapter does work. Seems unfair that it costs $100 to use my display on a STOCK apple video card because there is one ADC and one DVI port. Blah. I'd much rather pay $30 for this. $100 is like a whole new video card!

Most useful -saved a lot of money

Switched from a G4 desktop (noisy) machine to a cheep and quiet MacMini. With this display adaptor I can still use my 22" Cinema display. Otherwise I had to buy another new monitor. The $99.00 price may seem high, but it replaces also the power supply that was build in the older G4's. The Mini, given their price setting, do not provide this because the newer DVI displays have again their own power supply.
Good stuff. Works flawlessly somewhere onder my desk.

    Clunky but does the job.

    Written by CB from Montrose

I purchased this adapter to connect my 23" HD Cinema screen (ADC) to my new Quad Core G5 (both of which I ordered from apple.com). I panicked at first because the adapter did not work, but I was able to exchange it for a new one at the Apple Store. All is good now - display and G5 are up and running. The only negative things I can say about this adapter: it's gigantic (5"x5" box, ~1.5" high) - just very clunky in general, feels quite warm to the touch and it hogs a USB port. On a positive note, I'm glad I only had to spend $100 rather than drop $1300 on a new display. I'd also like to note that the 2 USB ports on the back of my display are fully functional (some of the previous reviews stated that their ports were no longer working). Also, the button on the front left launches the display settings panel in system prefs. So overall - a great purchase!

    Nice piece of hardware.

This adapter is about 2/3 the price of other adapters and looks at least 100x better. Plus, it's Apple official issue. If you have one of the eight-year-old Apple displays with an ADC connector and need to hook it up to recent-model video card with DVI output, this is the gadget you're looking for.

Spent the money - can't get the monitor to start up without being connected to a Mac... Probably just user error - but frustrating.

Do I see upset mac users? Hooooly moooly. I must say it was a good idea to be able to have one cable to power the monitor as well as having usb ports on the monitor. Apple can't create all the standards though. I am a pc user waiting for Apple to make there OS available for both pc and mac. Why not apple makes pcs. Stop the hate! I'm not gonna spend 3000 bucks on a 1500 dollar computer and neither should you. We just love OSX! But this whole converter thing I just think it's overpriced it should be around 29.99 end of story.

    Mel's Rule

    Written by DM from Avon

    May 22, 2006

Apple has, with this product, joined the ranks of those organizations that follow Mel's rule, which, translated to this situation, reads: "Apple always gives you what you want, but they make you hate them for it."

    Oh Please!

    Written by EH from Phoenix

Ok, so you have to buy an adaptor for your old monitor and your new computer. Big deal. You bought the old Apple Display to go w/ your Old computer. Wouldn't it make sense that when newer technology is developed, apple uses it? Should apple keep the old ADC, which didn't become standard across the board, on their new products just so when YOU choose to upgrade your computer you don’t have to buy an adaptor? Why should apple go stagnate with their technology just to save the customers who bought $2000+ monitors 2-3 years ago $100. These adaptors used to cost $300 before apple came out with theirs.
Isn't it apparent that when the new Intel PowerMac comes out, a new Cinema Display will too? Don't complain. Besides, who spends $2000+ on a monitor and then buys the cheapest computer (mini). You might as well put some High-end chrome spinners on the rims of your 1992 ford escort.

I was forced to buy this adapter four years ago to hook up a 15" flat-panel to my older G4... and now after only four years of service the thing has kicked the bucket, the monitor no longer works and neither do the mouse or keyboard connected via the monitor... looks like it's time to shell out yet another $99...

Shameless Pricing For Apple's Own Design Flaw

    Written by WW from Columbia

For Apple to charge ANYTHING for this adapter is shameless. It should be included free with all new Macs to allow connection to Apple's not-so-old displays.

    A bit short sighted...

    Written by CL from SEASIDE

I think you could have done a little better than this. I understand rapidly changing technology...BUT, to not fit newer machines with a card which would accept the older flat screen without having to buy this oversized adapter... I am disapppointed! You could have given at least a five year phase out plan to us who get the best use out of our equipment. I run two machines in my phtoto studio so my expenses double every time I need to purchase something to make my machines run. I've been a staunch Mac user from the beginning. This has shaken my faith a little. I hope you'll listen to your loyal customers and keep thinking outside the box.

    Technology marches on.

    Written by JL from Cheyenne

    May 10, 2006

I have thousands of dollars worth of dimms, sodimms, laser printers, CRT monitors, ISA expansion cards, modems, hard drives, floppy drives, Zip drives, old software and who knows what else--all now obsolete and unused. When ADC came out I thought it was great, one cord to the monitor instead of two, and USB ports to boot (did I mentention parallel and serial devices?). Well now ADC/VGA is being replaced by DVI and all anyone can do is complain that Apple is charging money to keep their now obsolete technology alive. Should I also be mad that my 233 Bondi Blue iMac won't run Aperature?

I thought my 15" display was going south but now it is as bright and beautiful as ever. The adapter box is tucked away from my desktop out of the way and unseen, and I still have the USB ports on the monitor. It also drives my high-power-required Cube USB speakers.

The bottom line is this thing works, and is Apple simple. If you don't like the price of technology advances go buy a new monitor.

Works Fine, But Clunky and Expensive

    Written by JH from Olivette

Color me unimpressed that Apple made me buy this clunky thing in order to use my Apple Studio Display with a new G5. The good news is my beautiful flatscreen is as sharp and clean as ever (nothing like suffering with an old VGA monitor to help me appreciate the Studio Display). The bad news is there's this huge white brick to deal with, and the monitor's on-off button no longer works. Plus the connector uses up one of the G5's USB ports. Meh. And it's $100! Double meh.

    Just really BUGS me!

    Written by KH from Cary

I'm so irritated that I have experienced nothing but additional purchases since getting my new MacBook. First I have to fork out the extra $50 for the FinalCut Crossgrades and NOW another $100 just to use my monitor!?! And don't kid yourself, nothing about this adapter is compact! It's got 90 miles of cords and it will take up one of your USB connections as well. I already grumbled my complaint at the Apple store to the Mac "Genius" who just smiled as I handed over another $100 of my hard-earned money. And I guess that's what really bothers me: no matter how much they screw us over, we just keep buying more Mac products because what are you gonna' do? Buy a PC? Shya' right . . .

    Apple rip off!

    Written by RD from Walkerton

    Apr 7, 2006

I am a dedicated Mac user who always promotes the beauty of my Mac to all my PC friends. Now I am disgusted by the fact that my New Mini cannot be used with the Apple monitor that I purchased a few years ago without shelling out an additional $99. Here I finally thought I was getting a pretty good bargain from Apple after years of paying more than what non-Apple users paid. And this after I explained my situation to the "genius" at the Apple store who assured me that I would have no problem. Shame.

    What A Scam!

    Written by MB from Phoenix

    Mar 30, 2006

Nice. I have an extremely expensive monitor that you you guys were more than happy to sell me a couple of years back, and now It'll cost me a hundred bucks if I want to keep using it? My last G5 had one ADC and one DVI port, which really makes sense, especially because an adaptor to run a DVI in the ADC port is only 20 bucks. (not to mention that mac users buy new macs and are bound to have old monitors.) But I buy my new one and find out that it has 2 DVI's, and if I want to use an ADC it'll be 100 bucks. I guess I'll have to dust off my old radius monitor and use that. Anybody want to buy a 17" Studio Display? By the way, It WON'T WORK WITH A NEW MACHINE!!!! unless you got an extra 100 bucks to burn.........

    Unacceptable

Written by SC from Winston Salem

    Mar 28, 2006

I'm sorry, Apple, but this is really a disgrace. On my old G5, there are two monitor inputs, one DVI and the other ADC. A perfectly resaonable solution. Imagine my surprise when I got my new G5 today, and discover that it has two DVI inputs, with no ADC inputs for my Cinema Display. And now I have to buy this $100 monstrosity with yet another power cord? If my Cinema Display were made by Dell, I could understand. But Apple really needs to get its act together to support its own brand of monitors.
