Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Functional product just not quite up to Apple's design elegance
Written by CD from Mint Hill

First and foremost, my 23" ADC display is sharp and vivid so this product does what it's supposed to do.

Great! Let's me use my older Cinema display
Written by CW from Austin

Great product that allows me to continue to use my old 17" Cinema Display as a secondary monitor on my new Mac Pro. Simple, does the job.
Thanks, Apple!20 of 39 people found this useful

Where's the Power On function?
Written by RW from White Rock
Nov 22, 2006
I read a number of the reviews before posting, but my Power On function on my 20" Cinema Display no longer works with this adapter. The glowing "button" on the right lower corner of the screen just glows whenever the computer is on, and will not turn my MacPro on the way it did my G4.
Is this common? Apple surely didn't come up with an adapter unit this big and relatively expensive, and not include all the functions, did they?58 of 80 people found this useful

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
For what I am using it for, this thing was a steal!
Written by CS from Burbank
Nov 20, 2006
Reading below, you will find that some people are unhappy with this device, and I cannot speak to their points as being invalid, however the adapter has completely upgraded my computing life. My situation may be like many of you out there. Around 5 years ago I purchased a G4 tower and an Apple Display (17" ADC). Recently, I wanted to upgrade, but the G5 tower was a little out of my price range and it did not come with a ADC port for my display. Instead I bought a 24" iMac, and with a mini-DVI-DVI adapter plus the Apple DVI to ADC adapter I am able to use my old 17" display as a second monitor. I can have iTunes or Safari running in full view without cluttering up my iMac's workspace. As far as I am concerned this adapter saved me money and has completely changed the way I am able to experience my computer. Thanks Apple!

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Monstrously big. USB hub feature is unreliable
Written by SJ from Catonsville
Nov 2, 2006
The DVI to ADC conversion itself works well, but the brick is far bigger than it appears in pictures. It's really massive. Also, over time I found the USB hub feature of my 20" Cinema Display to be unreliable and that seems to be due to the adapter. Periodically the USB ports on the back of my display stop working and I found that I have to (crawl under my desk and) pull the power from the DVI-to-ADC adapter and plug it back in in order to get them working again. Eventually I just bought a USB hub and stopped using that feature of the adapter and display.

Everything worked fine until ...
Written by MC from Helendale

Everything worked fine until I went to remove the USB plug from back of my G5. The USB plug came apart, and that was the end of the adapter. So far I am unable to find anyone to repair it. Apple is quiet on repairing small items, even if they cost $100.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
This thing is freakin huge
Written by BK from Philadelphia
Oct 29, 2006
I'm not complaining about the fact that I need this adaptor or even the fact that I had to spend $100 for it. I'm just really disapointed with how big they had to make this thing. The brick is honestly almost the size of a Mac Mini. On top of that there are four wires coming out of it. Maybe I should be greatful that I got this 20" Cinema Display for $250 used and then only paid $100 more for the adaptor, but I would have rather paid $150 or even $200 for a new video card that would support ADC with my late model G5.

Ignore all the bad reviews
Written by JR from Montebello
Oct 23, 2006
The whole point of this is to review the product and not whine like a bunch of babies about how you had to spend an extra hundred bucks. Don't any of you even look into what you are actually buying? Apple lists all the specifications for every product they sell. I just upgraded my video card in my G4. I have a 15" apple lcd with a ADC cable. The card I purchased doesn't support an ADC connection. So I guess I'm going to have to spend another $100 bucks to use my Apple display. It doesn't bother me because I know that if I buy something from Apple, I know its going to work. Mac users should be grateful that we are not stuck with some 3rd party options. As much as you hate having to buy this adapter, you can't say it won't work flawlessly.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Works great but it seems like overkill.
Written by JB from Spring City
Oct 10, 2006
I have two takes on the ADC to DVI connector. I recently purchased a Mac Mini to use along with my existing Apple 17" Studio display. After I realized the Mini had a DVI port and I would need an adapter I was headed back to the Apple Store. (It would have been nice if the Apple sales rep would have explained this to me in the first place.) They had it in stock, I hooked it up and it works wonderfully. My gripe was I guess I was just expecting a smaller adapter and not a big "brick" with more cables. Not to mention the $99 price tag.
Does it do what it claims? Yes absolutely. Does it seem like overkill to me? Yes! I mean can't there be an easier, more compact solution?!?!32 of 41 people found this useful

Works Well
Written by MM from Dover

I bought a 20" Cinema Display at a local yard sale. I knew it would not work with my Powerbook because I've read the Mac magazines. It was just such a bargain! Imagine how happy I was when I came across this adapter. I'm very pleased with the product and would recommend it to anyone considering selling those old cinema displays.

Bad Apple!
Written by MB from Pembroke
Sep 30, 2006
I am not sure the adapter is sturdy enough (had one for laptop that has to be replaced). For those of us with large partner desks, where wiring must be run through portholes in the desk bottom, Apple's cords are too short without any way to extend them. MAINLY, Apple deserves one-star ratings in consumer care and sensitivity. This adapter, critial to some users - just like latest model PowerMacs, MacBooks, etc. - is an Apple product. When customers are buying the newer models, they should be advised that adaptive equipment may be required. That's called CARING - a better thing than GREED. What a BIG, UNPLEASANT SURPRISE when cranking up a shiny new fully-loaded Quad to find out you have no workable monitor, especially when your PowerBook is being boxed to go in the Apple Repair Shop!

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
a dirty trick!
Written by JG from brooklyn

not anticipating any compatibility issues, i didn't realize i'd need a different adaptor than the one included with the mac mini for my old monitor. shame on you, apple, for not offering an option to choose the adaptor when placing the order! and now i have to sink an additional $100 into this? i'm going to suck it up because i really have no other choice - spent $700 on the monitor 5 years ago, i'm not letting it go to waste. there are enough monitors incompatible with the standard adaptor that it really ought to be an option similar to upgrading memory, storage space, etc. now i know why people get frustrated with apple. too bad PCs are so horrible i have to take apple's abuse! grrr!

It works great.

Wow, there seems to be some angst in regards to this product. Most of the one star reviews here don't even reference a problem with the product, just folks upset that they didn't read up before they purchased new Apple products that weren't compatible with their older displays. A quick check on the specs page, a call to the Apple store, or a quick talk with a salesperson would have revealed that ADC no longer is used on Apple displays or included on new Apple products. That being said, I have used this product on several older displays to connect to newer Apple products and it works as advertised. It's a great way to continue using a great display on your new Apple computer!

Progress, folks...
Written by BH from Pompano Beach

I haven't bought it yet, but I plan to. Having read all the reviews, I have to say I would absolutely dismiss ALL the One Star reviews. Nobody complained that it didn't work..(with supported monitors...), just about the notion that an adapter was necessary, and most of all, was not free.
I have a closet full of museum pieces that nominally "work", but that have been obsoleted in one way or another. That is the price of progress. Standards evolve. We should be grateful that an dapter is even available.19 of 30 people found this useful

A Fine Product
Written by MF from New York

Stop whining about a monitor you bought a couple of YEARS ago. Video interfaces change with time, and that's life. I don't see why any of you who bought an old ACD a couple of years ago to compliment an old PowerMac (or other variant) believe you have special treatment.
This adapter works perfectly and saved me from spending another few grand on an Apple Cinema Display.
$100 vs. $2,000? I'm happy.8 of 16 people found this useful

Shame on you!!!!!
Written by BR from Kingsville
Jun 22, 2006
I recently purchased a new Mac mini. When I was hooking it up I found out my Apple Studio display wasn't going to work. And you know what? Instead of complaining at how Apple screwed me over I'm buying the adapter. The reason being I would rather use and Apple product over any PC product. The simple fact is that Apple didn't have to make an adapter. They could have just said buy a new monitor that works with your new computer. But they didn't. They thought about the people who had ADC style monitors. Besides, why is everyone complaining; Apple is a business company. They no longer work out of a garage. They are here to make money and create a great product. So STOP your whining and moaning and either buy the adapter, a new monitor, or go PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems great, what's with the bad reviews?
Written by CM from Washington
Jun 21, 2006
Been using it a day, and seems to work great. Signal is great, USB is great, and considering it has a power adapter built into the central unit, the size is not as bad as some are making it out to be. I'd rather it this way than the typical "giant block hanging off the power strip" method of most manufacturers.
The cables are great quality and very sturdy. The "upgrade" complaints are just part of the tech game, people. Apple did a neat thing with the single cable to the card, but the industry as a whole wasn't interested. It's part of what you buy into with Apple, and in my opinion, is better this way than them comforming to horrible PC-world ideas of what is good product design.
My one complaint is that this thing gets very hot, very fast. I'm a little concerned about it's lifespan (especially given at least one review stating it burned out on them, albeit after 3 years). I shelled out a LOT of clams for this 23" Cinema display and I want to use it until we don't need monitors anymore :)14 of 16 people found this useful

Whiney, whiney, boo hoo!
Written by RC from Ashland

What a bunch of whiners! Apple provides a work-around to continue the life of old technology and you ingrates can do nothing but cry and demand that Papa Apple continue to wipe your mouths and blow your noses. In a way, it's a shame that Apple didn't just blow off the old technology so you could purchase a nice, shiney bright new monitor. Nothing lasts forever, but Apple is kind enough to help us keep things going just a bit longer. Thank you, Apple.
