Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Poor result with 22" Cinema Display
Written by BH from Bloomfield
Dec 24, 2008
This adapter works fine for connecting a 17-inch Apple flat panel display to my PowerBook G4. It's a disaster when I try to do the same with my 22-inch Cinema Display: constant screen flicker, a column of dancing 3-inch-long lines on the left side of the screen and halos around all images. Switching to different screen resolutions sometimes improves or worsens the problem but never eliminates it. I can find nothing on the Apple Web site that comments on this issue, which unfortunately makes the adapter useless for the purpose I intended.

Works well but a bit pricey
Written by MP from Waltham

I bought an (ADC) old cinema display for $150...a pretty good deal until I realized I needed to buy this thing...not a good deal. All in all I ended up with a very nice USED monitor at a new monitor price. Hey, you live and your learn.

JUST WHAT THE DR ORDERED
Written by RT from columbus
Dec 13, 2008
i got a steal on a studio display off ebay to try and hook up to my 13inch macbook. ordered the adapter and bam straight out the box plugged in three cables seached for display on my laptop and boom it turned the monitor on. as for the other reviews that show cons of this, yeah its a little bigger than what you would think is needed but its just a cable and is prolly behind the desk anyway. and i have had zero, zero problems doing anything with the display using this cable. i can mirror image, split screen, drag the toolbar from monitor to monitor, shoot my laptop and use just the studio display, or mess around on ebay on my laptop and have a movie playing on the display. bottom line, the adapter is off the chain, simplicity at a pretty penny (that should be an apple moto)

Just What I Needed
Written by BB from Tulsa
Oct 20, 2008
I had bought my 20" apple cinema display and was using it for an 867MHZ G4. I decided to use the display on my new MBP as an extra screen. The size of the converter is larger than the MBP plug, but cables are long and I have them tucked behind desk on floor, so no lost desk space. I love it because I can still utilize the 2 USB ports on the back of my display, so the one I lost due to plugging in adapter gains me two more. Well worth it.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
It does the job
Written by SJ from Roskilde
Oct 6, 2008
I have an old Apple HD Cinema 23", and added a ned Mac Pro and the 20" Cinema display. The new screen works on my old G5 and off course the Mac Pro. Old HD screen only works on the G5.
My old HD Cinema screen still works brilliant, so I purchased this Adapter so I could use both screens on the new MacPro, through I had seen all the negative review stuff here.
I can now rapport that the converter works, without any flaws.
- Double screen functions works without any flaws.
- The screen saver function works okay, and does not introduce full fan motion as reported elsewhere.
- I can still bring the computer in sleep mode via the on/off function on my old HD Cinema 23"
Only difference is that to bring computer out of sleep function I now have to press esc. key on keyboard, whereas on the old G5 I could just touch the on/off function on the old HD Cinema screen.
Overall I am satisfied with this product, through it is a bit bulky (as is the converter for the MacPro screen).

gr grr grrr grrrr grrrr grrrrr grrrrrr grrrrrrrr grrrrrrrrr (etc.)

I was excited to get the fam's old 23" cinema display.. then I realized I needed this thing.. not happy to fork over the hundred bucks, let me tell you..
I finally got it and found out that I couldn't plug it into the Playstation 3 because it's not "HCSP compatible" or some such annoying thing. Shall I drop $300 in addition to the $100 I paid for this? My wallet disagrees.. I mean, c'mon, it's an older monitor and I'm a college student!
**MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THAT THE APPLE CINEMA DISPLAY NEEDS A VIDEO CARD (COMPUTER) TO WORK!! Check a Mac forum if you're skeptical.
So I guess I don't have much of a review for the actual product, but I'm giving it one star because of all the crapola associated with the Cinema Displays. hahah but it's true it's big.44 of 87 people found this useful

TOO BIG and TOO EXPENSIVE x2!
Written by TH from Colorado Springs
Sep 3, 2008
I agree with other reviews...WAY TOO BULKY and TOO EXPENSIVE! This thing is huge!
Of course it works as billed. It adapts my 23" Apple Cinema Display to work with my new MacPro...but I shouldn't have to! Adding insult to injury, I was using TWO Apple Cinema Displays...now I would have to buy TWO of these monstrous adapters (at the tune of $200) if I want to continue with the dual screen. In addition to the size and the expense, it also uses up a USB port!! So there goes two USB ports just for my monitors!
Come on, seriously?!?!31 of 42 people found this useful

Expensive, but it works.
Written by CL from Wichita
Jul 24, 2008
I just bought one of these to use my 17" Apple Studio Display with my MacBook Pro. Yes its huge (almost as big as a Mac Mini) and it totally defeats the purpose of ADC (reduce cable clutter) but it does function just as promised. Only 3 stars because there are plenty of cons (increased cable clutter, pretty expensive, bulky...) but hey, it does what you need it to do.

This adapter, while large, works exactly as I expected. Set it up in about 5 minutes with no problems. Sleep works when you use the function through the computer. I have no complaints.

Solid Product
Written by MS from indianapolis

After reading the other reviews, I felt I had to put my two cents in. I bought two 23" monitors with G4 towers several years ago. The monitors worked great (for my purposes) and these adapters allowed me to continue using them for the last several years after I upgraded to a G5 and intel based towers without as much as one problem. They are only slightly smaller than a mac mini, but they lay on the floor under my desk so who notices. So if you have upgraded to a DVI based mac and still have an ADC monitor, this little gem will let you get more use out of a perfectly good monitor. I recommend this product without reservation.

Garbage
Written by RW from Santa Monica

i bought this today to connect my old 23 cinema display to my powerbook g4. should be straightforward, right? nope. green flickering pixels everywhere. they are clustered in the dark areas of my wallpaper image and they move as the dark areas move. screen has worked fine for years on a quicksilver g4. so buyers beware. this thing has been nothing but a headache.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
Works - but with limited functionality
Written by DB from Berkeley
May 17, 2008
This adaptor does the basics: my old style 23" Cinema HD works with my new Mac Pro. Contrary to what some other users have reported, USB devices connected via the ports on the monitor are working OK for me. That's it for the good.
The bad:
The power button on the monitor no longer does any of the useful things it did when the monitor was connected directly to my G5:
It can't start up the computer. It can't put the system to sleep. It can't wake the computer from sleep. The light behind the button is either on or off. If the system is in sleep mode, the light is off (rather than doing the traditional, gentle, sleep pulse). When the system wakes up, the light goes back on.
When the computer shuts down, the power light on the monitor stays on. Does this meant that the monitor stays on when the computer is off? Probably. Unplugging the adaptor from the wall will do the trick, but shouldn't not wasting power be a little easier?85 of 123 people found this useful

Works perfectly

It's been under my desk for years doing its job without any problems. It's well worth it to keep a nice monitor compatible with new Macs. The used market is a good indication of how well these adapters hold their value; people are paying more than 75% of the new price.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter
limited functionality for some systems
Written by JC
Feb 23, 2008
I bought my PowerMac G4 dual 1.42GHz back in 2003 when it first hit the market. I have continually upgraded it as new products became available that were still compatible with the system. I have the AGP 256MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Card, 2GB DDR SDRAM PC2700, Sonnet USB 2.0 4 port PCI Card, Sonnet FireWire 400 4 port PCI Card, Sonnet FireWire 800 3 port PCI Card, M-Audio 5.1 Revolution True 24bit Sound Card. I bought the DVI to ADC Display Adapter to use with my AGP 256MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Card.
I didn't have a problem with the price of the adaptor. I was thankful that Apple made a product that allowed an older system to work with newer technology. However, I do wish Apple would be HONEST and UPFRONT about the compatibility of the DVI to ADC Display Adapter.
If your PowerMac G4 looks anything like mine it WILL NOT SUPPORT THE SLEEP OR POWER FUNCTIONS OF YOUR APPLE 17inch Active Matrix Studio Display. YOU CAN DISABLE THE SLEEP FUNCTIONS UNDER SYSTEM PREFERENCES ENERGY SAVER. If you put your monitor to sleep IT WILL NOT WAKE UP and you WILL BE FORCED TO SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE TOWERS POWER BUTTON. IF I WERE YOU I WOULDN'T DO THAT VERY OFTEN. Apple should have designed a product that worked better than this. I am thankful and disappointed at the same time.220 of 356 people found this useful

DON'T USE THE DISPLAY'S USB PORT!
Written by MG from Henderson
Feb 15, 2008
The adapter works OK with my 20" Cinema Display and my new MacPro. However, the displays' USB port was shaky under 10.5.1 but fails under 10.5.2. I had the keyboard and mouse attached and the mouse would freeze intermittently. I suggest that you do not use the displays' USB port, period.

I'm sure the adapter works fine...yawn.

Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter
Written by NS from New York

I agree with the majority of responses here-- this is ridiculous. Despite using both PC's and Macs for years, I always considered myself a Mac person, and recently when my "vintage" G4 broke down I coughed up thousands of dollars for a Macbook Pro. Now I have to cough up another $100 just to connect it to my slightly older display? Not good, Apple.
A few years ago some PC people put together a video spoofing the Mac commercials of the time. One of the lines went to the tune of-- "Upgrading a Mac is easy; when I need to upgrade, I just pick it up, put in the trash, and buy a new one..." At the time I thought it was funny but didn't see any truth to it...however, it's moves like this ($100 for an ADAPTER???? Gimme a break!!!) that make me ponder if there's some truth to that sentiment after all.109 of 157 people found this useful

Does what it needs to do, no drama
Written by PT from Kodiak
Jan 26, 2008
I got this so that I could connect my old (circa 1999) 23" Cinema Display (with the ADC connection, duh) to my MacBook Pro and my Dell at work (barf), and some day I will plug it into a Mac Mini (as soon as Apple puts 802.11n wireless in the Mini to motivate me buy one- Apple, are you listening?). Both recognize my Cinema Display immediately and without fuss thanks to this adapter. Both computers offer up a native resolution for the Cin Disp (1600 x 1024) and all options appear to be available. The USB on the CD even works through my Dell, no fuss no muss.
The adapter brick is big, and it does contribute to cable clutter (WHY did Apple dump the cool ADC system!!?????), but it works without drama. Nice. This is the unit to use to keep those old ADC displays hooked up to current DVI computers.37 of 51 people found this useful

what happened to plug and play?
Written by MM from SAINT HELENA ISLAND
Jan 18, 2008
Mac to Mac not compatible, say what! I am begginning to think that the cutting edge at Apple is now for the purpose of extracting the most dollars from loyal customers. I recently purchased a new mini and carelessly thought that it would work with my 23" HD Cinema display. But no it doesn't. Don't you think that someone would tell you, not at the Apple Store. Now after numerous calls to the customer care department and hours spent on hold they finally tell me about a new DVI to ADC adapter and guess what its only another $100.00 plus shipping. So I place the order and guess what they forgot to include a power cord. Well I am still on hold waiting for a product specialist to enlighten me as to the availability of a power cord.
