seems nice but the ad hoc mode does not work

    • Written by from Sunrise Beach

i cannot use airplay since i cannot get it to login to my home network wpa2-psk, the reason being that the device will not go into ad hoc mode as the manual says, therefore it cannot get an ip address to login and manage the psk settings. blu tooth sound is terribly choppy from my iphone even when they are in the same room with no obstructions. when i make my wireless network security free, airplay worked fine. that if course is a terrible solution. i tried to call or email support for several days with no response, they never answer their phone. so far i am very disappointed. the product looks and sounds good, but the company support and manual for the product are very questionable. very expense product for such terrible customer service.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

    • Written by from IRVINE

The good is it sounds really great for what it is. It isn't going to compete with a full blown surround system, but I was looking for a source of music in the living room. It does have an optical input, which at least from my TV would allow it to be the sound system if you live in a smaller house/apt and don't have a more robust system. It really sounds great.
The bad is it doesn't have a remote, and since mine is on the floor under a piece of furniture it means turning it off and on requires crawling on my hands and knees and holding this tiny little "button". No remote on/off is pretty horrible. The instructions are almost non-existent, so you really don't know if you could be using it better or not.
The ugly is it looks like a popcorn machine. My home is mid-century modern and this is straight up modern. I planned to have it hidden behind a piece of furniture to have sound out of nowhere. However putting it directly on carpet totally muffles the sound, so now I need to find a 8.5" round piece of marble or something to put it on. So right now this review is putting it on hardwood and it sounds terrific there, but looks totally out of place in the room.

I have no idea why there are not more dual airplay/blue tooth speakers, but it is what it is. I would rather have a traditional speaker look, but I could only find one and it was twice the price and also I am not sure it would cover the bass nearly as well as the Aura. If you like the look, can put it somewhere easy to access physically then it is a nice system.

    Nice design with fantastic sound!

    • Written by from istanbul

I just bought this system and absolutely loved it!
It sounds warmer and punches the bass sounds deeper and better than my previous sytem 'Marshall Woburn', which i've returned because of it's overall harsh sound characteristics.

I guess, the surroundly placed six midrange & tweeters gives you a nice dimention of sound, which really helps to fill the whole room easily. (tested in a 45 square/meters room)
Altough i placed it on floor near a wall, the sound was ritch and equally filling the room. It was definetely a better and different experience than my previous speaker, which sounded like a mono speaker.

The HK app gives you a chance to tune bass level, as a bonus option.. I wish i could also adjust trebble, altough using the eq of your player really helps out there.

Overall, The Aura is a very nice looking unique design, when comparing to most other options.
It sounds fantastic, and highly recommended to anyone!

    Fantastic Product!

    • Written by from Denver

After starting my search for a new speaker, I was immediately drawn to the Aura. Skeptical after reading all the reviews, regarding the flashing wi-light, and connection issues, I decided to take the plunge. Let me tell you, I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER! This is a fantastic speaker, providing 360-degree sound at a level that surpassed my expectations. The app is great, and very simple to use; like Apple products, the Aura doesn't come with a manual, but is very intuitive to set up. I was able to sync the speaker to my wi-fi network in moments, and the quality is excellent. The flashing light that people reviewed as being annoying is unnoticeable to me, as it sits on the back of the speaker, near the cable ports (and I don't keep the speaker on a pedestal in the middle of the living room). The app is a little finicky, and may have to be 'closed' and re-opened, but it takes a mere second or two for the speaker to show up again; also, the ability to adjust the volume and bass levels from the app is nice.

Don't be deterred by any of the negative comments; I was more than surprised to find out the quality, appearance and sound output of this speaker greatly exceeded my expectations, and totally negated my fears of owning this incredible piece of technology.

    Incredible sound, spotty AirPlay

    • Written by from Toronto

Before buying this speaker, I wasn't convinced that one speaker could replace multiple. However, I was utterly convinced once I played the very first notes of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature". The Harman Kardon Aura fills the entire room with sound with little indication that it's coming from just one speaker.
The bass is very deep and smooth without any distortion. It creates a very rich sound unlike any speaker I've owned before. I listen to it at just 1/3 the volume and it gives quite the punch. I have no doubt that you could fill a very large space with sound with the Aura at near full power.
The Aura is an absolutely gorgeous modern design show piece. Everybody who sees it is taken aback by its unconventional, almost alien design.
That said, I purchased the Aura to join my AirPlay ecosystem and I'm often frustrated that it has fallen asleep and no device will wake it up as is expected. I often have to restart it which takes some time because the touch sensitive buttons aren't very responsive. I will say that once AirPlay connection is achieved, it sticks with it with no interruptions, but not knowing if it'll connect is a real downer. I don't want to have to think about it. Select it on AirPlay on any device and it should just connect and start playing. That's unfortunately not the case.
So despite paying a hefty premium for AirPlay in the Aura, I'm convinced that I'm better off just plugging it into an AppleTV via optical link. At least the AppleTV is reliable in waking up when any device selects it for AirPlay. I'm still hopeful that Harman Kardon will rectify the issue with a firmware update.

Fantastic unit some bad reviews should be disregarded.

    • Written by from Clifton Heights

I purchased this unit after some debate. My main reason for purchase was sound quality and pricing, portability was not needed for my application. I listen to a wide variety of music from classical to jazz, rock, EDM and anything in between. This executes well on all styles. I am using the Aura as a bedroom speaker. This should be treated as leisurely listening device not a replacement for quality high end separate speakers with a high end receiver. Though it has a high volume threshold with clarity. Most will be surprised by what it can do.
I've listened to Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air which may have a slight edge in the mid tones of music but for $200 more I found it to not be worth it. In comparison to friends that have the Bose Soundlink II and III this Aura is superior yet it lacks portability. As far as reviews about connectivity I found this to be extremely simple. I'm using the Ad-hoc mode which allows me to play it as a wifi speaker through iTunes. I'm using a mid 2011 iMac and an Airport Extreme router. There is a millisecond delay when controlling volume and a second delay when manually changing tracks. Note that you don't lose a second of the song iTunes waits with the delay in communication. With Bluetooth via an iPhone it's just as reliable.
As far as the light in the unit. Unless you're hyper sensitive to light when trying to sleep with music playing that won't be an issue. I would chalk up some reviews to user error. I have not dealt with customer support from Harman so I have no opinion on that. I haven't used it with Apple TV or with a PC. The only issue I had was there was no manual in the box. Easily found on Harman Kardon's website. If you want a stationary speaker in this price range this is a great unit with fantastic sound quality for the price. Plenty of connection possibilities and loads of headroom for cranking it up.

    The speaker is so awesome

    • Written by from Lexington

The speaker is so awesome. I love it! My mom and I do a lot of sewing downstairs in the basement and I always wished we could listen to my music on the Apple TV. The speaker is big in size. I had no idea :0). My music is stored in iTunes, but I streamed it to the Apple TVs for easy listening. My sewing area is a mess and needs to be made room for the speaker so when I get moved back down there I want to have a special place to put the speaker. I'll be moving it place to place wherever I am in the house.

Best Wireless Speaker I have ever purshased !!!

    • Written by from Fort Lee

First thing I looked for when I shopped around for speaker is the Sound quality and this speaker does far better job than I hoped for.
I have bought this speaker for the living room use and it has just awesome bass, mid, and high all around and I am just loving it.
The clarity and the punch of base I get from this beautiful speaker is top of the line!

Second thing I look for in wireless speaker was the connectivity.
I have had several Bluetooth/wireless speakers from Bose, Samsung, and Ultimate Ears and this Harman Kardon Aura was the easiest to connect and I have never had any connection drop for this. AirPlay and Bluetooth connection is so easy I got it to play music from my iPhone within a less than a minute after I got it out of the box!

Third, I love the design of this.
It's simple, clean and clear feeling with just right amount of LED lightings on it. I love the ring of light inside center of the speaker when I adjust the volume. Its elegant design and perfectly what I wanted it to be~!!

Love Sound quality, easy to connect, lovely design. Every penny was worth it~!!

Love the speakers but unfortunate, its not compatible to mac book pro.

    • Written by from Dubai

I love the design of these speakers. The sound was beautiful and the bass was incredible for such a small device compared to huge sound systems.

However, due to the wifi connectivity throughout a mac book pro, you cannot connect to bluetooth to these speakers without it breaking off every 5 seconds or the song restarting repeatedly. DO NOT BUY IF YOU USE A MAC BOOK PRO!

    Great additional speaker

    • Written by from San Diego

I have a pair of Beolab 8000 speakers hooked up with a Martin Logan subwoofer for my living room, which are all connected to Airplay using Airport Express modules. But I needed something to bring sound to the deck off the living room where we spend a lot of time, especially in the afternoons. I tried a Bose Mini, and the sound was very muddy. But when I got the HK Aura, it really did the trick. Sound is crisp and the lows are just right. When I compare the B&O speakers to the HK, it's hard to tell any difference. But when all are played together in the living room, the HK really compliments the other speakers and gives an extra dimension of sound in the room. Using the Apple Remote, I can control the volume on each speaker system to get the perfect balance.

    BEST of the Best!

    • Written by from Glendora

There a ton of awesome speakers out there on the market but the Aura is one of the BEST wireless speakers. It combines both Bluetooth and AirPlay over Wifi which is an incredible feature in itself. Most speakers are either one or the other. Not only that, but the sound that this speaker produces is nuts! It is rich, round, and possibly one of the best speakers I have ever heard. Try this speaker out, you will not be disappointed!

    Terrible experience! Avoid!

    • Written by from SAN FRANCISCO

This speaker has a whole host of connectivity issues for AirPlay. The wifi is very spotty. I have to have it right next to my Airport Base Station and the device streaming to it must be within 15 feet too. I have a single room apartment and just moving around the apartment with my iPhone the speaker will lose connection. I've also had several times when the device will stop showing up in the speaker list and will need a full factory reset to get it going again. I've also had the speaker turn itself on and volume up / down at random, assuming its getting some kind of interference from a neighbor's phone / tv / something, or it has some kind of quality control issue and buttons are shorting out... either way.. very unstable and frustrating experience, and HK offers little to no customer support. None of my emails have ever been replied to from their product support team.

Beautiful design, great connectivity options - annoying execution

    • Written by from NEWTON

This was an impulse buy based on design looks, all I'd gone into the store to do was buy a phone dock. Connected to my device well via Bluetooth and then.......I couldn't get that wifi light to stop blinking. I don't leave my router on and it's picking up the other 50 networks in my area and won't stop trying to connect. Not that it ever gets enforced but technically a felony. I read the manual and it's 'supposed' to go off. But I guess not if it sees open and unlocked networks (which aren't mine). Sorry to have to take it back tomorrow. Basic functionality HK - Bluetooth on/off, WiFi on/off. That light is about as relaxing as a car seat belt icon WITH the dinging.

Excellent performance and super cool to boot.

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I'll be honest, the cool shape of this extraterrestrial speaker is what first drew me to it but when I cranked it up, boy was I surprised. There is a richness to the sound that is completely unexpected. The low tones are full but not overbearing and the high notes sing with a real brightness. I highly recommend this device, it's one purchase you won't regret!

Excellent sound quality, but TERRIBLE TERRIBLE connection and app.

    • Written by from Montreal

    1. Sound quality is among the best at 400 price level.
    2. 360 angle distribution of sound. (This is really nice)
    3. Beautiful design.

    1. Wifi (Airplay) function is practically broken. Very picky on your router... I tried three most updated routers, only one can pair with this speaker.
    2. Bluetooth connection is slightly better than the wifi, but still not close to competing products. You have to manually connect to your bluetooth device every time...
    3. The App for remote control is horrible.... you have to wait for 10s for the connection before you can adjust your volume.... which is nuts....
    4. BTW, You can only adjust the bass in the stupid app.
    5. I don't know if it is due to connection issues, the sound sometimes go to very low....

Conclusion: For speaker functionality, it is very good and the speaker is absolutely beautiful. It is also very well built. However, HK company should really fire their wireless connection department, they did a horrible job for the wifi, bluetooth and app. I really wanna to keep it, but sadly, I'm cannot stand the poor connections.

I would give the speaker 5 stars for the speaker part and 0 star for the wireless part. Since one major selling point is the wireless connectivity, I decided in total give it a 2 stars.
