    Brilliantly clever product.

    • Written by from Bryan

Sure, it's just a dock. Fundamentally, its only function is to turn your existing cable up by 100 or so degrees, but this provides a lot of practical convenience, whether on your nightstand for charging, or on a desk for syncing and heads-up display.

Rather than design just another pretty dock basically impractical for anyone with an iPhone case, TwelveSouth has thoughtfully designed the HiRise to be nearly universally compatible with any case out there by using Apple’s own cable. This isn’t lazy, it’s brilliant. Because of it, this dock will work with almost any case that accepts the tiniest, highest-quality cable out on the market (and everyone already has one!).

This design choice isn’t the only thing that makes the HiRise great. It is clear from initially opening the box that TwelveSouth has put a tremendous amount of thought and pride into the whole experience. The stand exudes quality, as does even the packaging and assembly instructions. The allen-head cap screws have a secure and organized place in the box, and the allen key has a permanent home inside the base of the dock itself. Every single cleverly-designed step in the unbox & assembly process will bring a little smile to your face. It's reminiscent in this regard of Apple's own products.

Best part? The Lightning standard is new and expected to be around for a decade. Since this dock is well-designed and adaptable, it should last through many future generations of iPhones. In a market where we too often begrudgingly pay $30-40 for a molded plastic case to be used for a few months or a year before moving on, it is an absolute delight to pay the same for a clever, convenient product that is solid as a rock and will remain useful for many years.

    Works great with iPad Air!!!

    • Written by from Ajax

I recently upgraded from iPad 3rd generation to iPad air. Apple does not manufacture docks that would be compatible with iPad Air.

This dock works perfectly with the iPad Air. The base is very stable even when typing on the iPad.

The most elegant dock out there

    • Written by from TORONTO

This dock is the best looking one available, but it is also probably the most functional. iPhone speakers remain unobstructed, making your phone work perfectly on your desk with the internal iPhone speaker on. I was leery of the claims that you can easily remove the phone with one hand, but once you get the hang of it, yes it is as easy as you could wish in such a sleek design. Only downside: assembly is at best awkward. Big caveat: Do not use the 2 meter lightning cable that Apple recently introduced! It's too thick, and nothing will work properly when you put the gadget together. The company was extremely helpful in sorting out my problems. This dock is worth every penny.

    Excellent product

Well designed and well made. Unboxing this stand was almost as fun as unboxing my 5S. Machine threaded hex bolts with included allen wrench. Most important: the lightning connector comes with different lengths to accommodate phones or iPads in cases. Also, the "arm" that the device rests on is adjustable (width) to accommodate cases as well. Better design than the Apple dock connector. Just remember it doesn't come with the lightning cable.

This is the defacto stand for iPhone 5

    • Written by from Roebuck

From it's sharp presentation of the iPhone to the accommodations of cased devices to the sturdiness it provides, this is a simple yet elegant stand that achieves perfection. A moderate effort to assemble, HiRise Stand nonetheless is worth the effort which is quickly justified once you start to use the stand. I was pleasantly surprised at how firm the non-slip feature was of such an elevated stand...it never feels like it will tip over. But it's biggest attribute is its ability to mount any iPhone's case...something even Apple's dock prevents with Apple's case.

    Gorgeously Minimalistic

    • Written by from Tracy

Works great with my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini Retina with SmartCase. It's just mildly annoying that assembly is required but because of the different types of cases the stand works with, you are given a choice of 3 lightning "clips". The flexibility and elegance of the stand more than makes up the ten minutes it took to put together.

Compared to other options not bad...

    • Written by from San Carlos

But, the whole thing is a little iffy to put together, as you have to do a decent amount of fidgety adjustment to custom fit to your phone. Adjustment involving holding two metal pieces at an angle, at a distance, while screwing in hex bolts from the bottom.

It comes with 3 height options for: phone with no case, phone with medium case, phone with large case. Of course, all 3 cases I had on hand were solidly between the "no case" and medium case" option. So the phone works with the medium case option, but is a bit wobbly.

All in all, the stand is very light, so required 2 hands to remove the phone, and anytime you move the stand, or pick it up, it's likely the bottom plate will fall out.

For 35 dollars, best option out there. If you want to spend 95 there are superior heavy weight easily customizable options out there.

Good product but assembly is not for the faint of heart

I'm usually somewhat capable of assembling things, but had moderate difficulty installing 4 small screws with 10 fat fingers and then trying to embed the cable in the track on the bottom.

    Clever product with implementation issues

    • Written by from Fairfax

The HiRise is a pretty decent product. It has nice weight, and as a machined aluminium product, it fits nicely into Apple's design language. The fact that it only fits Apple Lightning cords (I have a few from Monoprice, and the heads are too wide and cords too thick to fit into the stand opening) is annoying but understandable. There are also a couple of fit-and-finish issues that come from it being a self-assembly product - there are some small gaps where the stand meets the base. But those are trivial issues.

My biggest issue is the cheap plastic cap on the bottom that holds the hex wrench. The HiRise as a whole feels like a solid product, so to have a thin piece of plastic wedged onto the base that prevents the stand from sitting flat on the desk is a little disconcerting. It feels like an after-thought to an otherwise stellar product.

On the whole, though, it's a very nice stand.

    Brilliant Design

    • Written by from Calgary

I have a number of 12South products and they are all beautifully designed and well built.
This stand is pleasing to the eye, a breeze to install and very sturdy. The solid aluminium base is weighty enough to not skid around your desk when you press the home button on your phone. It has adapters to suit most cases and it sits up at an angle on your desk that makes it very functional. I use it with the Logitech Bluetooth Easy Switch K811 keyboard to quickly shft between my Macbook, my iPad3 and my iPhone5.

Works great with or without a case

    • Written by from Pittsburgh

The stand is made very well, with aluminum to match Apple products, especially an iMac.

It was easy to assemble and to use.

Works great whether you have a case on your phone (2 different adjustment tabs are included for use with thin case or with a thick case) or even if you run a caseless program.

You need to have a spare Lightning cable to use with this stand.

    Perfect !!!

Ignore the negative comments about the assembly, 4 screws a couple of turns and your done. My iPhone 5 and my iPad mini fit it perfectly without any adjustments. I bought it because I wanted a docking base so I could use my phone as a bedside clock/alarm…It's perfect for the job...

    Too bad

    • Written by from DIXON

It was a good try, but with a little more effort, it could have been a useful product. The "base cap" intended to be the cable cover on the bottom of the unit is made of a cheap flimsy plastic that is supposed to snap into place. It doesn't hold the cable in place and it falls off whenever you try to reposition the stand. If they had just made the cover out of the same aluminum that most of the rest of the unit is made from, then it may have worked better. Also, in their attempt to make it "air"-like, they made the base too thin. So, the cable has to take a very sharp 90+ degree turn, which puts pressure on the cheap plastic cover. And the groove for the cable is not quite wide enough to hold my standard Apple Lightning cable. If they had made the base a little bit thicker, they could have had a better path for the cable to stay in place and maybe even had room to include some sort of plastic clips to keep it there securely. There is a plastic cable clip that you are supposed to select from three different sizes, depending on your case thickness. Choose wisely - you will not be able to change it without destroying it. In an effort to make the cheap plastic cap look intentional, they also put one in just for show on the top of the rear support. Finally, the unit is not heavy enough to be stable. Even with just an iPhone, it wobbles around - partly because the cap on the base won't stay in place and partly because the front support is not wide enough. There is no easy way to adjust the back support, so using devices with different thicknesses is not an option either.

Good product, but the 2m iPhone lightning cord is an issue….

    • Written by from Marlboro

Just got two of the longer iPhone 5 lightening cords (2m)…. be aware that while the cord connector itself is the same size, the cord is slightly thicker than the 1m cord…..so is an issue if you use it with 12 South's HiRise Dock for iPhone. I managed to make it work, but have to tape the bottom of the docking station where the cord threads out to keep the cover together. Otherwise, I like this docking station.

    Works Great

    • Written by from Vancouver

Bought it for my new iPhone 5s, if you use case and need a dock this is the best after my research fit great to pretty much all kind of cases with lightning plug, back tall support stand can be adjust too so even iPad with thick cases will work too, built quality is very solid... Well the reason I rated at 4 stars is I wish they charge $10 more and include a lightning cable.

A little advice to Apple Store I am sure this great product from HiRise will sell way more if you have it in-store than either I have to pay shipping or spend up to $70 dollars to get free shipping well I live 2mins walk to a Apple Store.

Be careful -- doesn't work with 6' APPLE cable

    • Written by from Vancouver

I laid out $35 for Apple's own 6' foot cable because they said this works "exclusively with the Apple Lightning cable". What they don't tell you is that it only works with the 3' cable!! The 3' cable is a little skinnier and the tolerances on this stand are incredibly tight.

By using a bigger hammer I got it put together -- but assembly is not for the fainthearted.

And, like several of the other reviewers have noted, it really is a little tippy for my iPad Mini.

    Excellent Concept w/ Tight Specs

    • Written by from Seattle

As other reviewers stated, it's an effectively minimalist design. However, like many minimalist designs, what looks and functions beautifully in ideal conditions usually means tightly restricted performance and maintenance. There is no room for error. So get this information right and you'll be happy with the Hi-Rise stand.

The packaging says "Works with Apple Lightning Cable," and I'd read here that cord thickness was an issue with this base. I was prepared, I thought.

The 1m length that came with my iPhone 5s is a little short, so I asked an Apple Store employee if there was a difference between the 1m and 2m lightning cable thickness. He said no. He was wrong. The only lightning cord that works with this is the 1 meter cord length from Apple. The 2m cable is thicker and will not bend tightly enough, or slip easily into the groove in the base.

So it's a great product if you only use the 1m cord. Twelve South needs to change their packaging to ** "Works only with 1m Apple Lightning Cable."** Twelve South should know that the longer length doesn't work, and note that on their box and online. I ruined a $30 cable, but it looks nice and works well with the 1m length.

YOU MUST USE THE STANDARD LENGTH LIGHTNING CABLE!

    • Written by from Vancouver

I purchased this as I keep my iPhone in a case and like to dock it. I installed it fine (although all of the parts a super tiny, which is very difficult to manage - and I even have small hands.

After putting it together, I realized I needed to use a longer cable with it. I had purchased the Apple 2m lightning cable so I took out the standard length cord with no difficulty. When I went to put the stand back together with the 2m cord, the plastic clip jammed in the dock. It wouldn't budge, and I had to use pliers to get the cord back out. Turns out, the 2m long cable is the tinniest bit thicker than the regular length cord. Twelve South should definitely put in a disclaimer that the stand must be used with the standard cable!
