    Fast, quiet, works great

I've been using this for the past 8 months or so, mainly for my video projects and backups. It does have excellent transfer rates via Thunderbolt. Now when I have to switch to USB drives to move files, I really do see the difference in speed. The unit quiet and nice. I haven't experienced any issues with it so far.

    Great, easy-to-use, fast storage solution.

Bought this yesterday (6GB version). Connected TB, powered it up, and voila, a new 6GB volume formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If all you're wanting is a nice big single volume, it's ready to go that way. And, of course, since it's running through the Thunderbolt bus, it's running just as fast as any standard internal SATA HDD would.

I obviously cannot comment on its long-term reliability or other configuration options from direct experience, but I can see that it would be fairly easy to reformat and run using various RAID configurations assuming one is even remotely familiar with the process (if not, there's always Google). Long-term, I'll replace the two 3GB drives with a pair of SSDs for even better performance.

The case on this thing is rock-solid; it feels like a tank. There is built-in cooling, but it runs quite quietly… I moved about 2TB of data onto it last night and, while sitting a couple of feet from the unit I was aware the fan was running, it was hardly offensive by any stretch.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the purchase and, if you're looking for an easy expansion solution that knows how to hustle, I don't think this option will disappoint.

Excellent performance and plenty of storage

This is an amazing piece of gear. Works great with my Macbook Pro based editing suite. I do fast turn around jobs quite often and this drive delivers the speed and capacity along with the RAID1 protection for doing small to medium HD projects. This really is a quality product, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone who needs good speed, and reliability.

Register your product for 3 year warranty

Sor far, it's been great. Running RAID-1 As a Time ?Machine backup. But, looking at Peter v., if you had registered your product with LaCie, you would have a 3 year warranty

This unit running as RAID 1 has blown me away. The library browsing speed for images has increased dramatically and makes it so much easier to multitask without causing crashes. Finally I can manage my files as fast I want to. Great product, and will buy again.

I have this desktop raid working with my iMac and it is very good. High capacity and brilliant speed is like a dream come true. Best thing is that when I am doing audio editing it is really quiet too.

    Well built, fast drive

Ordered this unit to act as my main backup service, and long term storage drive for old projects. I love the easy to use RAID setup, and the speed of the unit. I often delayed backups because of the time it would take. Now I don't have to panic if it does go down. Fast backups and restoration is available now with this drive.

    Quality product. Works well.

I needed a lot of storage, so I'm running this unit in RAID 0 mode, for extra capacity. I've got another Thunderbolt for backup and redundancy, so it's ok. I've been using it for storing video projects and my Lightroom catalogs, they take up a huge amount of room. It's a perfect storage system for my needs, I'm very happy with the speed and efficiency.

    Excellent Drive

We've been looking for a dependable backup unit for our home office and did a lot of research before landing on this drive. No complaints so far, it works exactly as advertised. Very fast, simple to use, and RAID system was easy enough to set up. It's also very quiet while working.

    Outstanding Product

    • Written by from Oviedo

Purchased the 6TB 2big Thunderbolt at the local Apple Store to use as DAS for my Retina Macbook Pro when used at my desk via the Belkin TB dock. The build quality of the enclosure is far above the WD MyBook stuff - really impressive aluminum housing and surprisingly heavy. It is very quiet as well, a concern I had prior to purchasing. I have it sitting on top of my Klipsch subwoofer under the desk and I cannot hear it. The included HDD's are also very quiet in that I cannot hear head seek noises.

Be aware that this is not a hardware RAID device - the computer sees 2 drives over the TB connection (similar to an eSATA port multiplier) and you use OS X Disk Utility to either leave it as JBOD or create a RAID 1 or RAID 0 volume.

    Highly recommended.

I bought this unit to slowly gather all my files from several external HDs; I stripped the RAID nomenclature, got back to the two HDs in single mode and I'm very satisfied. Noise is down, speed is great.
    Very nice enclosure.

Fast, Great Build Quality, and Great for Video Editing

    • Written by from Austin

I purchased this unit along with a 2012 iMac to upgrade my FCPX video editing suite from a 2009 Mac Pro setup. I keep all my working files on the external drive, and only keep the OS and applications on the iMacs internal drive. Running the LaCie in Raid 0 configuration, video editing from this drive is super fast and smooth. Like the iMac, this drive features excellent build quality and runs cool. I plan to get a second one soon and mount them using the LaCie Desk Rack. Highly recommended!

I have two of these drives now, they are my main drives for video editing and media storage. The Thunderbolt speed is so fast that I can edit videos directly from the drive, it's so much more convenient than shuffling data there and back. They are quiet and reliable, just what I was looking for.

I was using an older version of a Thunderbolt-equipped drive, but recently decided to upgrade to this 6TB model. It was easy to setup, and has been working flawlessly so far. The speeds are great. It's perfect for editing video and sound and the quality is real nice.
