I've been using this drive for months now, mostly for music and video projects and so far I haven't had any issues at all. I love the speed, the solid build and the overall reliability. I am really happy with it.

    Fatal Error

    • Written by from Toronto

This drive worked well to start, but less than 2 months in it won't mount. Disk Utility shows the drive is 'offline', but cannot fix or identify the problem. 3rd party software can't fix it either.

I migrated all of my important files to this mirrored RAID, thinking that it would be safe and everything would be backed up. I never expected for both drives to go down! Now I'm sitting here unable to access necessary files for my business and having to spend my time contacting Lacie and not knowing if they will even have a fix. This is not what i expected from a product that Apple backs or from Lacie.

I've filed a ticket with Lacie and hopefully will get a solution. Otherwise this will have been by far my worst experience with Apple and the products they sell.

Many hundreds of dollars, many hours of my time, potential loss of clients and potentially the loss of important data. This is not the price I saw on Apple's site.

    Fast, quiet, works great

    • Written by

I've been using this for the past 8 months or so, mainly for my video projects and backups. It does have excellent transfer rates via Thunderbolt. Now when I have to switch to USB drives to move files, I really do see the difference in speed. The unit quiet and nice. I haven't experienced any issues with it so far.

    Power Adapter Problem

    • Written by from Edmonton

I have also had a problem with the power adapter input. It requires pressure placed on power adaptor plug in order to work. I am looking for a decent replacement and will stay away from LaCie in the future.

    Unmounts during sleep

    • Written by from Omaha

This drive is fine other than it unmounts itself every night when I put my MBP Retina to sleep. Apparently this is a known issue by LaCie, however they claim it's a Mavericks bug. The bug was fixed by Apple back in Leopard but then reappeared with Snow Leopard as well as Mavericks. It's very annoying, I must stop and restart drive every morning. Would definitely recommend trying the drive out and having the ability to return it if you have this issue.

    Great, easy-to-use, fast storage solution.

    • Written by from Jacksonville

Bought this yesterday (6GB version). Connected TB, powered it up, and voila, a new 6GB volume formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If all you're wanting is a nice big single volume, it's ready to go that way. And, of course, since it's running through the Thunderbolt bus, it's running just as fast as any standard internal SATA HDD would.

I obviously cannot comment on its long-term reliability or other configuration options from direct experience, but I can see that it would be fairly easy to reformat and run using various RAID configurations assuming one is even remotely familiar with the process (if not, there's always Google). Long-term, I'll replace the two 3GB drives with a pair of SSDs for even better performance.

The case on this thing is rock-solid; it feels like a tank. There is built-in cooling, but it runs quite quietly… I moved about 2TB of data onto it last night and, while sitting a couple of feet from the unit I was aware the fan was running, it was hardly offensive by any stretch.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the purchase and, if you're looking for an easy expansion solution that knows how to hustle, I don't think this option will disappoint.

Excellent performance and plenty of storage

    • Written by

This is an amazing piece of gear. Works great with my Macbook Pro based editing suite. I do fast turn around jobs quite often and this drive delivers the speed and capacity along with the RAID1 protection for doing small to medium HD projects. This really is a quality product, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone who needs good speed, and reliability.

Stuck with a defective unit. Warranty sounds a lot better than it is.

    • Written by from Burnaby

Looks great. Is larger and heaver than expected. When this product works it's great, but...

I've had this product for about 90 days and found the power supply connector on the housing to be defective in the last 45 days. The unit only works when there is pressure applied to the power adapter that connects to the housing. Lacie support suggested I go out and purchase an equivalent power adapter for the unit (at my own cost) to rule out that the power adapter wasn't the issue. I did this and determined that the issue is a defective connector on the housing.

Faced with the inconvenience of backing up my drives, erasing data on the Lacie drives and sending the entire unit back for repair (again at my own cost) I asked the manufacturer if there was an option to get a replacement housing unit first so I could maintain possession of the original drives and my data. Apparently replacement is not covered under the standard warranty and I have to send them the entire unit in for repair. I am in the process of doing this and will provide an update as to the progress.

If you do buy this drive I recommend you open it and ensure it is in good working order within Apple's return period. I made the mistake of purchasing this in December, not setting it up until January and later discovering there was an issue with the hardware.

If this were an Apple manufactured product the support would be much better.

Nice Disk once I got a good copy

    • Written by from Poughquag

I've always had very good experience with LaCie drives over the past 4 years and this disk is no exception, I've been using this for approx 6 months with no issues. Unfortunately, I had to buy/return a few units before I found a good copy that doesn't click all the time, but once I found a good one, it's been great. My current unit is so quiet, it's on my desk 2.5 feet from my ear and I never hear it, but some of that is also based on it's usage which is just for my iTunes Library. Very happy with my purchase.

Register your product for 3 year warranty

Sor far, it's been great. Running RAID-1 As a Time ?Machine backup. But, looking at Peter v., if you had registered your product with LaCie, you would have a 3 year warranty

This unit running as RAID 1 has blown me away. The library browsing speed for images has increased dramatically and makes it so much easier to multitask without causing crashes. Finally I can manage my files as fast I want to. Great product, and will buy again.

    Well built, fast drive

    • Written by

Ordered this unit to act as my main backup service, and long term storage drive for old projects. I love the easy to use RAID setup, and the speed of the unit. I often delayed backups because of the time it would take. Now I don't have to panic if it does go down. Fast backups and restoration is available now with this drive.

    Quality product. Works well.

I needed a lot of storage, so I'm running this unit in RAID 0 mode, for extra capacity. I've got another Thunderbolt for backup and redundancy, so it's ok. I've been using it for storing video projects and my Lightroom catalogs, they take up a huge amount of room. It's a perfect storage system for my needs, I'm very happy with the speed and efficiency.

    Head Parking Noise When Idle

    • Written by from D.D.O

Stay away from this Lacie, the 3TB Seagate HD makes a constant Head parking noise, I sent mine back to Lacie after they did all kinds of test they found nothing wrong and they sent it back admintitng that the noise is a known problem with the two 3TB Seagate HD used, and that noise is considered normal.
On the good side they are fast and they only make the noise when idle.

We've been looking for a dependable backup unit for our home office and did a lot of research before landing on this drive. No complaints so far, it works exactly as advertised. Very fast, simple to use, and RAID system was easy enough to set up. It's also very quiet while working.

    Outstanding Product

    • Written by from Oviedo

Purchased the 6TB 2big Thunderbolt at the local Apple Store to use as DAS for my Retina Macbook Pro when used at my desk via the Belkin TB dock. The build quality of the enclosure is far above the WD MyBook stuff - really impressive aluminum housing and surprisingly heavy. It is very quiet as well, a concern I had prior to purchasing. I have it sitting on top of my Klipsch subwoofer under the desk and I cannot hear it. The included HDD's are also very quiet in that I cannot hear head seek noises.

Be aware that this is not a hardware RAID device - the computer sees 2 drives over the TB connection (similar to an eSATA port multiplier) and you use OS X Disk Utility to either leave it as JBOD or create a RAID 1 or RAID 0 volume.

    Highly recommended.
