    Looks isn't everything!

    • Written by from København Ø

I have had the Speck smartshell for about a year and have enjoyed the black, sleek look!!
But I can only agree with the rest about the mold problems!
Tonight my smartshell broke, when I removed it to dust off my Mac:-( I went online to see, if I could find a new cover, that was more sturdy and I saw all of these reviews about mold and easy breaks.
I live in Denmark, Scandinavia and you can hardly call Denmark a country with a humid climate - on the contrary! And I NEVER bring my Mac outside the house, on vacation, into the bathroom or kitchen, where it can be humid. I clean/dust off my Mac every 2-3 weeks (remove the shell) and still there is mold, which also has resulted in scratches - even though I clean it carefully with a soft cloth.
To compare I also have my iPad mini (2yrs now) with a similar cover, but different brand. I bring it everywhere, travelling around the world in my job (lots of humid places). I clean that too regularily and NEVER had a sign of mold on that.
Something is very WRONG!!! And I can not recommend this cover for the Mac Pro! Looks is not everything!

    breaks way too easily

    • Written by from Rochester Hills

Bought this 14 months ago. After 10 months, noticed the corners had broken off. I don't take the computer out of the house, and treat it very carefully. I returned the case, and several weeks later, received a replacement under warranty. One week later, noticed the corners had broken off, on the new case! I ignored it, since I don't take it out of the house. Just picked it up to use - the bottom half of the case fell off! Extremely poor material - cannot take even the lightest amount of use.

    Boo.

I bought this case a year ago, I am quite gentle with it as it houses my retina display macbook. Even though I am gentle with it, it has broken twice. Speck offers a warranty where you send them back your broken case and they will replace it, although this is a good deal, it is still time consuming to get is shipped and you have to pay $15 (that they don't reimburse you for) to send if off to them also. I definitely would not purchase it again.

    Speck Case Mold Problem

    • Written by from Merrimack

I've had this case for approximately 1 year now, and like other users, I have had problems with black mold spots on the bottom of my computer. I wipe it down occasionally with Clorox wipes in the hopes that it will kill whatever is growing and eating (yes eating!) into the aluminum case. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to ditch the speck case. Disappointing!

    Disappointing

Beautiful colour but really disappointed by the quality... I put it only one time in my backpack, not in the same pocket as my keys (or any potentially dangerous item for the case), and the top part is already all scratched. And because of the vivid colors, the scratches are even more visible...

    Not perfect - beware!!

    • Written by from Warsaw

I would agree with the previous comment regarding mould and scratches on the front side and base.

I have used this case from day one an mould has appeared and scratches, i followed the manufacturers instructions and washed the case periodically.

If you think this case will keep your macbook scratch free - look somewhere else.

Apple - you should do your homework.

if I could post pics on here you could see for yourself.

I will be contacting Speck regarding this issue.

    MOLD!

    • Written by from houston

I spent around $50 for this case, I thought it would be the best for my new mac. Recently I discovered MOLD on the case and my laptop! Not only was there mold, but some sort of reaction has left dents in my laptop!

    Speck 13' SmartShell Case

    • Written by from Green Bay

I've used this case since the first day that I bought my macbook which was almost a year from now. I've had no problems with it, and I thought that everything was perfect...until about 5 days ago I decided to take off the cover to see if there was any dust. I was expecting to find dust, NOT mold! These Speck cases are not compatible with the aluminum on Mac's. There are permanent markings and scribbled looking engravings from....I don't even know what, but it was definitely not from me. I looks like some type of acid reaction? There were also white spots all over (top and bottom), from the mold. I did some research and found that another person had the same problem as I have using the Speck Case. I thought that paying the $50 and putting this case on my computer would keep it from getting permanent markings and damage, but oh boy was I wrong! Now I have markings all over, and I'm super upset. Apple should not sell a product that is not compatible with their own. I would recommend getting just a traditional bag or pouch with a zip so your Mac can breathe, instead of buying this case. It's way cheaper and safer for your laptop. Who knows, maybe I am the only one experiencing this...but I know for sure that I'm not using my Speck case again!
