The drive was quick and simple to setup. Within a matter of minutes I had it connected and was able to start transferring all of my photos and family videos to it. Since then it's always been fast to access any of my data and the drive hasn't skipped a beat once.

I have one of these for my video projects. It's very fast and works well with everything I've put it though. It worked right out of the box. It's quiet and matches perfectly with my new MacBook Pro. LaCie did a great job in my opinion!

This drive was very easy to setup. All I had to do was connect it with the included Thunderbolt cable to my iMac, and just follow the setup utility. This drive is now my new best friend. It hasn't skipped a beat since I configured it. It's quiet and has excellent speeds.

    Noisy Noisy Noisy

One of the things I like about my iMac is that it's silent. This drive ruins it. My favorite thing about this drive is when it goes to sleep. No more noise. It does include a Thunderbolt cable, which is nice. Too bad it's so short, meaning I can't place it around the corner and in my closet where just maybe I might not be able to hear it anymore. Did I mention it was noisy?

ThunderSlow and Corrupted my video files.

Out of the box it felt heavy and sturdy. I was excited to get 3TB and Thunderbolt speed. But, this hard drive did not perform at thunderbolt speeds. Not even close. All it did do however, was slow down my editing and to make matters worse its my only drive to corrupt and lose files. I knew I should have stuck with the G Tech. Back to the Apple Store I go to return this brick. I don't have time to mess with getting another one just to check if mine was a defect. It shouldn't happen in the first place. I'm just disappointed with the hassle.

    Would Never Buy Another LaCie

I have had 2 LaCie's and they have both crapped out on me. I have never had another drive break, but every LaCie I own is a brick. I would stay away from them. they look great, but are not reliable.

Sorry LaCie- I teach at a middle school Mac lab where I have had five of your drives die on me over the past three years- 1 just this week broke down. Won't be buying!

Purchased this drive to work with imac Time Machine. Read several reviews that stated it was noisy. This is far from the case. While there is some noise due to the spinning drive it is not annoying. Using the drive with thunderbolt. Very fast back up. Lots of storage space. It also works with the sleep mode on my imac. Great drive and highly recommend it. Well worth the money.

    Not that fast

The box says "Thunderbolt speeds UP TO 10 gigs per second". I got it home and it's doing 140 gigs in about 90 minutes. Bought this in the store and didn't notice the store website saying 180 mbps. Kind of B.S. for a $300 hard drive connected to Thunderbolt. Certainly faster than my USB 2.0 drives, but I am calling "false advertising" and not even sure I am going to keep the drive.

    High quality hard drive

I am looking for a performance hard drive for my primary drive and can last for many years. This one is definitely looked hight quality and fast. It's easy to setup and will not generate too much heat. Performance is better than my internal hard drive in my Mac. The only reason I am giving only 4 stars is the noise, read/write is quiet but I mean the mechanical noise in general. There is a difference with the drive turned on or off particularly at night, the noise is more noticeable. Comparing to my cheaper LaCie Porsche Design hard drive (super quiet), this D2 drive is a lot noisier although it's not too annoying.

    Fast, Fast, Fast!!!!

Look no further for an external drive. Compared to the others brands on the market, this is a bargain. This drive is FAST....and I mean FAST!!

I purchased this for my new 2012 iMac and the sleep/wake functions work great. Comes with a 3 year warranty, LaCie stands behind their product. It works fantastic with time machine.

I was very surprised when I picked-up the box for the first time, it was heavy compared to the others I have owned. The aluminum case is solid and feels like a very well built product.

If your looking for the next generation of affordable external storage (compared to SSD) buy this drive.

    Faint humming noise

I am impressed with this 3T backup system using the TM feature in Mountain Lion.. The back up speed is very fast and smooth.. Other advantage is that it goes asleep with the ML sleep mode. The only issue I had was the faint humming noise coming from the constant disk whirling..Granted the unit was stored on my desk top.. I moved it below the top and now I barely hear it..The old WD system made noise like a rattling street car...

    Mine is very quiet!

As there is no fan inside, the only noise I hear is from the spinning drive, and the head seeking during access.

No whining at all. A fine addition to my desktop.

    Great Thunderbolt HD

This works well as a Time Machine backup disk or as a scratch disk for video editing. The transfer speeds are great. If you want faster read/write times then grab something with flash storage instead, but for the average consumer this should work fine.

I like that it spins down and sleeps when the computer does, and particularly like that it also has a dedicated on/off switch unlike some other drives.

It looks great paired up with an iMac. The d2 line has rock solid performance and reliability and this seems to continue that trend.

Under Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion this thunderbolt device sleeps with the system . Awakens with the system and copy speeds range between 130 megs/sec to 160.

Compared to the Little Big Disk it takes a few seconds to wind up after awake but no big deal. Does not slow the shutdown time of the system.

Only drawback is the one thunderbolt port, so must place at the end of the daisy chain.
