    Fantastic times 3!

    Have had one installed in our weekend home, and recently installed two more in our primary home. Installation is so intuitive, even I can do it in about 10-15 minutes per. I've always turned off the learning/auto-away functions and use it only to adjust when we'll be away, and to turn back on a few hours before we return. Very elegant app, and great looking with any decor. Love the nests.

    Does not work in cold weather

    I have had HVAC technician talk twice with NEST to get it to operate correctly. In single digit weather the system would only blow cold air. Change system back to Honeywell thermostat and house is warm. Also, does not work with changeable fan speed system. I gave it a year to learn but to no avail.

    Great thermostat

    I bought the first Generation and it worked well till they upgaded the software and everything went crazy and I was about to get rid of it because I couldn't find a solution and I notice that most new thermostats require the C wire so I changed the wiring to 5 wire and added the C wire and everything is working great since I made the changes so hopefully this may help other to fix there problems.
    If it wasn't for the problem I had I would of gave it a 5.

    NEST ROCKS !!

    Well if that wasn't the easiest installation I have ever done, even for a woman...lol
    I had it up and running within 20 minutes and it works Excellent so far.
    Every thing is explained to a "T" and pretty much child proof..
    I'm on my way for the first day as to a schedule for my NEST.. will inform you all at a later date.
    VERY HAPPY so far .... I love the fact that you can control your heat from your phone app..
    especially if you have pets! A++

    Does not work!

    After purchasing the Nest thermostat at my local Apple store (along with $2,500 worth of computers), I installed the Nest in my vacation condo so I could turn up the heat before arriving after a prolonged absence. Three days after I left, the wifi quit. On returning to my cold condo, I installed a new router. A few days later over the holidays, the Nest wifi controll quit with a "low battery" warning. (The router is not the problem.) With sub-zero temps outside, the Nest defaults to a dumb thermostat...a very expensive dumb thermostat. At -8 degrees F, can it be trusted to keep the pipes from freezing? Bottom line: easy to install, very pretty, doesn't work. (Apple: warn your customers!)

    Use Your MAIN WiFi Account

    I have been using the NEST 2nd Gen Thermostat for over 10 months now and LOVE IT! It "learns" and can be "programmed" to a set schedule if you want. I have mine set to start warming things up 30 min before my alarm goes off, nice to wake up to a warm house.

    Wi-Fi Heads Up:
    I changed my home Wi-Fi to the new Apple Time Capsule (Tower) about 3 months ago and a little issue showed up.

    When I got the new Time Capsule I set up a "guest" wi-fi account and used that for the NEST, this did not work well. After a while the NEST stopped communicating on-line, turns out the security Apple builds in for a "guest" wi-fi account is actually pretty good and that interfered with the ability for the NEST to do it's thing over an extended period of time. I simply set the NEST up on my MASTER wi-fi account and it has not skipped a beat since (over 2 months now on the new account). Working PERFECT!!

    Being able to control from the app is awesome! If you travel, about an hour before getting home simply switch it to "home" from "auto away" and when you walk in, temp will be perfect!

    Great thermostat!

    After months of struggling with a thermostat that I never seemed to understand, the second generation Nest Learning Thermostat was born, and I bought it!

    I love this thermostat. I've had it for about 6 months now and have no complaints. Install was super easy, connecting was easy too. I love being able to check the temperature from my phone at all times and being able to warm up the house if my day ends early for some reason.

    Auto away is great. Sometimes when I make a quick stop at home I find myself hiding from the thermostat so that it doesn't see me and turn on. (Frequent on and off of HVAC equipment is bad)

    I have had no power issues or errors appear on the nest. I have had few network issues but those fell on the cable company (my laptop and smart tv wouldn't connect either)

    The bottom line is I just wanted a thermostat that I knew how to use so that I would actually use it. I love my Nest.

    Really wanted these to work

    For what it's worth, I'm a software engineer actively working in the "connected devices" world. Point being, I SHOULD have above average technical know-how.

    Summary of installation for TWO thermostats:
    Wiring 20 minutes total - easy
    WiFi config - 40 minutes (really painful - no exaggeration) AND I had to change my router security to mixed mode before it work. I have a 3 year old Cisco router. I've had no problems with any other device in my house and I have probably 12+ "things" connected all of the time.

    Next morning
    - Error displayed on the Nest and my upstairs was at 61 degrees.
    - Nest support ran through some tests and determined my furnace had an issue and I should call my HVAC guy.
    - Just google "N26 No power to G wire detected."
    - This furnace is a heat pump and apparently didn't provide enough power to keep the Nest happy. I replaced my old thermostat and everything was just fine.

    During the next week
    - My Gas force air furnace worked great and the info coming off of the Nest was exactly what I had wanted/expected. ...until it stopped connecting to my WiFi. It was only online for about 5 days total.
    - After a couple of additional attempts I gave up.

    Bottom line: WiFi connectivity is key for this product and both units had general connectivity problems in my house where other devices seem not to. Before installing on a heat bump, do some additional research. You might be better off with a non-programmable anyway.

    Update killed thermostat.

    Newest update causes the battery to run down and shut down. In the cold north east no thermostat is a big concern, but not to Nest. With no battery you can not even manually turn on your heat!!!! Frozen pipes while you are on vaca? Elderly in the house? They claim to have a fix but upon calling they admitted they can't even roll back to a working version.

    Do not buy a Nest

    The Nest is not reliable. We installed ours 2 wks ago and it does not work - we are presently freezing in our home. Yesterday, we came home from work as usual and it was mysteriously in "away" mode. Today, we came home and it had the air conditioner and furnace running at same time. The house was freezing. We turned off the air conditioner at the electrical panel - we tried to do it at the Nest but it did not work, so the only option was to flip the breaker. We then put a thermometer beside the Nest and saw that it reads 8 degrees less than is displayed on the Nest, meaning that the Nest does not properly measure the ambient temp. We went to their website for troubleshooting - it is a useless piece of fluff. We called their 1-800 # and did not get service after almost an hour on hold. So, here we sit, freezing and disappointed, in our house in November! We will return to Honeywell asap. Do not get a Nest!

    Stopped working

    I bought the Nest about 6 months ago and had it professionally installed along with a brand new HVAC system. It worked fine until about a week ago went it got cold outside. The Nest had both the heat and the AC running at the same time. I had to go out and pull the breaker to the AC unit. I had the HVAC company come out today and take a look at it. The confirmed that the nest was sending the signal to the AC unit to turn on. They could not do anything about besides leave the breaker pulled. The other option is to remove the nest and replace with another controller (not a nest). I will now try calling Nest to see what they will do. I am clearly experiencing what is happening to a lot of people. Will be interesting to see how Nest handles it. Makes me mad because I really like the way the nest looked and functioned but clearly this is a huge problem that will most likely have me throwing the nest in the trash.

    Issues with backplates can show up any time

    I purchased my second generation Nest in November 2012. I enjoyed 10 months of efficient use and loved the product, until one night in August while running in cooling mode, it started making a simultaneous call for heat and caused my HVAC system to go completely haywire. Emergency HVAC calls and $700 later it was determined it was determined the Nest had gone bad. At that point Nest didn't tell me about the significant number of issues with backplates that had been cropping up -- I got a replacement that also failed. This time it started running my air conditioning in heating mode when it was 30 degrees out. My third backplate also went bad. The problem seems to stem from Nest's use of FETs which makes it highly intolerant of normal voltage swings found in HVAC units. The nightmare of trying to get Nest to refund my purchase for this sudden incompatibility has been painful -- more than 4 hours of waiting with tech support. The Nest is a great idea, but the company is showing real issues with product quality, reliability and support that needs to be addressed.

    It‘s not compatible with baseboard heaters

    If you have a baseboard heater forget about nest! We couldn't get any technician to install it here in Canada, nobody wanted to do it and they said that we need to convert our system to 24 volts because Nest is designed for 24 volt systems (furnaces type setups).

    One of my two Nest thermostats has suddenly stopped controlling its furnace

    After two months of apparently working as advertised, one of my two Nest thermostats quit controlling its furnace this evening.

    It was set at 18 Celsius, but the furnace just kept running and running: 19 degrees, 20 degrees, 21 degrees, 22 degrees. I could control the thermostat from my iPad and iPhone, but it did not control the furnace. I turned the thermostat completely off, the furnace still kept running.

    No one answering the phones at a Nest support in the middle of the night.

    So I've turned the furnace completely off. At -2 outside, that's not a great plan, but nothing else to do.

    Love the idea, but product is faulty

    Bottom line - great idea, but they just don't work. After spending $200 for an "Authorized NEST Installer" to install them - the installer told me that they have nothing but trouble with these products and they recommend the equivalent honeywell products instead.

    Here is the whole story if you're interested in the details (I am very technically proficient with HVAC systems):


    Bought three of them. Installation was a breeze, and everything was very well thought out and explained. Then....after about 3 weeks.....the NEST's stated that they needed to be charged! Made no sense to me. They reported a VOC input voltage of 5.03 volts, but I measured 24 volts with my voltmeter. Tech support was WAY LESS knowledgeable than I was about the product, so I gave up. Called an "Authorized NEST installer".....who told me to not bother with the NEST - but I don't like to give up that easily. So we checked everything and installed new transformers on the furnaces, etc. THEN - EVERYTHING WORKED! Until 2 days later when the NEST's reported that there was no power to Rc. The "Authorized NEST installer" sighed and then came over again to install a resistor between C and W......which worked! Until 1 more day when the NESTS again reported no voltage at Rh. Again, I confirmed that there was 24v with no problems.

    NEST tech support was very friendly, but I really get the impression that a lot of people are having similar trouble to what I had. Tech support finally recommended that I return the product for a refund. Interestingly, I could hear a lot of the background conversations while on with tech support - and it sounded as if a lot of people are having similar trouble. In a cold country - you CAN'T have a bad thermostat.....these products probably need to be recalled if they don't come up with an appropriate software update for them.

    This is too bad - wonderful idea with a total miss on application. These NEST thermostats should be a case study in an Engineering textbook on how NOT to deliver a product to the consumer.

    Perfect Implementation, Perfect Product

    I recently installed two Nests. I had held off because I was concerned about what I was getting into. Now I am kicking myself for holding off. First, Nest comes with pretty much everything you need (right down to a screwdriver). They even supply little labels for the wires, so that once you remove the old thermostat you will not be confused about which wire goes where. Another nice touch, they supply a backing plate in case the previous thermostat was larger and the wall is in less than perfect condition.

    Install time --> This literally took under 15 minutes. From start to finish. Not an issue at all.

    Using the Nest is a breeze. If you are not technically minded, then you just turn it right to increase the temperature and turn it left to decrease. That's it. That's all you have to do.

    However, if you are technically minded, the Nest will (quite easily, actually) connect to your wireless network. Once connected you can change your temperature settings from anywhere. Leaving on a trip and forgot to set the thermostat accordingly? No problem (more on this later... Auto Away... Awesome). Getting ready to leave the office and you want to make sure the house is the proper temperature when you get home? Piece of cake. My personal favorite: Feeling a little cold while watching TV, but REALLY don't want to get up to fix it? Not an issue, just pick up your smart phone and turn it up a degree or two.

    Humidity control, power saving features like running the fan when heat or AC isn't necessary, polling the predicted weather over the internet to make decisions about how to best cool the house, sun blocker technology so the unit will not freeze you out just because your builder was an idiot and put the thermostat directly in the path of sunlight. These are all things that are built into this product. Finally, Auto-Away. The unit detects when you are away and automatically switches into Away mode, where it will keep the temperature from getting too high or too low, but won't run unless it absolutely needs to. Saving you money. Live in a hot and humid area? It will even adjust the temperature to make sure the humidity doesn't reach the dreaded Mold producing levels.

    This is a perfect product.

    Fantastic

    If it wasn't for the lack of the logo, I'd swear this is an Apple product. It is elegant, thoughtful, and superbly constructed with sturdy materials. The box even has that "new Mac smell," and if you own a Mac, you know what I'm talking about! I've only had it for a week, but so far I'm very impressed. We'll be purchasing another one for our other rooms. The "Father of the iPod" has gone on to do great things!

    Does not alway work

    I bought a Nest and tried to get it to work and could not, I'm a Sys Admin and still had trouble getting it to work, I called Nest and they walked me through some chgs and still would not work, Then found out the adv model of my router would not wk so I bought a diff one and still after my hours of tiring to get to wk no luck, So I bought a 2nd one just to make sure and it would not work, So I took both back to Lowe's and Bought the Hunter Douglas Model and Guess what in 20 min and it as working including on my iPhone DONT BUY THIS NEST

    Thermostat Disconnected

    I purchased a house with 2 Nests. Seemed like a great concept, however the unit's constently disconnect from the App. I'm told it's because they lose power and connectivity is the first function that shuts down. What good is a thermostat that you can control remotely that is only connected 15% of the tiime. Not to mention if you change your schedule for the slightest reason the whole concept of a learning thermostat is in the toilet!. If you work from home Iyou'll need to keep telling the unit that "I'm working in the office, stop setting the system to away!!" The only benefit I have gotten is the abitlity to set the system to away when I'm out of town. That is, if it's connected. Check back enough times and I might catch it connected.

    Stay with traditional Programmables!

    In theory a great thermostat... that is IF YOU are a predictable person / family. As a retired construction / remodeling business owner, including HVAC, I would NEVER put one in a customer's home WITHOUT advising them of the potential problems with this "engineering marvel". AGAIN, IF you have a VERY regular AND predictable lifestyle, maybe an OK choice, but at the retail price (what the homeowner is charged by most contractors), I'd NOT recommend it! PERIOD! My business operated / grew on by-name-referral BECAUSE the products I installed were top-notch as was our craftsmanship -- "Old Worlde". W e did NOT do bandaid fixes NOR install junk! This item may not be junk, BUT it'll have you wanting to rip it off the wall and throw it out the window or in the fireplace... when you wake up at 3 AM sweating because the STUPID thing has decided no one is home! OR, you'll come home having set it back BEFORE you left for the week... only to come back to find it "had a mind of its own" AND turned the house into a meat locker when no one was home!!! Neither of my HVAC systems have one!!!! As I said, in theory (and design) may be an OK idea, BUT has far too many shortcomings -- PROBLEMS -- to be used in my high-end business. AND by "high-end", I mean QUALITY, NOT ridiculously expensive!!!! Stay with traditional Programmables! They're more dependable & trustworthy, like the KC-135s I flew, that are still in the air, while KC-10s may soon be history (retired USAF)
