    Great Design, horrible product with major issues

    The Nest has the beauty of Apple design but poor quality product

    The product installs easily and support is good

    After running fine for a couple months I came home to both my furnace and air conditioner running at the same time. This was for three days and house was 90 degrees. The energy costs alone are greater than any potential savings. The danger factor alone for this known problem is high and I can't believe they don't recall the product.

    I received no alerts or anything on the iphone app. It only pretends to be intelligent for minor features. It is has little intelligence for reliably heating and cooling your house which is the main job.

    I went back to a $25 Honeywell thermostat from Home Depot and everything is fine. Nest will replace unit but how could you trust the device.

    Can't hold comfortable setting

    It looks good and the remote interface isn't bad but, but it allows the temperature to swing almost 2 degrees in either direction of the set temperature. This leaves you feeling too hot or too cold most of the time. It also make the set and forget ability of a programmable thermostat useless because you have to constantly adjust it. Going back to my ugly, no remote interface Honeywell.

    Monitored My Home From 1,800 Miles Away

    Spent the winter in Arizona and monitored my home's temperature in Carman, MB via iPhone, iPad and a PC. Great! Still can't believe they haven't built in a notice system that would send an email if furnace fails to start on demand and temperature drops. Given that one's login credentials include the email address, it seems like the infrastructure is all there. Someone just needs to activate it.

    Motherboard Chatter Causes Problems

    We own a three-year-old York furnace. I installed the Nest thermostat before winter. Throughout the winter we had several problems with the furnace – we had to replace the motherboard twice, fan and other repairs. The technician finally diagnosed that the Nest kept making calls to the furnace turning it on and off (chatter). We have since replaced the Nest with a regular thermostat and have experienced no problems. This was a very expensive experiment. Cool product, but does not appear to be ready for mainstream …

    If you do the research and install correctly, it works!!

    We were looking to upgrade our current thermostat and found the Nest. we did the research before hand -- took a picture of our existing wiring set up, sent to Nest, and they replied our system was compatible.

    bought off Amazon, arrived two days later. got the box, read the instructions to include the install picture we got from Nest earlier. Took less then 10 mins to install. One thing, once you get it powered and working, it automatically starts to look for updates. don't worry if you don't get the splash intro screen right off. its installing most recent software. a green light will blink at the top of the unit and a "house" icon will be on the screen. be patient (15 mins or so) as it updates.

    one updated, it goes to work learning your schedule!

    I truly believe most of the 1 star ratings installed this sucker on existing systems it is not compatible with -- and they did not do the research to find out before they bought it. we have now had it for one month, not one issue. looks great, has internet connection to an app, and functions as advertised. highly recommended!

    Immediate money saving product

    As soon as we installed this product in our home, we saw our bill start to drop. It is very easy to configure and schedule and it also learns on its own so if you forget to tell it that you are away at work, it will set itself to away for you.

    Love this!

    I installed the nest myself and had no problems. Our home is fairly new so all of the wires were the right ones. I had a few questions and the Nest customer service was great! I love being able to control our thermostat when I am not at home. We aren't going to use the setting where it learns our home and away from home pattern because we have crazy schedules and its never the same.

    NEST is Awesome

    I just installed my Nest and I must say I love it. There is no lag in turning on my HVAC system I just dial the temp and the HVAC system is instant on. I bought one to try it out and I absolutely will purchase another. Just a tip when reading these reviews, the one star ratings are from home installers who didn't research their problems or install the NEST correctly. The NEST is NOT an iPhone, it gets power from the HVAC system so you don't need to charge the batteries (Clue one). The battery issue and voltage problems are because it isn't installed correctly (Clue 2). Your HVAC system has an Rc and Rh wire with is Hot (heat) and Hot (cold) in MOST system the Nest can use this for power, but SOME require a common wire (C) which these people obviously didn't install (Clue 3). What happens is exactly what these people describe the NEST works great for a few months and then dies. This is because it has a battery backup to keep its settings during power outages (Clue 4). No I don't work for Nest, I just feel its not right to rip apart a product because someone did a self install incorrectly. Also, I wanted to add this because these misleading reviews almost made me not purchase this unit so do your research and you will see these people didn't install it correctly. Anyway this thing is awesome and I love....

    I have to say, pleasantly surprised all the way around.. easy install, has performed over the past 6 month (almost) flawlessly. I say almost, only because it dropped wifi i think 1 time... but seriously, I couldn't be happier... You will enjoy, without doubt!

    good looking terrible product, made electric bill double~

    I have tried and tried to get this great looking thing to work, but alas we are putting the old thermostat back on. Frustration, every month with our heating bill out of control, and never able to really regulate the temperature in the house to a comfortable temp. Either freezing or burning up. Randomly turns off after it's turned on for 30 seconds and then comes back on for 5 and then turns off again! Don't waste your hard earned money because it looks so cool! Looks are deceiving.

    I really wanted to love it

    I wanted to love it but I love being comfortable in my home more. I purchased 2 second gen Nests for my home and immediately I noticed that the batteries drained, they lost wifi, and then shut down. Several times I came home to a freezing home and had to light the fireplace while I manually charged the Nest with the mini USB. No help from Nest support and finally I had to replace them with the old simple programmable thermostats ($19.99 at Home Depot) - problem solved! Waste of $500.

    Reading the forums and comments lets me know I'm not alone.

    Check the type of system you have before buying

    I am the owner of a 1st generation Nest Thermostat. It worked amazing with my old single stage mid-efficiency furnace. The furnace quit last week and I replaced my furnace with a 95 percent high-efficiency furnace with a dual staged fan. Nest thermostats (1st & 2nd generation are not compatible with furnaces with multiple stage fans - as per Nest Technical Support. I had to revert to using my old programmable thermostat and I am now the owner of a $250 hockey puck.

    Has Potential. Needs A lot of Work

    I did my research and decided I would try the Nest. I previously used an Ecobee in my last home and loved it, the idea of the Nest using software and algorithms to "Learn" and automatically set to away to save energy seemed amazing. I do not however have a set schedule and after 2 months it is still in learning mode. My girlfriend and I both have the Nest apps on our iPhone, Perhaps if it were to use location to know when we left the house, and when we are going to return... it could help but to my knowledge does not. There have been times when I am in another room and it sets to "auto away" increasing the temperature and making it very uncomfortable. Other times in the middle of the night I will wake up sweating, realizing the Nest decided to raise the temperature 5+ degrees. Aside from that... installation was extremely easy, it looks very nice on my wall, and needs a lot of work from the Nest team.

    Frozen Pipes

    Before starting this review, let me state my credentials. I am a Physics Ph. D, with over 20 years experience in test and measurement, and I also have an electrical engineering degree, dozens of technical publications on testing and simulation algorithms, in addition to law school and being CTO of a tech company. If I have trouble getting this device to be reliable, I'm going to make the claim the device is not reliable.

    I used a Nest thermostat for about 4 months before it failed, causing the pipes in my home to freeze and rupture. The issue is apparently related to the inability of the battery to remain charged when the weather is cold and the thermostat needs to signal the heat to run for long periods of time. There is no fail safe mechanism built into the thermostat makes the device function in a safety mode when the controller dies from the dead battery. I bought a gen II device with some version 3.5 something of the ROM. It had upgraded to version 4.0.1 without my consent when problems began to happen. I was away traveling one day when I noticed the battery was creeping downwards, and there was absolutely nothing I could do remotely to turn the heat on. It eventually went offline for a few days, and then magically reappeared a week later, running the heat for 48 hours to heat the home to the scheduled temperature. What was interesting to me before the failure was in spite of the fact the battery had enough charge, I still could not get the Nest to turn on the heat. After a day the battery died, and I lost contact. I was fortunate to have turned off the water at the home before leaving, but of course it is always impossible to drain the water meter, and the meter froze and ruptured. When the heat resumed by itself without me being there, the basement became wet. Very scary!

    My opinion is this s a great concept, but rushed execution resulting in a device that is not tested in all possible real world situations. It is not a good thermostat to use in environments where it is either so cold or so hot that failure is not acceptable. If you have winters where the temperature falls in the -20 C or cooler range for extended periods of time, do not use a Nest. Buy something with 120 years of proven reliability, like an electromechanical round Honeywell thermostat. It will save you a lot of headaches and cash. If you want to monitor your home temperature remotely, learn to use an arduino and temperature sensors. It will be safer.

    I think Nest ought to start worrying about a class action. I have heard several similar complaints. They might consider proactively addressing this problem.

    Heat bill doubled

    Swapped an old digital basic thermo for the Nest in Dec of 13. The aesthetic quality of the Nest had me hooked. I had a professional come by afterwards to check it out because the house was taking forever to heat. He said it was installed properly, just a Nest trait. It kicks on the first stage of heat and runs as much as it can with out utilizing the 2nd stage which really heats the house up quickly. My 1st stage of heat was running constantly. Well, it's been 3 months and average temps were with in a degree of the same time last year and my electric bills have doubled each month compared to last year.
    I requested support from Nest 2 months ago and have received no replies. My Nest is going back for an exchange to something more affordable that works.

    Not as good

    I purchased Nest, after couple month of on and off working out the way it works, it was working fine, until and in a cold night of January, the house was very cold, come to find out that the thermostat is completely dead and without any warning, lucky enough I have kept my old thermostat, I changed the thermostat back to the old one. after checking the Nest thermostat, the battery was completely drained, and needed to be charged.
    if it works like it should, its a good thermostat, but when the problem is in the source of this thermostat, lots of glitches needed to be workout.
    I don't advice anyone to purchase this thermostat, and if you do, keep your old one handy because you going to need it.
