    Don't buy!

    I owned it for a year and a half without issues. After automatic update on the thermostat, battery gets drained which results in your hvac shutting down. In Canada, it's not a good thing when you have kids and outside temperature is -20 Celsius...
    I contacted Nest who could not troubleshoot and solve the problem . They sent replacement unit for free but had same battery issue. There was no work done on furnace or change on internet router, problem was clearly with the product software update. Save your money and buy product that does not look as nice but WORKS, AND IT IS NOT THE NEST.

    Neat when working...until it doesn't - caution!

    1-year after install the Nest failed.

    Came home on a freezing day to the Air Conditioner being told to run by the thermostat. The Nest could not shut the unit down - on/off = no change - had to turn off the circuit breaker. Their technical support confirmed the base plate had failed and they sent out a new one. The new base plate fixed the issue. Research shows I'm not the only one with this issue.

    This kind of failure can damage property since I live in a state with climate extremes. It's not worth the risk and I'll be getting rid of it.

    Nest learning thermostat

    Don't bother it's a waste of time it continues to go off line and I cannot run the programs I set
    I believe Honeywell has a better system with half the price

    horrific technical support, and always offline

    I can't believe how lousy this is, and they have no support, I can't get human on the line, i have no AC and live in FLORIDA, I had to change it back to the old thermostat for the AC to work.
    Its great when it works but down 3 times in 6 months!!!! BRUTAL!!.
    I never had a single issue with my old thermostat in MY LIFE.

    Very Dissapointed

    The Nest is a real disappointment to us. It simply tries to be too smart and generally gets everything wrong. The advanced functions like "scheduling" and "away from home" never get it right and it is essentially impossible to just set a temperature have the Nest leave it alone. This company obviously has too many computer programmers and not enough human beings. It certainly does not deserve customers. Awful product.

    Love it!

    I have the Nest Thermostat and five of the 120v Nest Protects installed in my three story townhome. All installed easily and have been working flawlessly. I really like the quality of these products, which make their competitors feel cheap by comparison. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend both the Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect.

    Unstable

    I normally don't write reviews but this product is so unstable it desires one. After owning my device now for over a year, I can tell you that my device is rarely online, Nest customer support is not helpful and my hydro/heating bills have actually increased from using this product.

    Works well when it does not go offline!

    The Nest works well except that it continues to go offline and then you are unable to control it remotely! This is rather annoying and Nest has done nothing to resolve this problem although there is an enitre thread about this on the Nest forum therefore I am not the only person experiencing this problem,

    Don't bother with this product

    The good things - nice design, looks cool, easy to use, common sense user interface.

    Now for the bad things. It does not work! Nest has replaced my thermostat one time. The issues are with its ability to be a smart thermostat. It is not. The away function does not work. While Nest will tell you the software only kicks in during the daytime hours, it decides if you are away at all hours of the day or night. For example, at 6PM, it decides that I am away even though it turned on when I came home. It will also go into away mode every hour or so during the evening. So, if you change the temp at 8PM, by 8:30 it will reset to the temp for away mode. And, every morning when you wake it is in away mode.

    To solve that, I decided to use the "schedule" mode. That does not work either. If you only set a single temp and never touch it again, it works fine. If, however, you ever push the temp up or down slightly, it remembers that and constantly resets itself to the new temp. I can't recall the number of times it resets to 65 in the AM, or resets at other times on its own. It takes several times of over riding the temp to get it to reschedule the right temp.

    Quite simply, this smart thermostat is stupid. I would avoid all their products. While the shifting temp is an inconvenience, I would not trust their smoke or CO detectors.

    DON'T BOTHER WITH NEST

    The Nest thermostat looks sleek. Unfortunately it doesn't do what it should. After about 8 calls to Nest (always very pleasant advisers), my thermostat still goes "Offline" without explanation. This means that I cannot control the temperature remotely, which is the whole point of the thing. Save your money and by a much cheaper one at Home Depot.

    Once a avid backer of Nest. Might be again, if.....

    Had a GEN1 Nest. It did not want to switch to heat in the winter. No problem. Gave it to a friend who loves it. Purchased a GEN2. Wonderful. Does everything I want until now. Not heating properly because ambient temperature states 75 degrees F. Removed Nest module and felt back plate. Warm. Looks like Y1 FET blown. When I removed Y1 wire, FET cooled down. It is less the 20 degrees F here in Minnesota. So my thermostat was running the heat and also trying to activate the A/C. Fortunately at the end of the cooling season, I had removed power from the A/C.
    Now as a test engineer with almost 30 years of experience and also with an engineering physics background I know my way around circuits.
    Nest has a very serious issue with how they dealt with the 24VAC input power. Their circuit is not fault tolerant for the fact that the 24VAC is unregulated and can vary quite a bit depending on input voltage and load conditions. The 24VAC technology was designed when the world was analog and the voltage was used to switch mechanical relays. Nest needs a solution that protects their wonderful implementation. Isolation, solid state relays, an actual power control/condition/switcher. Pick one. Looks like a group of digital engineers approaching problem from digital side with little experience with analog and HVAC. Their competitor is approaching the market from the HVAC side with not as much talent in the digital side.
    Will invest in Nest when they get their power supply situation worked out. This is not a compatibility issue as 24VAC transformers exist on most furnaces. If you do not think you have power spikes, the only way to be certain is to have some type of power conditioning and/or surge protection at the 110V input to the furnace.

    Awful for Vacation Home

    Though this thermostat is very cool looking, and the learning feature interesting, it lacks two basic feature that make it terrible for a vacation home.
    First, it does not have a low temperature alert that emails you when the temperature drops below a certain level. This would give you a chance to try to get ahead of freezing pipes.
    Second there is no temperature hold feature. Sometimes I want to just set a temperature and leave it there... The most basic of functions.
    People have been complaining about these issues for the past couple of years on the Nest boards and the complaints are falling on deaf ears.
    Going to try to sell my 2 nests and get Honeywells.

    Nest is UNRELIABLE

    STAY AWAY from this product if you intend to use in a weekend house, or any home that isn't occupied everyday. IT is unreliable. The battery keeps going dead. The patches they've sent to fix are worthless. do NOT buy this product. It is TOO unreliable.

    You have been warned

    Went through multiple emails making sure NEST was compatible with my heating system. Had the NEST professionally installed. On the 2nd day it just started blowing cold air. It is 40 degrees outside now and 42 degrees inside and I have to have the old system installed back on. Horrible gimmicky gadget here.

    Very Happy; Meets my expectation.

    I've been using the Nest for about 6 months now and I am very happy with it. I was hesitant at first hearing all the horror stories with the Nest messing with their furnace's motherboard and what not but I can say I have not had that issue at all. I've already used it during the cold and warm months and everything has worked perfectly.

    For those wondering, I am NOT using the Common wire in my set up.

    I think the most handy feature about this is that I can set my temperature from anywhere with my phone. I also like to see what the humidity level is on my home since I have hardwood floors.

    What I don't like (right now) is the Nest tries to be too clever. It uses it's motion detector to determine whether it should keep the heat on or off and it'll try to build you a schedule based on your usage pattern. While this sounds good in theory it doesn't work if your thermostat is in a low traffic area of the house. Also, once it builds you a schedule, you really have no idea it did until you notice your temperature setting keeps fluctuating, or in my case, the wife complains why the temperature was X and now it's Y. Hopefully, it's "smartness" will get more advance as it integrates with other devices in your home, i.e. Dropcam.

    Not sure why all the bad reviews, so far this thing is amazing and works!

    I researched this and other smart thermostats for about a year and read review after review after review. Like you reading this now I was hesitant and heard the horror stories of pipes freezing and this thing being buggy. However I decided after all the mixed reviews to take the plunge. I live in a single family home in New England with one thermostat for the entire home and this took exactly 10 minutes to install. It fit nicely into the area that held my older digital thermostat and I added the base plate and connect the two wires and presto this thing was up and running. Now so far it is October and the weather is not freezing cold yet and this thing is trying to learn my habits etc, however I set up a schedule anyway but not sure I will need it. The ease of use for this device was unreal and I can see why so many people like it. It even looks awesome on the wall and I processed a $100 credit from the electric company as a rebate which helped to offset the cost.

    What I do like so far is the iPhone app and the website which make this so easy to use and set up anyone could do it. Even the most complicated systems seem like they would be a snap. I will keep a watch on this as the weather gets colder to see how it works and hopefully I have no issues. I would recommend this at this point to anyone since digital thermostats are a thing of the past and I cannot see Honeywell catching up to this anytime soon. Take the plunge, go buy one! I may get the Nest protect but so far that looks full of bugs.

    Nest, Not what us used to be...

    I purchased my Nest 1st generation 5 years ago, and it 'was' a phenomenal piece of equipment. It managed my heat pump, heating and cooling requirements better than my old mercury driven thermostat... The Nest DID save me money on my electric bill. However, Nest must have recently had an update to their device which I'm finding 'I cannot manage my FAN air function.' During the daylight hours when my system is demanding AC, Nest operates as it should by providing AC. In the evenings when it's too cool for AC and still too warm for HEAT, my FAN does not turn off... It constantly runs even after I manually command Nest to 'OFF.' I find I need to manually turn the AC, HEAT PUMP unit to OFF to force the fan yo stop operating. Hence, I'm no longer saving money on electric/heating bill. Note: For some strange reason, this issue is only a problem during the evening hours. I'm considering removing my Nest and replacing it with one b their competitors.

    AVOID NEST; Coolest look; Inferior functionality

    This is a very cool looking, poorly designed thermostat.

    If you are looking for a thermo that is easy to use this is NOT it.

    1. There is no on-off switch; that's basic. I want to turn the effing system off. There is no simple, obvious way to do that. I want to turn the effing fan off. There is no simple, obvious way to do that.
    2. No tech support, except FAQs and the "community." Clearly cheap for apple. Clearly inadequate for a consumer.
    3. Navigating the system is cumbersome, limited, sequential screens.

    Do yourself a favor: Get a Honeywell or some other brand that does not look so cool but that has a good display and can be easily used.

    Artistic physical Design but has technical issues

    The Nest learning thermostat is very attractive when installed on your wall. It is easy to install and the instructions are very clear and quite simple.to follow. I took me about 20 minutes to complete the installation and have my system running. As advertised it will learn your schedule automatically or you can program it manually. You can adjust it remotely using your iPhone app or from any pc or apple computer after you download the software from Nest.
    The bad news is that even though it is advertised as a thermostat which is supposed to control the temperature, it is absolutely terrible at doing this. For example in the COOL mode I set the temperature to 76 degrees. The room temperature has to rise until almost 78 before the thermostat switches on the cooling equipment and then fall to almost 74 degrees to turn it off. This huge 4 degree "dead band" does not provide a comfortable living space since you go from warm to "freezing" rather than a comfortable 0.5 degree differential. This also increases energy usage. Contacting Nest only confirmed that this is the way the thermostat was designed to operate. Very poor answer and I have since replaced Nest with another manufacturer's model which operates to my liking, I do not recommend this product.
