    Great Solid Product

    • Written by from Plymouth

Been using the Nest thermostat and Nest Protect's for a few years and no huge complaints. I've never had any significant issues with the thermostat except for a few software issues that were quickly remedied by updates. Im not sure what issues the other reviewers have had with significant temp drops, since its set up with auto temps and a safety feature that will turn the heat on if it gets under a certain temp. I had the 'Offline' issue but that was fixed with some network troubleshooting. I can definitely see how it saves me money on oil as we've used much less oil in the past two years having the Nest. My only complaint is the difficulty getting support on their website. Since theres no live support or email support, you have to call them, which when I work during the day of their support hours, It can make it difficult. But as far as the hardware itself, its fantastic. Has more than paid for itself.

Holy smokes what is with this product?

    • Written by from Sherwood Park

we bought this thermostat to save a bit of energy but come on! You can't control the temperature, it seems to do its own thing and won't let you override it. I woke up to a house in Canada in the dead of winter at 16 Celsius! My dog was about ready to pack his bags and leave it was so cold! Listen in theory this product is amazing but it's not a good product, I'd worry leaving this guy on when I was on holidays! It randomly turns my furnace on and off and it's not efficient in the least. Stay away until they work out the bugs!

    Not so smart afterall

    • Written by from Athy

    Will keep this short -

Despite having two units replaced and testing with 8 (yes 8) routers these thermostats hate to stay online. They constantly loose their connection to WiFi and cannot be controlled remotely.

NEST support state that its a known issue etc etc but no fix.

    Advise. Dont buy

Looks awesome. Worked Great for 3 months. Then Epic Failure.

    • Written by from Arlington Heights

After 3 months of impressive performance, my family went away on a three day vacation. On the way back and about an hour away from returning home, we tried to turn the heat up so we could arrive to a warm home. The setting was on "away." When we tried to turn the heat up, we got a message saying that the last time the unit was "on line" was two days ago. We were disappointed that we could not warm up the house but that was the least our problems. After assuring my wife that the Nest would just maintain the preset "Away" temperature, we were shocked to arrive at a house that was 43 degrees F ! The weekend had been cold. It never got above 20 degrees and the over night temperatures were in the single digits...I have a separate thermometer in the house that records low and hi temps as well as the current temp and I confirmed the house had gotten as cold as 34 degrees! Half of our houseplants looked dead and our upstairs bathroom had frozen pipes! Nest support was responsive once the 20 minute wait to get to a live person was experienced. After several trouble shooting recommendations, we were able to get our heat working by tricking the Nest into believing the AC was the heat source. So the problem was our base. Nest promised to send us a new one immediately but seriously, this product, while nearly there in terms of functionality, design, and ease of use; is not ready for prime time. A device this importance needs redundancy protections built in. IT CANNOT change settings preset by the owner. END OF STORY. No excuses please. Make a device more reliable, not less reliable, that the unit being replaced. It took more than 12 hours to heat our home back to a normal temperature. Imagine if we had been gone for a week or more???? This was a horrible experience I don't wish on anyone. I reinstalled the old thermostat. Bummer but at least it works.

    Do NOT buy!

    • Written by from Washington

Thermostat worked fine for about a year, then disaster. It started turning the heating on and off repeatedly. All attempts to troubleshoot through the web site were useless and eventually escalated into a trouble report submission. Their support process is really broken. You must deal with an especially annoying voice menu which, of course, puts you on terminal hold.
Save your money and stick with an "old fashioned" thermostat -- having given up on Nest/Google I'm reinstalling my ancient Honeywell (which actually is dependable, unlike Nest).

Big Brother has Control of your THermostat

    • Written by from Holyoke

I hope you correctly interpret the one star above as a negative assessment. I was forced to click on at least one start before I coudl submit my review. Too bad we could not depict negative stars.
The NEST product was an interesting and fun gadget for a year and a half ... until control of it was taken away by someone during one of the coldest days of the year. As the house got colder and colder I worked through the NEST website looking for tech support to no avail. Finally Googling "NEST help" got me a contact number. During three hours of troubleshooting I found out that this thermostat was part of an energy savings program. NEST thought the thermostat was controlled by my local utility. I contract my local utility and they had no idea what I was talking about. I then went back to NEST and they still had no idea who was controlling the thermostat or how low the "Controller" whoever that was would let the temp fall. I worked with them a little longer in an attempt to opt out of this energy saving program and after three hours I told them thank you very much, but your time is up. I then replaced this thermostat with a conventional programmable thermostat. The NEST product is not ready for prime time.

    Simply Horrible

    • Written by from Greenwich

I have been using eight Nest thermostats in my vacation home for quite awhile. They worked great when first installed. Then Google takes them over and the product is a brick. Goes offline constantly. Simply unacceptable. I use numerous Ecobee3 thermostats in my primary residence. They work flawlessly. Although a major economic hit, I am switching all my Nests to Ecobee3s.

    Over priced and frustrating

    • Written by from TAMPA

I have had a nest thermostat for over a year. While it was easy to set up initially I feel this thermostat has given me more frustration than convenience. From day one the mechanism has never turned fluidly, seated properly against the base, or clicked properly when pressed but I could overlook all of these issues if it weren't for so many other shortcomings.

As others have mentioned there is no temperature hold button to override the auto schedule… This is particularly frustrating when you are home on vacation and have to continually readjust the thermostat after the schedule has changed it.

One of the more shocking design flaws of this thermostat is that the act of touching it alters it's temperature reading. There is a MAJOR design issue where touching the outside ring and turning the selector affects the temperature sensor causing the indicated temperature to increase beyond the actual ambient temperature. FAIL

Another prevalent issue has been that the thermostat will lose connection (go offline) and be unreachable from a mobile device. This is particularly frustrating when you combine it with the above design flaw of touching the thermostat, LOL.

In closing, I cannot recommend that anyone purchase this thermostat considering the cost and poor design quality. It simply has too many design issues to be a true competitor in this market.

    Worst Thermostat EVER!

    • Written by from BUFFALO

I can't even begin to say how upset I am to have to title the Nest Learning Thermostat as "The Worst Thermostat EVER." For the "cool" factor and appearance it was in "A" in my book. I installed it in November 2014 and it worked like a charm... for 4 weeks. The we came home to a house that was 80+ degrees in winter (in Buffalo no less) and found "the base unit was malfunctioning" preventing the nest from shutting off. The "overnight" Fed-Ex replacement arrived in 2 days which meant I had to manually turn on and off the furnace from the circuit breaker. The new nest worked great... for 3 weeks before it did the same thing. Another call to nest with their crazy long wait customer service stated this was a known issue and another unit would be sent... "overnight." Four (4) days later FedEx showed with my third unit in the same number of months and it worked again...well. Yesterday, after only 2 1/2 weeks from install, the Nest again malfunctioned and my phone call to their customer support agent and "senior" agent finally concluded my energy effecient Heil forced air gas furnace was "incompatable" to the nest. What?!?!? I have finally had it and went straight to Home Depot and purchased a Honeywell "Smart Thermostat as a replacement. My last honeywell thermostat lasted over 20 years and I'm just hopeful this one will last longer then the Nest's.

So...divert your eyes from the aestetic appeal of the Nest Thermostat and purchase another brand. Maybe in the future the Nest will be viable, but until that day you owe it to your home to find another thermostat.

    Do NOT buy

    • Written by from Calgary

We have had two Nests for a year in our new home. They worked fine until November when our main floor Nest started reading incorrect temperatures and blowing cold air whenever the incorrect temperature was higher than the set temp. This Nest was replaced by the company. Now in January in often freezing Alberta our upper floor Nest is doing the exact same thing. I called Nest and they are sending a replacement. To my horror, I was shovelling snow outside yesterday when I walked by my two AC units and saw the upstairs unit was actually running. This now made sense why it was freezing in my house. The problem is, we did not have the AC connected to the Nest for winter, I quickly shut the entire thermostat off and the AC was still running!!!!!! How can this be? I know it is a Nest issue as this happened to both my furnaces within a month of each other. All of this happened after the software update in November.

We will be at the hardware store today buying two Honeywell units. I really wanted this Nest to work as the concept is fantastic and it also looks amazing in my modern home but holy smokes, this is crazy town. Come on Google, you are going to be seeing legal ramifications if you can't get this fixed fast. I will be getting my furnace and AC units checked to see if any damage has ensued.

    Always "OFFLINE"

    • Written by from Sacramento

Don't buy the Nest Thermastat if you think you might be using it as a remote device from your smart phone; trust me the Nest does not work remotely haft the time. It's alway "OFFLINE". There is a serious bug in the system and the developer has not addressed the problem.

Nest is wonderful in every way!

    • Written by from Norcross

I have had the Nest Thermostat for over a year and it has reduced my energy bills in both summer and winter by at least 30% and most of the time much more than that. It is just GREAT! It has set itself and I do nothing any more. If you don't like it, it is because you don't understand it. It's just a great product.

WENT DOWN HILL FAST!! DONT BUY!!!

    • Written by from Covington

Have had the Nest 2nd Gen since the release date and WAS absolutely amazing. App worked great never and problems. Unit was easy to hook up and is great. Heat is set to 70 the heat will kick on at 69 and shut off when it hits 71, so it's not constantly turning on. You can fine tune the temp to around quarter/ halfs without it saying 70.5 or 70.25. It was great!!!! Amazing!! Best thermostate ever!!!
THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPEND, TERMASTATE APP WORKED ONLY A QUARTER OF THE TIME. EITHER WOULD SAY OFFLINE OR YOU WOULD CHANGE THE TEMP, CLOSE THE APP THINKING YOU CHANGED IT AND IT DOESNT CHANGE IT. EXTREMLY FUSTRATING BECAUSE I USE THIS DURING WINTER TIME TO FINE TUNE TEMP UPSTAIRS SO MY TODDLERS DONT OVER HEAT OR FREEZE WHILE IAM UPSAIRS AND I DONT NOITICE IT DIDNT CHANGE UNTILL MY BABY MONITOR ALARM GOES OFF BECAUSE ITS TOO HOT AND I HAVE TO RUSH DOWNSTAIRS TURN IT OFF (HAVE TO TURN THE NEST DAIL AND IT CLICKS BUT DOES NOT REACT UNTILL 10 SEC OF TURNING THE DAIL) THEN GO AND OPEN THERE DOORS TO LET OUT HOT AIR. ALSO UNIT SHOULD TURN ON AND DOES NOT AND I TURN THE DAIL TO GET IT TO SHOW TEMP AND TURN ON AND CLICKS BUT DOES NOT REACT UNTILL 10 SEC LATER AND IT JUMPS 10-20 DEG TO THE SET TEMP. ITS LIKE ITS ON SLEEP MODE OR ITS ALWAYS DOWMLOADING OR UPLOADING AND TURNING THE NEST OFF UNTILL YOU FORCE IT TO TURN ON.
1 YEAR AGO I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU BEST TERM EVER AND HAVE TOLD FRIENDS THAT ASKED, NOW I WOULD SAY ONE OF THE WORST TERM EVER. SEEMS LIKE AFTER GOOGLE BOUGHT NEST ITS WENT DOWN HILL FAST. IAM REPLACING MINE SOON AND WILL NEVER GO BACK TO NEST, TOO BAD TOO. WAS GOING TO GET A HAND FULLY OF NEST PROTECTS AND AN UPSTAIRS TERM AND DROP CAMS. NO WAY I WOULD EVEN CONSIDER IT, EVEN IF IT WAS ALL FREE!! I AM NOT EVEN GOING TO SELL MY NEST, I COULDNT DO THAT TO ANYONE. IAM GOING TO TAKE A SLEDGE HAMMER TO IT.
BY THE WAY HAVE LEFT REVIEWS AND ASKED TO BE CONTACT ABOUT THIS MANY TIMES AND STILL NO CONTACTS OR FIXES. AS I SEE BY OTHER REVIEWS ITS NOT JUST A ISOLATED THING.

    NEST is still a baby

    • Written by from San Francisco

It's hard I know, but control that excitement and don't buy nest yet. I wanted to love it, and still do want to. However after purchasing and having loads of independent problems, I see a LOT of dissatisfied customers with similar issues and worse. What's more, is their support team is always overloaded, and the replies on Nest.com are totally canned responses. Hold off until there's more competition!

AMAZING PRODUCT THAT HAS GONE DOWNHILL IN 7 MONTHS

    • Written by from SODDY DAISY

I have been a NEST devotee for 3 yrs. We have 2 installed and they worked with amazing performance until about 7 months ago when software upgrades began. Now the app shows OFFLINE randomly, the thermostat is connected through my Airport (all my WIFI stuff is Apple and nearly new) so I have no remote control. Then I have to touch the dial to get it to connect thru the app. What are they thinking?? NEST support has become a little more responsive in the last month, but even after warranty replacements, the two new units act the same. APPLE--you need to pull this product from your stores until NEST PROVES they have fixed these issues. There are HUNDREDS of threads on the NEST community forum, on these reviews, and on public blogs about this horrendous issue. There is no recourse here but to strangle their business. These problems will occur to every one who buys these, it is just a matter of time. Please pull this product until they get this fixed!

Great device! Love controls and features

    • Written by from Madras

    I highly recommend this device.

Makes it easy to setup your own heat AND cooling schedule -- which can be done from your own computer, making it very easy.

The install process was simple and straight-forward, but it did take two tries for the Nest device to register itself with the manufacturer-so if it fails once, just try it again.

I've had it running for two weeks now, and just received the first monthly report, where it tells you how much time it spent doing heat and cooling and if your energy provider supports the functionality, the Nest device will provide specifics on energy usage.

The ability to turn the heat up, before leaving the office, or turn it down away from home when I forget is great, and I'm looking forward to getting more home appliances that will work with the Nest to make my family more safe while reducing costs.

    Don't buy!

    • Written by from Toronto

I owned it for a year and a half without issues. After automatic update on the thermostat, battery gets drained which results in your hvac shutting down. In Canada, it's not a good thing when you have kids and outside temperature is -20 Celsius...
I contacted Nest who could not troubleshoot and solve the problem . They sent replacement unit for free but had same battery issue. There was no work done on furnace or change on internet router, problem was clearly with the product software update. Save your money and buy product that does not look as nice but WORKS, AND IT IS NOT THE NEST.

    Neat when working...until it doesn't - caution!

    • Written by from Bloomington

1-year after install the Nest failed.

Came home on a freezing day to the Air Conditioner being told to run by the thermostat. The Nest could not shut the unit down - on/off = no change - had to turn off the circuit breaker. Their technical support confirmed the base plate had failed and they sent out a new one. The new base plate fixed the issue. Research shows I'm not the only one with this issue.

This kind of failure can damage property since I live in a state with climate extremes. It's not worth the risk and I'll be getting rid of it.
