    Offline Daily

    • Written by from SAN PEDRO

My Gen 1 Nest worked like a champ. My Gen 2 Nest is offline more than it's online. It's at the point that the only reliable way to control it is manually. The pretty much negates the reason for owning it. Nest customer service is polite, in fact I've never felt better while being blamed for a problem. My Nest Protect seems to work just fine so it can't be my wireless network, a fact that seems beyond the comprehension of the tech reps I've spoken to.

Definitely looking into alternatives at this point. I'm rating it two stars only because it looks neat.

I have had this thermostat for over one year. Nest has replaced it once but still a problem going offline. Every wi-fi device I have stays on line but the nest stays off line a good part of the time. it is a real problem when I am out of town and need to turn it on when I get home.. I would shop around !

Great product, but don't upgrade yet, especially if you live in the South

    • Written by from SLIDELL

Have had my nest almost a year. Installed it the end of last summer. Love all its features except 2:

The first is the way it plugs into the wall. It is very easy for family members to knock it off the wall while trying to set it. It is better set from your iPhone. This would not be an issue if people were not playing with it so much do to the main issue in the next paragraph.

The main issue with the Nest is the lack of ability to control humidity settings. My old thermostat allowed this. I have discovered that living in the South, this is a very important feature for comfort.

When the nest turns on to cool the house, the humid cold air is annoyingly uncomfortable. Turning up the ambient room temperature to correct this results in a room that feels to warm after the AC stops blowing. So either you feel a little too cool when the AC is blowing, or a little too warm when it's not. This is not extreme, but just enough to be annoying if you spend time in your house. I don't notice it when I return form work and go to bed, but I do notice it on weekends and days off when I spend time in the house this summer.

I am well past the learning curve for a new device, and have not solved this, but I do see where the Nest measures the humidity. So it should be possible for the company to allow us to control it.

Since a basic wired thermostat has a humidity control feature, I am surprised that Nest does not. If I was not so lazy, I would re install my old thermostat. If Nest solves this problem, I will upgrade.

    Can't hold comfortable setting

    • Written by from Bothell

It looks good and the remote interface isn't bad but, but it allows the temperature to swing almost 2 degrees in either direction of the set temperature. This leaves you feeling too hot or too cold most of the time. It also make the set and forget ability of a programmable thermostat useless because you have to constantly adjust it. Going back to my ugly, no remote interface Honeywell.

Monitored My Home From 1,800 Miles Away

    • Written by from Carman

Spent the winter in Arizona and monitored my home's temperature in Carman, MB via iPhone, iPad and a PC. Great! Still can't believe they haven't built in a notice system that would send an email if furnace fails to start on demand and temperature drops. Given that one's login credentials include the email address, it seems like the infrastructure is all there. Someone just needs to activate it.

    Love this!

    • Written by from Kansas city

I installed the nest myself and had no problems. Our home is fairly new so all of the wires were the right ones. I had a few questions and the Nest customer service was great! I love being able to control our thermostat when I am not at home. We aren't going to use the setting where it learns our home and away from home pattern because we have crazy schedules and its never the same.

    Great thermostat

    • Written by from Rockland

I bought the first Generation and it worked well till they upgaded the software and everything went crazy and I was about to get rid of it because I couldn't find a solution and I notice that most new thermostats require the C wire so I changed the wiring to 5 wire and added the C wire and everything is working great since I made the changes so hopefully this may help other to fix there problems.
If it wasn't for the problem I had I would of gave it a 5.

Excellent device: Easy to use, & Smart device!

    • Written by from Sonora

Product works as described. When I travel, when I'm gone, NEST, "knows" and saves energy. Also it seems to update it's software behind the scenes, because my 1st generation thermostat showed the "airwave" symbol on screen indicating it had shut down the cooler, and was circulating. Installation was a breeze, it told me on-screen, which wires I did wrong, and how to correct it. My wife and I live in a planned community, and I have been given energy-consumption data for dozens of various sized homes and units. We're the only ones using NEST, and our energy consumption is conspicuously better than our neighbors. Easy to set, simple intuitive screens, monthly energy reports, the ability to control our thermostat from a smart-phone or tablet device where-ever we are, and arrive home to our ideal selected temperature.... It "learns" our habits and we now leave it alone. What's not to like?

    Love the Nest

    • Written by from Acton

We absolutely love the nest thermostat but its too bad it took so long to come to the Canadian App Store. It has already learned our temperature likes and times and the ability to remotely change and monitor temperatures is amazing, plus it looks very cool. A must have!

    Smart and Sleek.

    • Written by from San Antonio

This thermostat not only learns from your day to day use, it looks good while it is doing so. Install was way easier than my previous thermostat. And using it is a piece of cake. The build quality feels solid and the app to connect to the iPhone / iPad is intuitive.

    Great Solid Product

    • Written by from Plymouth

Been using the Nest thermostat and Nest Protect's for a few years and no huge complaints. I've never had any significant issues with the thermostat except for a few software issues that were quickly remedied by updates. Im not sure what issues the other reviewers have had with significant temp drops, since its set up with auto temps and a safety feature that will turn the heat on if it gets under a certain temp. I had the 'Offline' issue but that was fixed with some network troubleshooting. I can definitely see how it saves me money on oil as we've used much less oil in the past two years having the Nest. My only complaint is the difficulty getting support on their website. Since theres no live support or email support, you have to call them, which when I work during the day of their support hours, It can make it difficult. But as far as the hardware itself, its fantastic. Has more than paid for itself.

This is a huge improvement over all traditional or programmable thermostats. The ability to remotely access and command it is reason enough to own one or more, if you have multiple zones, as you can command or manage them from a single location, even after you've gone to bed. It's ability to sense when you have left the premises means you'll never again heat or cool an empty house because you forgot to set it before leaving. You'll get useful reports of your most recent 10 days of energy use, and will wish it was at least a full month to compare with your utility bill. It's relatively simple to install and set up initially, but has enough depth of options to satisfy your "control freak" tendencies. When auxiliary heat is needed, it isn't smart enough to keep the heat pump running continuously, but is otherwise pretty with it. Since it is online and can be continuously updated with new software, it should get even better with time.

If you do the research and install correctly, it works!!

    • Written by from Colorado Springs

We were looking to upgrade our current thermostat and found the Nest. we did the research before hand -- took a picture of our existing wiring set up, sent to Nest, and they replied our system was compatible.

bought off Amazon, arrived two days later. got the box, read the instructions to include the install picture we got from Nest earlier. Took less then 10 mins to install. One thing, once you get it powered and working, it automatically starts to look for updates. don't worry if you don't get the splash intro screen right off. its installing most recent software. a green light will blink at the top of the unit and a "house" icon will be on the screen. be patient (15 mins or so) as it updates.

one updated, it goes to work learning your schedule!

I truly believe most of the 1 star ratings installed this sucker on existing systems it is not compatible with -- and they did not do the research to find out before they bought it. we have now had it for one month, not one issue. looks great, has internet connection to an app, and functions as advertised. highly recommended!

    HAL 9000

    • Written by from Moreno Valley

HAL 9000 is what I named my Nest. This is one of the coolest things that I have ever bought. My old thermostat would always turn off and on at different times, yet it was not broken. When I installed it—the old unit—I set up a schedule. Yet 2 years later it seemed like it either never went by the schedule or just ignored it all together. Like many people, my energy savings went out of the door. I replaced it with the Nest—read Hal 9000—this thing is unbelievable! First off, they have thought of everything. The install, they have plates that cover up your old thermostat's hole... they include a screwdriver to disconnect the leads/wires from the old setup... they even have a leveler with the green fluid and bubble built into the unit so you know it is level. After the install be prepared to be amazed. This thing has wifi, learns your habits, you can operate from your phone or computer—it even senses when you are standing infront of it! This things is like strapping an iPhone/ipod/ipad to your heating and cooling system. Hal 9000- I mean the Nest is amazing! The only problem that I am having is explaining to my friends that they need to come over to my house to check out my killer thermostat. They think its weird until they see it, and then they want one. Only thing left to do now is teach it to open the pod bay doors, and then tell it to refuse to open them after I ask.

    Excellent

    • Written by from Innisfil

I have had this for over three months now, and I am truly amazed with it.
I like the fact that if I go away for a few days, I don't have to worry about setting up a new schedule, it knows I am away and takes care of everything.

On my way home form a weekend of fishing, I can turn on the air conditioning before I get home, so the house is cool by the time I get there.

I really like not having to switch the thermostat from heat to cool, it just knows what to do.

A fantastic device. I think it is overpriced, but I still bought one and I am very happy with it.

    Works as advertised... only better!

    • Written by from Tampa

We've been using our Nest for 4 months. It's completely learned our habits. It knows that in the morning it needs to cool down to compensate for my hair dryer, that Sunday mornings no one is home and it turns completely off. It knows our every move every day of the week and adjusts for it. Already seeing significant savings in our electric bill.

We had ours professionally installed and I could tell it was something we would not have been able to do. However, our installer had no idea how to set it up on our home network or connect to our wifi, but that part was a real breeze.

My husband and I both love being able to control it from our computers, iPad, or iPhones no matter where we are.

Only tip is to really give it a work out in the first two weeks so that it completely learns you patterns. You have to pay attention to your comfort all day long and tweak it all the time so it learns what you will be wanting it to do for you. The more you do, the more automatic it will make the adjustments in the future.

Excellent Product & Very Easy to Install !!!

    • Written by from Pointe-Claire

I love the Nest Learning Thermostat. It worked exactly as advertised and was very easy to install. They even provide you the tools to do the work ! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the limited reports you can get. It would be nice to be able to get fancy reports and graph. Other than that, works perfectly and the auto-learn features works great. It's nice to be able to remote control the unit from anywhere ! Love it ! Love it ! Love it !
