Not sure why all the bad reviews, so far this thing is amazing and works!

    • Written by from Dedham

I researched this and other smart thermostats for about a year and read review after review after review. Like you reading this now I was hesitant and heard the horror stories of pipes freezing and this thing being buggy. However I decided after all the mixed reviews to take the plunge. I live in a single family home in New England with one thermostat for the entire home and this took exactly 10 minutes to install. It fit nicely into the area that held my older digital thermostat and I added the base plate and connect the two wires and presto this thing was up and running. Now so far it is October and the weather is not freezing cold yet and this thing is trying to learn my habits etc, however I set up a schedule anyway but not sure I will need it. The ease of use for this device was unreal and I can see why so many people like it. It even looks awesome on the wall and I processed a $100 credit from the electric company as a rebate which helped to offset the cost.

What I do like so far is the iPhone app and the website which make this so easy to use and set up anyone could do it. Even the most complicated systems seem like they would be a snap. I will keep a watch on this as the weather gets colder to see how it works and hopefully I have no issues. I would recommend this at this point to anyone since digital thermostats are a thing of the past and I cannot see Honeywell catching up to this anytime soon. Take the plunge, go buy one! I may get the Nest protect but so far that looks full of bugs.

Great Design, horrible product with major issues

    • Written by from Riverside

The Nest has the beauty of Apple design but poor quality product

The product installs easily and support is good

After running fine for a couple months I came home to both my furnace and air conditioner running at the same time. This was for three days and house was 90 degrees. The energy costs alone are greater than any potential savings. The danger factor alone for this known problem is high and I can't believe they don't recall the product.

I received no alerts or anything on the iphone app. It only pretends to be intelligent for minor features. It is has little intelligence for reliably heating and cooling your house which is the main job.

I went back to a $25 Honeywell thermostat from Home Depot and everything is fine. Nest will replace unit but how could you trust the device.

    Great thermostat!

    • Written by from Hickory Hills

After months of struggling with a thermostat that I never seemed to understand, the second generation Nest Learning Thermostat was born, and I bought it!

I love this thermostat. I've had it for about 6 months now and have no complaints. Install was super easy, connecting was easy too. I love being able to check the temperature from my phone at all times and being able to warm up the house if my day ends early for some reason.

Auto away is great. Sometimes when I make a quick stop at home I find myself hiding from the thermostat so that it doesn't see me and turn on. (Frequent on and off of HVAC equipment is bad)

I have had no power issues or errors appear on the nest. I have had few network issues but those fell on the cable company (my laptop and smart tv wouldn't connect either)

The bottom line is I just wanted a thermostat that I knew how to use so that I would actually use it. I love my Nest.

    Amazing is an understatement

Sooo I bought two of these jewels for my home. Setup was a snap. I had them both working in less time than it took for the software to update. The energy reporting day over day is really helpful. The remote access is great fun. We were out of town for the weekend. We set the temp to 80 and cut the usage for one unit to 0 hours compared to 6 hours and the other to about 6 hours instead of 11 hours (two story house). When we left for home we set them back to 77 and when we walked in the door the entire house was cool and comfortable. I am very anxious to see what kind of energy savings we will enjoy now that we can really monitor our usage. Only criticism, is I wish the daily energy usage could also be viewed real time every six hours day over day.

    Awesome Thermostat!

Works great. iPhone 4S app is amazing. Very intuitive. Looks great. "Away" feature allows you to use the A/C or heating less and save $$$. Really nice to be able to go away on vacation and turn it on remotely before you get home.

And great customer service. I thought I had a hardware issue that likely was software related but support helped me out over a couple phone calls. Even sent me replacement parts and a charging cable all free of charge. Highly recommend.

I never thought a thermostat could upgrade a room. I know my old white one that was stuck on 74 degrees wasn't very pretty. My new lovely Nest thermostat is gorgeous! And it almost feels like my AC works better now. This is one of the coolest gadgets I have ever bought. I think I might like it more than my iPad or iPhone....well, at least I equally love them all.

Easy to install, took 20 minutes, and over the last 5 months saved us about 20% in our electric bill. This is the best consumer product I have purchased in many years.

    Love It!

I've had the nest for a little over a month. I have yet to see another power bill to compare savings, but intuitively, I know I have saved money.

The installation is easy. Just take a picture of your current thermostat's wiring, use the Nest website to determine if your system is compatible, and then its as simple as taking the old unit off and reconnecting the new one with maybe a few holes needing to be drilled. Programming the unit was relatively easy too. Once I manually entered the wifi password, just about everything else I could do from my laptop.

Once you set up the system, it does learn your habits, but it also has settings to keep various temperatures during the day and an away feature that can be set. The way I see it, you have redundant options to keep your house comfortable without wasting power.

One feature I love is the iPhone app. I can monitor the house temperature throughout the day. I often use this feature when I am leaving work to ensure that the house is comfortable by the time I arrive home.

    Simple to install, works flawlessly

    • Written by from Media

Even the packaging on this product was very well done. Installed in under 15 minutes. I used the back plate to prevent patching and painting the area behind my previous programmable thermostat. The setup is elegant. I have a forced air system with gas for heat, and so far I have only used the A/C portion. I can control the thermostat from my iPhone, iPad, computer or old school - right on the thermostat. The quality is exceptional and certainly justifies a higher cost. Not sure $250 is the magic number but if you look at it from a cost savings perspective, it will likely pay for itself eventually, but not quickly. I also own Philips Hue lighting and the iOS software for the Nest is significantly better. I did not have to call technical support so I can't really comment there. Easy to adjust whether you are in the house or on the go. Obvious Apple design influence. Bottom line: looks great, works as advertised, software is well designed, easy to install, and great to be able to control remotely. I have not used it long enough to get a sense of the self learning benefits, but tracking is easy with the software provided.

    Nest Gen. 2

    • Written by from El Dorado Hills

I recently installed 3 of these and love the simplicity and ease of use. The design is very cool- not a surprise since this company CEO is Tony Fadell - the man who was largely responsible for the original iPod design. Took a little work to connect properly as 2 of my locations needed a common wire which I had to also connect at the HVAC control panel up in the attic. Easy to do but took an extra 15 minutes. Now that they are up and running they operate flawlessly. I love being able to control from my iPhone/iPad as my wife and I travel often and can easily control our HVAC system if we want to cool/heat our home before we return home.

Great product, but don't upgrade yet, especially if you live in the South

    • Written by from SLIDELL

Have had my nest almost a year. Installed it the end of last summer. Love all its features except 2:

The first is the way it plugs into the wall. It is very easy for family members to knock it off the wall while trying to set it. It is better set from your iPhone. This would not be an issue if people were not playing with it so much do to the main issue in the next paragraph.

The main issue with the Nest is the lack of ability to control humidity settings. My old thermostat allowed this. I have discovered that living in the South, this is a very important feature for comfort.

When the nest turns on to cool the house, the humid cold air is annoyingly uncomfortable. Turning up the ambient room temperature to correct this results in a room that feels to warm after the AC stops blowing. So either you feel a little too cool when the AC is blowing, or a little too warm when it's not. This is not extreme, but just enough to be annoying if you spend time in your house. I don't notice it when I return form work and go to bed, but I do notice it on weekends and days off when I spend time in the house this summer.

I am well past the learning curve for a new device, and have not solved this, but I do see where the Nest measures the humidity. So it should be possible for the company to allow us to control it.

Since a basic wired thermostat has a humidity control feature, I am surprised that Nest does not. If I was not so lazy, I would re install my old thermostat. If Nest solves this problem, I will upgrade.

    Can't hold comfortable setting

    • Written by from Bothell

It looks good and the remote interface isn't bad but, but it allows the temperature to swing almost 2 degrees in either direction of the set temperature. This leaves you feeling too hot or too cold most of the time. It also make the set and forget ability of a programmable thermostat useless because you have to constantly adjust it. Going back to my ugly, no remote interface Honeywell.
