    Works as advertised... only better!

We've been using our Nest for 4 months. It's completely learned our habits. It knows that in the morning it needs to cool down to compensate for my hair dryer, that Sunday mornings no one is home and it turns completely off. It knows our every move every day of the week and adjusts for it. Already seeing significant savings in our electric bill.

We had ours professionally installed and I could tell it was something we would not have been able to do. However, our installer had no idea how to set it up on our home network or connect to our wifi, but that part was a real breeze.

My husband and I both love being able to control it from our computers, iPad, or iPhones no matter where we are.

Only tip is to really give it a work out in the first two weeks so that it completely learns you patterns. You have to pay attention to your comfort all day long and tweak it all the time so it learns what you will be wanting it to do for you. The more you do, the more automatic it will make the adjustments in the future.

I love the Nest Learning Thermostat. It worked exactly as advertised and was very easy to install. They even provide you the tools to do the work ! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the limited reports you can get. It would be nice to be able to get fancy reports and graph. Other than that, works perfectly and the auto-learn features works great. It's nice to be able to remote control the unit from anywhere ! Love it ! Love it ! Love it !

I received two nest thermostats for Christmas and they are incredible devices. Simple to install, easy to configure, and has saved us $$$. After the first couple of weeks learning our active household schedule we haven't touched the thermostat = it just works!!! The clean simple aesthetics look amazing in the house and everyone that walks in wants to know everything about them.

Buy these, you will not regret it one moment...

    Nest Gen. 2

I recently installed 3 of these and love the simplicity and ease of use. The design is very cool- not a surprise since this company CEO is Tony Fadell - the man who was largely responsible for the original iPod design. Took a little work to connect properly as 2 of my locations needed a common wire which I had to also connect at the HVAC control panel up in the attic. Easy to do but took an extra 15 minutes. Now that they are up and running they operate flawlessly. I love being able to control from my iPhone/iPad as my wife and I travel often and can easily control our HVAC system if we want to cool/heat our home before we return home.

Bought the 2nd gen Nest. Returned it because it didn't work with Honeywell air cleaner or humidifier.

When they upgrade again (3rdgen) hopefully these shortcoming will be corrected.

I replaced my old programmable with the Nest after reading a great deal of positive reviews. They were right, it's just fantastic. I believe it is saving energy. The temperature feels more constant and more comfortable overall. It leaves little to be desired, except a few things. For one, the app that controls it should provide more information and graphs on the main screen. It was easy to program. I would recommend to anyone that can afford one. It is said they pay for themselves in less than two years. Time will tell.

    Nest not as advertised

Not satisfied with operation after 2 calls to Nest support. 2 issues:
1-if not at home thermostat does go to auto away but it also automatically turns itself on and heats to set temperature even when not at home. It is supposed to stay at auto away until it senses someone arrives home.
2- when at home if set temp is turned down manually it automatically goes back up to set temperature....wasting energy.
I am sorry that I spent $500 on two thermostats that I find have never operated as advertised.
I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Awesome product. My "do it yourself" skills are limited to changing light bulbs, but even I was able to install this thing on my own in under an hour. Coolest app enabled accessory I've purchased so far. Very easy to use and intuitive. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I had a two wire thermostat, gas fired furnace installation.
While the instructions state that this type of installation is straight forward and will work, it quickly became apparent that this is not the case.
The unit has an internal re-chargeable battery that charges itself while the heating circuit is closed and the furnace is running when in used a two-wire thermostat system. The problem with this is that the heating system may not be active for a long enough time to fully charge this battery.
This was the case in our installation and it was not long (about 10 hours after installation) before the battery was discharged to the point where the Nest would not function.
To ensure that the battery does charge on a regular basis I ran a third wire from the thermostat to the furnace and connected this to the continuous low-voltage supply at the furnace thermostat wiring panel. This wire is referred to as a "C" wire and the "C" terminal on our furnace wiring panel was clearly marked with a "C" making it easy to complete this installation on my own. Having done this I have had no problems with the unit and it works exactly as promised in all of the literature.
The "self learning" function works great and the ability to activate and control the Nest from wherever I have an internet connection and my iPhone or iPad is outstanding.
We have been using the Nest for over one month now, during a particularly cold period, and can already see a difference in our overall power consumption. While this may be due to any number of other factors I feel that this product has contributed.

C wire needed but then all is good

Good - easy to use free app, sleek, simple, great phone help

Bad - needed C wire, suggested Pro install would bump cost into other more robust system price range such as Honeywell

I was lucky I had an unused wire in the wall and was able to run 24v from my plenum heater panal. Happy now, but almost did not work. Talked with a local installer who said he always ran C wires to the unit.

    Love/Hate

I loved the idea of this thermostat so much, I bought two. The first hurdle was installation. I chose a professional installation through Nest, but after 3 failed attempts to schedule "local" installers on their list. I gave up. It seems that the contracted installers have a certain mileage limit they commit to as Nest Certified Installers, but won't actually travel more than 20 miles or cross State lines to do a job. At least that's the way it is where I live. Nest would schedule and the contractor would call me directly and tell me they couldn't do the job and I should call Nest to find another installer.

So, I lost two days of work dealing with that hot mess. Nest was kind enough to refund the install fee and my local Heating guy took the amount I was quoted by Nest. So, it was a Win/Win except for having to burn two days of vacation. The install was a breeze for the Heating Company tech. He had one in his home and one in his vacation home. He had nothing but good things to say.

The last six weeks have been great. I've been watching energy savings rack up on the iOS App by setting my heat to a 50 dgree low while away 5 days per week. In fact a friend just asked me today how I liked the T-stat. I raved about it and he plans to buy one tomorrow. Then I got home.

The entire upstairs was cold, it's 18 degrees outside and snowing on a Friday night. My upstairs Nest was showing an error E30. One of the wires was not giving power. If there is one thing I have learned in my 40+ years, it's that the wire itself is hardly ever the problem. The problem is usually at the origin or the termination point. So, I fired up tech support on the Nest site, got a case number and called the tech support line. Two hours later, many wire swaps, power cycles, trips to the fuse box and transfers of support personell. I was left with a choice between shorting the wires so that my Oil Burner runs continuosly costing ooodles of cash or sleeping on the couch and hoping the upstairs pipes don't freeze. The Nest tech thinks it's the Tstat base. It's Friday, my new Nest arrives on Tuesday. Really? This product may not be ready for prime time.
