    DON'T BUY!

    • Written by from Toronto

As of iphone 5, the noise cancelling mic is on the back by the camera. When you open the bookbook to talk on your phone, the mic is covered and everyone you speak to will complain as they can hardly hear you.

12 south advice is to speak on the phone without folding the case completely back on it self OR disable the rear mic in settings. I've done both and people still complain. I asked bookbook what other ideas they had for the issue and even supplied them with a copy of the receipt. I won't say what they told me but I'm teetering between laughing, crying and feeling insulted.

This case looks good, has great features but really kills the main function of the iphone which is to be used as a phone.

Apparently any case that folds back like the bookbook will have the same result.

Apple should stop selling this product and 12south should stop manufacturing it. Or at least honour the warranty to us poor sods who have purchased it.

    Not built to last...

    • Written by from Winston Salem

Good product, but will not last. mine has cardboard and plastic exposed at the corners after 15 months of normal use. Given the price, a leather product should last longer. Sadly, I could not even get the support department of Twelve South to acknowledge that their product should last 15 months with normal use. If you want a few months of use, this is highly functional, but it is not a longer term solution.

    Step Up and Step Out

    • Written by from Cornwall

This is a 5 star rating, of course, after having used it for a half dozen months and having had a 4 Book for a couple of years or more. This one is perfect. Thank you! Why? Not really bulky, when you think it can carry your major card or two, your medical information, fishing license and an emergency $5 bill, plus a cash card and a drug card, if you're in to drugs.

Bonus factor for those who always complain about how hard it is to take their phone out a case to insert in to some other specialty item, like a bike ride system or a music system such as Bose has to offer: it's a very simple thing to do, you just take it out and press it back in to the binder. It's a miracle, and a very useful one at that, as opposed to other miracles, which do not seem to move me much, having no utilitarian value at all. This case is excellent. I would buy it for you if you loved me.

    Amazing Case!!

    • Written by from Rocky River

I have have this case with my iPhone5 for a year now and absolutely love it!! However, there are a couple of things to mention after reading some of the other reviews.

I have heard that the case won't close all the way. This case is leather and just needs broken in. It easily holds my 6 Cards, License, a couple of receipts and some cash and lays flat without issue. It fits nicely in my back pocket without any discomfort.

As for all of the comments of people not being able to hear you or your voice being muffled while using the case. It is not a case issue, it is a phone issue. There are three mics on an iPhone 5. When you open the case and flip it back to use the phone it covers the little mic between the camera lens and flash. I think it is to help with noise cancellation. When it is covered it cancels out part of your own voice making it sound muffled. It took me a while to figure this out, but once I did, I just don't fold the case all the way back when talking. I now have no issues.

I used to misplace my wallet all the time, forget my license, forget cards or cash. Since getting this case I am never without these necessities! I actually got on today to buy one for my wife. I can't imagine any other case being as functional and looking so good in the process. I more than recommend:)

This thing is great! I love it.. only problem is that it takes time to wear in… But when it does its great. I wish there was more credit card slots and room for cash. other than that great product

    Great Case

    • Written by from Cambridge

Great case, very handy too. Have had for about a week and is holding up fine. Takes some getting use to when texting/calling as the the front flap does not completely bend back (at least I won't bend it all the way). i find that it holding 4 cards is more than enough for when going out. It does look like you are reading a little bible when using...maybe that is a good thing and people will leave you alone when using. I did purchase an extra screen protector to use as well.

    Form over function

    • Written by from Mequon

Anyone looking into this case should know one important con! There is a significant loss in cellular signal strength if you attempt to talk on the phone with this case. If you have five bars where you live, then disregard this, but I often have to remove the case (a cumbersome process) to have a decent quality phone conversation in my house. Now I love the looks of the 12South cases - I had the BookBook 4 for my IPhone 4s, and I bought this 5s case too. Now, I spend more time online and texting than I do on the phone, but anyone who does do a lot of talking should be wary of the case's drawbacks. Other than the reception issue, this design has some big plusses - RFID chips (like your subway card or your ID) can be read through the front or the back of the case, which makes swiping onto public transportation a snap. The simplest convenience of all is having your necessary cards, your cash, and your iPhone all in one easily accessible place. Three stars, of five.

    Bad Quality Materials: Faulty Design

    • Written by from Silver Spring

I've had mine for a day and it's looking like it will fall apart within the month.

As other reviewers have mentioned you can't talk on the phone while the phone is in the case.

Great case if you don't use your phone for talking

    • Written by from Cameron Park

I loved this case the first week I had it until person after person would complain they couldn't hear me. So frustrating! Turns out it's a flawed design. Twelve South and Apple went opposite directions and if you use this case it interferes with Apple's new noise cancelation canceling your own voice.

    DON'T BUY IT

    Unique and practical iphone case

    • Written by from WEST HAVEN

This is my 3rd BookBook Case for my 3rd iphone. This case works for my iPhone 5S. One HUGE improvement is that they added an opening for the camera -- my BookBook case for the iPhone 4 did not have one. I have had lots of compliments on this case. It also holds your driver's license and a few credit cards. It is Leather, so it takes a little break-in, but gets better with age.

    Book Book for iphone 5

    • Written by from Lubbock

Love the design and it protects my iphone like nothing else I have had. I have had it since March and it looks like I have carried it through a world war combat assignment. The color has all rubbed off to a dull gray. I didn’t expect it to stay shiny and brand new looking, I just didn’t expect it to look shabby this quickly.

and then fell apart. Completely. This case is probably good if you want to replace it every few months with a new one. Otherwise, not so much. The idea is awesome and the wallet attached to the phone provides great function but the execution is simply not good.

Looks great, poor assembly and user experience

    • Written by from Leander

This is my second BookBook for iPhone. I'm disappointed in the quality of this product. It seems that while they look nice on the outside, there are many shortfalls that aren't caught in the QC process. 2 specific examples: after less than a week the glue around the phone holder began to melt and the leather behind it began to separate. This is most likely caused by the heat that the phone puts off (something that obviously should have been taken into consideration). The second issue I had was that you could not talk on it without a headset. When you bent the wallet back to bring it to your ear it covered the noise cancellation microphone which led to me sounding muffled on the other end. This is most likely going to be a problem with all wallet phones. Ultimately, I'm taking this product back and purchasing a 'regular' phone case.

Poorer quality vs previous version of BookBook

    • Written by from PITTSBURGH

In a word, the current BookBook is shoddy, and does not seem like it will hold up well. Mine is about 6 weeks old, and it is delaminating. It sounds like a taped-together thing that is coming apart then making a tacky sound as it sticks, then unsticks. This happens in the backing, under where the phone is clipped in. When I touch the back of BookBook, it makes this sound.

I have faith in the vendor, they will likely send me a new one. But, will they continue to do this every other month or so? Their design is faulty, and the materials seem cheaper and less nice than the previous (iPhone 4/4S bookbook) version.

Quality issues aside, and they are enough to sink this product, is the fact that iPhone 5/5S have a tall/narrow shape. This means the bookbook is tall/narrow...so while it gains an extra credit card slot, it has a narrower money area (it's worse at holding cash that the previous version). One (and really only one) positive about this new bookbook version, is that they included a hole in the back, so one can take photos without removing the iPhone from the case.

I loved my 4S bookbook and it lasted great for the 2 years I used it. This one is failing after less than a couple months, and that's for a $60 product. I can't recommend this, and I will not be buying any more cases from this vendor.

Very cute case. But very poor sound quality.

    • Written by from Los Altos

I originally bought this case for my IPhone 5 and now my new 5S is sitting in it snugly and comfortably. However the sound quality while taking a call is equally poor for both iPhone 5 and 5S. There's something about this case that makes you sound muffled or like you're in a tunnel. If I want to have a decent conversation with anyone I have to take the phone out of its case. This sounds like a pain in the neck and I guess it is but you'll get used to it. I still use my BookBook Vol. V. every day with business cards, health insurance card, driver's license, 2 credit cards and cash, and sometimes I stuff it with receipts, etc.. So it is a very versatile, cute, attractive "storage case". Because you'll end up prying the phone out of the case multiple times a day and carrying it "naked" in your shirt or pants pocket, only to return it to the BookBook case to "store it" when you go out, step into your car, etc.. The case is fun and attractive and occasionally people comment on it but not as much as you'd expect...

Best case I have ever owned

    • Written by from Biloxi

I love this case. It fits my iPhone 5S well and combines my wallet and phone in one case! The quality of the material is excellent. The only part that is failing is the the material that is glued on the edges that encompasses the phone. I have had to re-glue the material back on.
Everyone that sees my case loves it and wants to know where I got it.

Terribly distorts the microphone on phone calls

    • Written by from Dracut

I'm having the same issues as well.

1st was an iPhone 5, I got it replaced as it could be a BAD MIC

2nd is now an iPhone 5S, and still the same audio issue.

I also love the case, I just wished that Book Book has advertised the issue.

Took me hours of wasted time and lots of frustration till I find the issue with the case.

    Just DONT BUY IT.

Terribly distorts the microphone on phone calls

    • Written by from Corpus Christi

It is bizarre to think that the little tiny bit of leather that hangs below the phone makes it impossible for the person you are talking to to hear you. BUT IT DOES. The second you take the phone out of the case they hear you fine. Love the case, but this one defect makes the case impossible for me to use. I am going to return it today.
