    Nobody can hear you

    • Written by from Alexandria

What most reviews say is true: the way this case is designed prevents for the iPhone microphone to work properly. You can't use the phone without headphones. I can't believe how such an expensive case could be so defective. I tried cutting the bottom part of the case to eliminate any potential blockages to the mic, but still it does not work properly. Do not buy this very expensive and low quality case, please... you'll regret it.

    Book Book iPhone 5s case

    • Written by from Salem

I had this case for a little over a year and the stitching is coming undone on the front of the case. On the inside where the phone attaches the leather is separating. I had one for the iphone 4 also with no problems. I wonder if they are not monitoring quality control. $60 dollars a year is a lot for a phone case. I'm going to look for something other than this product. I loved it when it worked, but it's just not well made.

    Loved previous version

    • Written by from Montague

Before I bought this for my I Phone 5, I read all the reviews. I should have headed the many, many people who said that this newer version messes, somehow, with the sound quality. But, I wanted this so badly that I ignored those reviewers. I now thoroughly regret it. People I am talking to on the phone say it sounds like I'm in a tunnel . When I take the case off, it's fine. An Apple Store I went to denied this to be true (since Apple sells this product) but all the employees had to agree with me, once they tried it. In order to talk on the phone I have to quickly pop the phone out of the case. This new, improved model holds the phone nice and securely, so this quick pop-out maneuver is not easy or quick. It requires a little force. This back-and-forth has caused the case to become unglued. I feel rather unglued myself, about the whole thing. Grrr. Don't bother.

    Had High Hopes

    • Written by from Bloomington

At first glance, the look, the feel, and functionality we're just what I had hoped for. But after a few months, I find myself searching for a replacement product. First problem was the mute issue when the case is folded back on itself. People cannot hear you. Second is the quality of the product. The addhesive used to laminate the book together degrades over time and the product just falls apart. To bad, because both of these problems could be resolved with a little thought and ingenuity.

    DON'T BUY!

    • Written by from Toronto

As of iphone 5, the noise cancelling mic is on the back by the camera. When you open the bookbook to talk on your phone, the mic is covered and everyone you speak to will complain as they can hardly hear you.

12 south advice is to speak on the phone without folding the case completely back on it self OR disable the rear mic in settings. I've done both and people still complain. I asked bookbook what other ideas they had for the issue and even supplied them with a copy of the receipt. I won't say what they told me but I'm teetering between laughing, crying and feeling insulted.

This case looks good, has great features but really kills the main function of the iphone which is to be used as a phone.

Apparently any case that folds back like the bookbook will have the same result.

Apple should stop selling this product and 12south should stop manufacturing it. Or at least honour the warranty to us poor sods who have purchased it.

    Not built to last...

    • Written by from Winston Salem

Good product, but will not last. mine has cardboard and plastic exposed at the corners after 15 months of normal use. Given the price, a leather product should last longer. Sadly, I could not even get the support department of Twelve South to acknowledge that their product should last 15 months with normal use. If you want a few months of use, this is highly functional, but it is not a longer term solution.

    Bad Quality Materials: Faulty Design

I've had mine for a day and it's looking like it will fall apart within the month.

As other reviewers have mentioned you can't talk on the phone while the phone is in the case.

and then fell apart. Completely. This case is probably good if you want to replace it every few months with a new one. Otherwise, not so much. The idea is awesome and the wallet attached to the phone provides great function but the execution is simply not good.

Terribly distorts the microphone on phone calls

    • Written by from Dracut

I'm having the same issues as well.

1st was an iPhone 5, I got it replaced as it could be a BAD MIC

2nd is now an iPhone 5S, and still the same audio issue.

I also love the case, I just wished that Book Book has advertised the issue.

Took me hours of wasted time and lots of frustration till I find the issue with the case.

    Just DONT BUY IT.

Terribly distorts the microphone on phone calls

    • Written by from Corpus Christi

It is bizarre to think that the little tiny bit of leather that hangs below the phone makes it impossible for the person you are talking to to hear you. BUT IT DOES. The second you take the phone out of the case they hear you fine. Love the case, but this one defect makes the case impossible for me to use. I am going to return it today.

    Good Looks...Unusable Sound Quality

    • Written by from Tulsa

I love Twelve South and have used the BookBook cases since they first came out. This is a high-quality beautiful case with one serious outstanding fault. This case ruins the sound quality of the microphone and will consistently cause your contact on the other end of the call to ask you to repeat yourself. I don't know what is causing this but after buying a second case to see if it was just an anomaly of the first one I am sad to report it is not.

If you don't use your phone for telephone calls then this case is perfect...but if you ever have to hold a phone up to your ear DON'T BUY THIS CASE.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved with the next iPhone model.

NO ONE can hear you!!!! Rear mic gets covered up while on the phone.

    • Written by from Marysville

Opening the case to talk results in the rear-noise-canceling microphone getting covered up. This causes your voice to become completely muffled to the person on the other end. You will not be able to use the case while you talk on the phone. This didn't happen on my iPhone 4 with this same case but that is because apple moved the mic location to the back of the phone. I loved twelve south and have many of their products. However, I am very disappointed with the company as a whole. They know about the problem pretend that it is possible to fix it by trying to use your pinky finger and index finger to try and hold the back page of the case up off the back while talking. SERIOUSLY? What a cowardly way out! I want to buy your new hi rise for my iPhone but I didn't want to support your company any more after this. Frustrating!

    Does Not Age Well

    • Written by from Dorchester

Pros: It holds enough stuff that I no longer carry a purse or wallet.
Cons: People thought I was carrying a bible around (wtf?) and over time it looked worse and worse. I've finally painted it blue to make it look better but less than 6 months after purchasing I am looking for a new case. Leather has stretched. It looks ratty. It holds 8 cards but it's a tight fit. Part of the phone holder has separated from the backing. I really hated the worn look it came with. It was too much fake wear. I don't have sound issues with the case though. I'd avoid this one and I regret buying it.

    Good Looking, terrible design.

    • Written by from Guelph

The old design without the clip in feature was way better. The backing of my case, to which the clip is mounted, started to separate at the corners within a few months and the whole backside has now pealed away to reveal the cardboard backing along the entire length of the back flap where the clip connects to the back of the wallet.

Same story - loved it on my iPhone 4, but it ruins the sound quality on the 5. Do NOT buy if you have the 5. All your friends will keep asking you to call them from a land line.

ruins sound on iPhone 5, cool look

    • Written by from Overland Park

I had a bookbook for my iPhone 4s and absolutely loved it. couldn't wait to get the new one for my iPhone 5. Looks cool but it muffles the sound even when you hold it open. I don't know if the reviewers who like it have the same problem. Very very disappointed because I love the case but it makes my phone unusable. When I contacted 12 South, they said no one else had the problem and would not give a refund. Obviously thats not true as seen above. It probably just needs a bigger hole for the back microphone but 12 south just seems to ignore it.

Blocks the mic, difficult to hold

    • Written by from Albuquerque

I got my BookBook case from the Apple store in Albuquerque. I thought it would be just what I wanted: one case to hold my iPhone 5, driver's license, credit cards, and cash. I like to keep it simple. After 3 weeks I am utterly disappointed due to multiple flaws.

First, the inside surface of the case is leather, which at first I thought was cool, but then I noticed that that the leather rubs up against the iPhone surface, smudging the glass and leaving a cloudy film that is hard to remove. Not much later, I discovered the microphone problem. I had several phone calls in which the person on the other end had difficulty hearing me. Later I was told by an Apple Genius that the bookbook case blocks the microphone on the back of the iPhone! Now, this only happens if you wrap the front of the case around when you talk. But that is the obvious way to use the case, because otherwise the front just hangs there like an open door, making it very awkward and difficult to hold while you talk. So evidently, Twelve South never actually experimented with using their case with an actual iPhone, bc they should have seen this coming.

Finally, the bookbook card holders are very tight, and if you're like me, you want quick access to your debit card. I'm tired of struggling with the case, pulling and coercing my card just to get it out.

So basically, this case has a cool look and potentially useful design, but it was implemented poorly and so it fails pretty badly. I no longer use it, and at $60, that's extremely disappointing!!!

    Great for about 10 months.

    • Written by from Baltimore

This case deserved 5+ stars from me until now. Unfortunately, its defect doesn't matter to the company since warranty ended 2 months ago. The problem has been ongoing since before then, but I thought it was the phone, not the case. After having it for the better part of a year, the leather stretched a bit as leather does. This makes a bit of "play" between the case and the phone, which causes the infrared sensor (at the top of the phone) to be covered by the case when you move your head. So if you want to look at the phone while ON the phone, sometimes the screen doesn't function until you wiggle it back in place. I had the whole OS rebuilt on the phone (losing some data) because my Genius figured the phone was buggy. Luckily I was able to restore the previous backup and get back all my stuff. I've written to 12 South and they won't help me based on it being out of warranty. I'm going to call again and talk to someone else, at least register an official complaint. Another company whose product had a post-warranty defect that was their fault, sold me a new product for about half off. That would be the right thing to do, and then I would be sure to exchange it before a year. Yes, it's silly to get a case that won't last a year, but as I said, this case is great. Although now I'm wondering if the reception problem is because of this as well...it's in the car on bluetooth when people can't hear me.
