    HUE is a WINNER!!!

    • Written by from Lexington

Bought a starter kit plus 3 individual bulbs today. Took 10 minutes to set up. I had to convince the "geniuses" at the local Apple Store that HUE really existed. They went online, discovered it did, went in the back room, found and sold them. No one had asked about them before I walked in.

They assured me I could return them in 14 days, so I decided to try them. Hue and the free App is amazing! Download your own pic. Touch it to turn on the lights. Group anyway you want, dim independently, color control independently.

If you turn off the wall switch, the bulbs forget where they were. Turn the switch back on, and the bulbs turn on to default approx. 3000 degrees K. Then touch any mood you set up on the iPhone, and it instantly changes colors & intensity.

We have a 50's Diner designed kitchen with black / white tile, red wall tile, red neon accents, so touch the 50's Diner photo, and 4 bulbs come on, 2 red and 2 whatever temp white you choose. Halloween? Orange no problem. Christmas? Red and Green.

    Positives:
1-A must if you are really into home automation, home theatre, etc.
2-Extremely high quality feel bulb design
3-Bulbs run barely warm and draw 8.5 watts max
    4-Super easy to use
5-No need to use your iPhone. Set the onboard timer function for on / off. Gives that lived in look, and no need to turn on / off every time.
    6-Full dimming capability
7-Default to Warm White (looks like 3000 degree K) if power fails and comes back on
8-No high frequency sound, no flicker, no RFI interference
9-Instantly group able and groups can be changed instantly
10-Philips is a leader in LED technology. I have over 100 Philips LED bulbs in service for over a year, with no failures. yet, Lights of America and other off brands have failed 100% in a year! The electronics fail, not the LED's themselves in the off brands.
11-Touch a pic of the room to turn the lights on.
12-Set a different background pic for every page of moods.
13-Set a page up for every room. This groups the bulbs to a scene in that room by choosing the specific page on the iPhone.

    Complaints:
    1-Price
2-Only medium Base available today. I need Candelabra base and need R30
3-600 Lumen output is a little low but is OK

These bulbs are NOT going back!!! Wife loves them, as do I. 'Nuff said!!!

    Ok got it working...

    • Written by from MILLINGTON

Controlling lights from iPad and iPhone is neat. Colors work well. There is a slight learning curve..

I recommend using all the lights on setup, this may have been problem for me since I screwed in only one bulb..

Also I noted when you edit bulb name light flashes while in edit mode.

This would have been a definite 5 star but unfortunately tech support is nonexistent except for email.

    Somehow Bittersweet

    • Written by from Huntsville

I bought a starter kit and in a few words, I was amazed. However, I went back to the Apple store and bought a second kit because there were no single packs available and thought about having a spare bridge.

The bad news is that found out the bulbs that comes with a starter kit cannot be used with a different bridge from another starter kit. Each bridge holds up to 50 bulbs only if single packs. That makes no sense!!!

Does that mean that if the bridge breaks there is no way to use the bulbs?? Now I am deciding if returning them all, because why would I want these bulbs that last ~ 15 years and if the bridge brake they cannot be used with another bridge.

    Great BUT Beware

    • Written by from Elk Grove

I bought two starter packs thinking that the two packs would give me six lights to control and if my bridge ever went out, an extra bridge. I was wrong. The starter packs control ONLY the lights in the starter pack and the additional individual hue lights. I must now wait for stock to be available at Apple Store to return the extra starter pack and get the three individual lights. I love the functionality of the application. I tried connecting my bridge to the online account and it failed over 15 times to connect; I gave up. I guess I won't be waking up to a simulated sunrise in my future. I called Philips and was told that some of the features don't work yet and it wasn't tested very thoroughly before being released as well as the training to handle issues wasn't administered. I will limp along using two bridges in one app while I wait on stock to arrive, but I would have loved to have known about this BEFORE I spent the time and money to buy a product that wasn't compatible. That I blame on Philips.

Timer feature is not as advertised!

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

One reason I bought this was to set the lights to go off and on to make it look like I'm home when I'm not, which seemed reasonable considering their advertising. It turns out that times can only be set for a single 24 hour period, which means I have to re-set the timers EVERY DAY! After multiple contacts with Phillips Tech Support over multiple days, I have been told that "when the SDK for Hue will be released then you will be able to create your own Apps for the Hue system. We apologise that there is nothing that we can do to help you further with your issue."

Take this into consideration before buying this product.

    Interesting and fun lighting system!

    • Written by from Norfolk

I heard about this home automation system yesterday and decided to try out. My review is based on one night of setup and testing the capabilities, but I am impressed. The setup was simple, the automated control was smooth and worked as advertised. Me and a few friends had fun just playing with the lighting combinations. My neighbors probably thought we had a concert going on. Then we realized that there is an online community where you can share your light settings with others and download theirs. This added a new level of interest and amusement for us. I woke this morning to my lights ,set by timer, simulating a sunrise. Simply amazing! I will update his review if I find any negatives, besides the price, but so far the amount of enjoyment and amusement has made the price worth it.

Great idea, but room for improvement

    • Written by from Royal Oak

First, be aware that these bulbs are not for use outdoors or in enclosed light fixtures, even though the website clearly shows the bulb being used in an enclosed lamp. You won't discover these limitations until after you purchased the product and read the materials inside. No mention of this is made on Philips website. Setup was fairly easy for the main kit with 3 bulbs but I found adding another bulb took more time and the hub had difficulty finding the bulb and only did so after I installed it in the same room the hub was in and then I was able to move the bulb to another location. The app is fairly easy to use but needs improvement (ex. you can schedule lights to go on at a certain time but you can't pick specific days..it's 7 days a week or nothing). Hopefully minor things like this will be corrected. As far as selecting colors, you can't pick certain colors like blacks or greys or really dark colors. Biggest complaint is this...your light switch has to always be on for these to work. If you turn on the switch by hand, the lights default to bright white. If you turn the light switch off, the bulbs will not respond to the app. So basically you have to turn on the lights, let them go white, then turn them off with the app if you wish to control them outside of your home or from somewhere in your home away from the switch you use to turn them on at a later time. Also, the lights are not compatible with dimmer switches so every time you manually turn them on, they are BRIGHT WHITE and then you have to adjust the brightness with the app. Trying to adjust brightness with the dimmer only causes the lights to go out. For the cost of these bulbs, you would think these things would be addressed or noted so customers are aware of the limitations before spending the money. That being said, the colors can be fun but I think the novelty will wear off really quickly and it's hard to justify the cost solely based on novelty and especially based on the bulb limitations.

    Returned

    • Written by from SAN FRANCISCO

I tried this product for a few weeks then returned it. The bulbs themselves are very nice, and I had no issues with connectivity. It's the software that is horrible. Actually, it's not so much the implementation of the software (it works) as the conception (dumb idea). Philips has taken what could be a genuinely useful product and turned it into something cute. I really don't want a blue or red light on in my room. I could care less about matching the color of my shirt. I would like useful ability to control the lighting in my home remotely. The software implements that horribly. The timer function is ridiculous - no ability to set a schedule? What idiot decided that all has to be done manually every day? If Philips sorts out the software and implements a better timer / remote functionality, I may buy it again; in the meantime this is just an expensive and not particularly fun toy.

    Love em

    • Written by from Fairfax

Just got these and they are extremely cool. If you are a light person, who is extremely particular about your lighting, these are a must buy. If you just like cool gadgets, then they might be a bit pricey for you. The app works pretty good, although it's obviously lacking a few features and some features seem to be half broken, but it does everything you really need right out of the box, complete color control, saving presets, alarm timers. Expect improvements as they are releasing the SDK to be used by any developer.

One of the most important features about these is they can be used as regular bulbs, if you switch the light off, then back on again, it resets to a default value that seems to mimic what I would consider a standard bulb, putting out plenty of light with a very slight yellow shade to it. No need to use your phone every time you need to turn the lights on and off.

A feature which seemed like a gimmick at first but I've really fallen in love with is the ability to take a photo with your phone, then use the droppers to select colors for each of the lights from the photo. Seems kind of pointless at first, but once you have a preset named after your cat, that glows in his colors, or a preset of your house plant, it really starts to feel like magic.

And the final thing to note, is how unbelievably easy the setup is. Plug everything in, download the app, press a button, and that's it.

    Truly cool

    • Written by from SAN ANTONIO

This product was extremely easy to set up and install. It changes the feel of a room pretty quickly. It is pricey, but to be able to control 50 bulbs is pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to our next movie night where I can match the lights to the mood of the movie.

cool bulbs, but the app is really awful

    • Written by from El Prado

Easy to set up the hardware, but the app which controls the bulbs is a piece of junk. It's overly complex with cutesy scenes which allow you to pluck colors and assign them to bulbs. Big problems with basic functionality: the timers don't work reliably, the app forgets bulbs and color assignments you've made and supposedly saved, and on and on. The product really isn't ready for primetime with an app that's such a piece of garbage.

    INCREDIBLE PRODUCT

    • Written by from Elm Grove

Whoever came up with this is a genius! Basically you put in as many light sources as you want (anything that will take a standard bulb) plug in the base station to your router, then have incredible fun painting your room with light!

I'm telling you this is awesome. Expensive...but awesome.

You can program each light individually, gang some or all of them together, and create amazing light patterns in your home.

The neatest feature, is you can select colors from your own photography! I used a picture of sushi from my honeymoon, and created an amazing light pattern! My wife loved it!

It's also really easy to use multiple iphones / ipads to control it, so everyone in the family can participate!

Seriously, this is expensive, but really worth it if you like having different light patterns in your home.

Great but needs a bit more features

    • Written by from reseda

Setup was quick and easy. Control is instant and the color and light output is great. The app takes a bit of learning, and is pretty basic right now. Looks like pairing of bulbs or areas together can only be done if you setup a preset that you program. Hard to figure out what bulb you are controlling outside of a preset, would be nice if you could just tap a bulb or bulbs then a preset, color or global control for them, as well as define pairs or groups ahead of time. My biggest disappointment is no way to set the default color and output when they are turned on with a switch, right now it resets and defaults to a very warm light. Would be awesome if you could program what setting they go to when powered on via switch, including an option for them to go to the last used. Other people in the house don't use an app to turn the lights on/off so when the switch is used it defaults back to the warm light and you have to power up the app and reset it back to what you want every time if a switch is used. Looking forward to some improvements in the control and what 3rd party developers come up with.

Do not buy if you plan on scheduling on/off for more than one time.

    • Written by from Calgary

I was under the impression that I could schedule the features of these bulbs, on/off, color and hue changes, etc.

This is not the case, a schedule only works once and then has to be reset. So if you need to regularly turn lights on/off so your home looks occupied this is not for you.

They do work well if you don't need scheduling, however for my purpose they don't work and I returned them.

This is a really amazing product...

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

I don't want to rehash all the positive reviews I've already read but it is an amazing 1.0 product. Some suggestions:

    - Integrate with Passbook so the app show's up on my screen when I'm at home
    - Sell further accessories. Maybe a wireless light switch to control them the old fashion way.

Anyway, coolest product I've tried in a long time. Truly innovative and game changing in it's space.

    • Written by from Royersford

The Philips Hue is incredible. The video that is on the main site shows exactly what these marvels do in all their glory. I do have to contact Philips though as one bulb has malfunctioned OOB. Please don't let that stop you from purchasing as I will be adding more lights soon. The lights are very bright and will be an adequate replacement.

    Very cool and fun!

    • Written by from Austin

Yeah, it's a bit more expensive than I would like it to be, but when compared to similar products on the market, it's set at a reasonable price and has more features than other available products. The Hue is also much more attractive than competing products and the build quality is top notch. Our bedroom is always beautifully lit and I look forward to setting a great mood in the living room for halloween trick-or-treaters this year.

The free iPhone app is easy to use and very robust. I've submitted new feature requests and the ones already hinted at in the press (proximity state changes esp) sound great. An open-source API to be released soon will make this the perfect geek toy. I look forward to the in-room ambience effects app authors will come up with.

In summary: The Hue was well worth the cost and is highly recommended.

    Incredible Technology

    • Written by from Housatonic

Bought the starter kit today; have connected the bulbs and hub; truly a unique experience that leaves you with a sense of wonder. The app is a good start, though there needs to be a way to save custom light settings one creates manually without needing to point to a picture.

    Otherwise, great product!
