Great Hardware, Portal and Bridge Software are a Mess

    • Written by from La Grange

Flawless local and remote control of these lights through my z-wave home automation system (Veralite controlled through Homewave App on iPhone). The lights themselves are flexible and produce high quality output.
The Philips portal and bridge link software produces constant connection errors and doesn't work consistently for anything beyond playing around changing light colors. Philips color control through mousing over photos is bizarre.
Don't buy these lights believing that Philips portal software will provide useful and reliable automation functions.

Great as an early adopter product

    • Written by from Foster City

Yes, they are expensive, not as bright as one may like and the app has room for improvement. But its also a fantastic new concept not available anywhere else. I wired the living room with 10 lights and use a 3rd party app (Ambify) to make them pulse to music. The effect is awesome and great every time there is a party or a playdate in the house.

    Wildcard!

    • Written by from Park Ridge

Works sometimes... A nice novelty that you should never rely upon. Can't get it to work at all tonight but it is kind of cool the 40-50% of the time it actually connects with your network. Tonight it won't work for me, but when it does, it is almost worth the hundreds of $ I've spend on special bulbs! When it does actually work, when it chooses to on certain days...it is cool thought!

    NEAT!

Great product, my European friends have had LED colored lights for years and was always envious.. now this is a step ahead of those. I do wish the app was more robust however.

    Needs recurring scene schedules

    • Written by from Smyrna

Bought starter kit. Explored features. I don't have a need for colors, but I find different qualities of white to be useful. Would buy additional bulbs if schedules automatically recurred and could vary by weekday / weekend. I personally would prefer a list or grid format rather than individual icons for each scene / schedule.

Great concept, but not enough lumens

    • Written by from Billerica

I installed these in my TV room (20x25') and they are just too dim to fill the space with enough light to, for example, simulate a bright sunny day on a beach, even at their brightest. Otherwise the product works as advertised. I will wait until 75W equivalent (or higher) bulbs become available before expanding my system.

The best innovation since the lightbulb

    • Written by from Weehawken

The HUE is the best innovation since the invention of the light bulb. Try this in your favorite room, set an atmosphere and almost immediately you feel the difference. Who knew that subtle lighting, both color and intensity, could have such an emotional impact? I am not saying that this is the same as therapy or a spa, but one does react with HUE more than I would have imagined. The light is also bright when you need it for specific tasks. Yes it seems pricy, but it is worth it. Other pluses are the bulb should last much longer than other light options, it uses less power, illuminates more and no harmful contents like mercury.

    A Bright Idea...

    • Written by from Cupertino

Admittedly I was a skeptic about the value of Hue when it first appeared on the Apple Store shelves. At first it just seemed like another overpriced App Enabled accessory to line the shelves for consumers obsessed with the latest iOS device.

But a couple persistent co-workers convinced me to take a closer look at Hue and I began to realize Hue was more than a cut above the clutter of other accessories. Hue actually impacted my day to day life!

Like other home automation accessories I can set my lights on a timer or turn them on for security before I arrived home at night. But Hue took it a step further. I can customize my bedroom lighting to relax my tired eyes after a long day or energize me in the morning. As my mood changed I experimented with more light patterns.

Overall its one of the best purchases I've made in a long time and worth the price. It will change the way you see light in your home.

    Note on pairing bulbs

    • Written by from Mountain View

Just a quick note ... to pair new bulbs or re-pair existing ones, you must have the bulb you want to pair in direct physical proximity to the controller. Within a foot is best. Only then will using the app to find new bulbs work. You may also have to press the button on the controller, although that seems to be hit or miss.

Once you complete the pairing, you can move the newly paired bulb to the edges of your mesh network of bulbs.

Just wanted to save anyone else trying to use these bulbs the confusion I went through.

Great hardware, but the software and instructions need a lot of work.

    Stay away from it!!

    • Written by from St. Louis

They don't work... Some lights connect some don't. They turn on and off randomly. Worst of all as the complaints start to pile up Philips seems not to care. No updates, no ideas, no fixes, just don't care. They got us to drop the cash, know they're on to the next disaster. I've got 8 bulbs to sell... Cheap!

    Awesome when it works!

    • Written by from Mississauga

I got this in Decemeber 2013, and it was hard to set up. I had a ton of issues. A few months later, this thing won't work. And, there's no support online. Avoid this product - it makes lighting way too complicated. Keep it simple!

    Not just a gimmick

    • Written by from London

Bought the pack of light to give them a try in our living room, 20 foot ceiling with pot lights, got the ladder and installed, plugged the hub in and downloaded the app, 5 mins, no looking for my server, no passwords, a true plug and play, the colours are vivid and bright, tried a music app, it's was a hit with my 14 year old, thought I was going to have a stroke.
Now looking to buy more lights for the theatre room, will be a very nice touch, 15000hr life, hope I don't have to get the ladder in the house anytime soon

    Exceeded My Expectations

    • Written by from Albuquerque

I purchased these ahead of a house party we were having and although expensive, I am more than pleased with them! It was definitely a conversation piece, and the lights really set the mood whether we wanted to have fun or just relax. The stock app is fun to play with, but I came across an app called Goldee that controls and changes the color schemes dynamically. They have different themes, such as 'concentrate', 'relax', 'romantic', and the lights will subtly change colors from one to the other. It really transforms the room!

It works flawlessly as well. As much as I've played with these lights, turned them off and on, changed colors, etc., I have not experienced any flaws in their operation. As long as my wifi is running, my lights can be controlled with my phone.

My wife was a little adverse to the lights at first because you control them from your phone, but I explained to her she can turn the lightswitch off and on and it will behave like any normal lightbulb. I got her the app on her phone as well, and she can control and play with them too!

    Lighting I would recommend.

    • Written by from Austin

I've owned this starter pack for over a year now and I can confidently say that I would recommend this lighting to any of my buddies. I've used it for everyday use in my bedroom and while it has its quirks I'll list, it has been the best companion.

First quirk is that if the power goes off the light come on full brightness when power is restored which is frustrating during some storms at night. Second is the companion app is much improved over when I first had it but its still not perfect with instant on but that might apse be due to my bridge being down stairs with the router.

Other than those two issues that pop up rarely I've used these for at least a year if not longer and I have used them every single day in my bedroom and I've loved having the ability to control the lighting for my mood and controlling the brightness depending on my task at hand. Philips keeps up with the app on a fairly regular basis adding new features and fixing bugs which is nice to have continued support. The only feature I don't use is the geo location because I'd rather not have my lights turn on when I arrive home during the day which its not hard to pull out my phone.

    Amazing Product!

    • Written by from San Jose

This is one of my favorite tech items. Setting up the lights just took a few minutes. The possibilities for this are endless. It is an expensive item, but the electrical savings will pay for itself down the road. You can have a lot of fun while reducing your carbon footprint. :-)

There are plenty of third-party apps that work great with the Hue lights. My favorite right now is "Hue Lights." If you are a techie, you can also use the Hue API to create limitless schedules, events, and light shows from your own server.

A lot of people posted YouTube videos, so you can see these in action. The Hue Lightstrips are a great addition to the Starter Pack. They can really transform a room!

    Good Product, A Few Caveats

    • Written by from Lake Zurich

I've had a Hue starter pack for about a month now. The infinitely adjustable colors and ability to draw color schemes from photos, digital artwork, etc allows me to create unique illumination patterns, in addition to the pre-set ones on the app. Since I don't have smart home functionality yet, the ability to set timers, schedules and turn the lights on remotely for my greyhounds has been useful as well.

The bulbs themselves are only rated at 600 lumens, which is adequate for rooms such as a bedroom or den but could be too dim if used in larger rooms or main living areas. My wireless router (previous-gen Airport Extreme base station, dual band N) seems to slow down when the Hue system is active (when an iOS device is connected to the Hue bridge). Multiple tests with Speedtest.net have confirmed this observed drop in speed. The "bridge" that controls the Hue lamps must also be connected to a wireless router via a network cable to function.

Overall, the Hue system has been great for its novelty as well as practical features. I'll probably wait to add more bulbs until they're cheaper and at least 60w equivalents (800 lm) are offered.

    Awesome Light Package

    • Written by from EAST STROUDSBURG

Purchased the Starter Set yesterday. Set it up this evening and had everything running in a few minutes. Setup app on my Wife's phone, Son's phone and a couple of iPads. Even was able to share custom settings to all 5 controllers. It was very intuitive and not hard at all to setup. We made a custom "Halloween" setting and surprised our Granddaughter when she came upstairs from watching a movie. Can't wait to get more bulbs and do more "light" designing! I highly recommend this product. Lots of fun.

    Disastrously buggy software

    • Written by from San Francisco

I actually really like this product. It's fun and useful. The hardware is great. The software is another story. It's so astoundingly buggy it's amazing it's actually a shipping product. Scenes edited on one device disappear on another device. Edits made on one device will update the bridge, but then won't synchronize to the other device. A scene started by an alarm will leave a bulb dark, whereas manually selecting the scene will turn it on. I just hit the "All Off" button on my iPhone, which not only turned off all the lights but also deleted the current scene off all my devices. Trying to restore it deleted all the OTHER scenes.

So, even though this review has sort of a "Aside from the shooting, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?" feel to it, hue really is a nice product (aside from the childishly inept software). Fortunately, it's easier to fix software problems in the field than hardware problems.

    Great idea, poor execution...

    • Written by from HAYMARKET

The system and app software are buggy and unreliable. Alarms and timers don't work reliably and lighting levels often don't engage to the same level each time a program executes. Philips has a great idea here but it's not ready for prime time, particularly at the current price tag. Bottom line--it's not a system that works reliably enough to augment your home security plan by having lights turn on and off reliably while traveling.

Outstanding Product - Easy Set-up and Use!

    • Written by from Spokane

The product worked perfectly with 5 minutes set-up. The iOS apps are fast and reliable. The lights are bright and operate at a cool temperature. The timed on and off feature via the Philips web site works equally well. It is possible to use two or more starter pack bulbs together for a total of 6 or more bulbs. Google for the small OSX program based on the Philips API. Impressive product!
