I can't wait for the third party apps

    • Written by from Chicago

The Hue so far has been even better than I anticipated. As my apartment doesn't get direct sunlight, it has been amazing to wake up to a sunrise or the Energize setting. I think these lights are going to be able to do some pretty amazing things once developers start making apps for them. And while each light bulb is expected to last up to 15 years, I think this little piece of home automation is well worth the money.

Slick, easy-to-use, but not a true RGB bulb

    • Written by from Santa Clara

I really liked Hue's easy smartphone control and reliable wireless operation. The bulbs were a disappointment to me because they are optimized for generating white light in different color temperatures. The result is washed-out very dim greens and blues rather than the bright saturated light in any color that a true RGB bulb would generate. However, reds are strong, and the white looks good and does warm and cool color temperatures perfectly, and as I mentioned before, the dimming, iOS app and wireless operation are very nice.

    Very Pleased!

    • Written by from Loma Linda

Setup was so simple. The versatile nature of the lights will enhance any setting from family dinner time, to watching a great movie, to reading, to relaxing. I purchased the starter kit, one additional HUE bulb and the Friends of Hue Bloom lamp. Then I took it a step further and picked up some Belkin WeMo switches and pulled everything together with IF This Then That (IFTTT) and the results are nothing short of spectacular! Want to trigger a HUE sunset at sunset? No problem there's a IFTTT recipe for that. Want a repeating schedule for any light no matter if it's HUE or connected to a WeMo? No problem there's a IFTTT recipe for that. Want to geofence your lighting behaviors? WeMo's got you covered. I now control the lighting in every room of the house from my IOS device, and while I have HUE presently in our living area, I will certainly be expanding this in the very near future. Do not limit yourself by not taking advantage of the IFTTT abilities. Be warned it's all very addicting.

    Darned Awesome

    • Written by from MONTEREY

Although when I originally purchased this item I was quite upset by the fact that I could not use it to set a permanent program of on/off (when I travel it's important that home patterns not be interrupted), the latest software update fixed all that and I truly appreciate this product. Said latest update includes features such as "randomize" and also allows the user to set days as well as times for lighting. The incredible range of light "recipes" combined with the ability to set alarms (replacing those plug-in timers with vastly improved to-the-second reliability) makes this a worthy addition to one's home.

I have, however, experienced issues whilst simultaneously using the app on both iPhone and iPad. Once I deleted the app on one device it was fine.

Great New Electronic Product For My Home

    • Written by from BRANDON

I heard Leo Laportte (The Tech Guy) talking about the Apple/Phillips Hue. Without delay, I read about it and the many tech reviews. In short, I purchased one from the Apple Store; drove to my local Apple Store in Madison, MS; installed it in less than 10 minutes; and the family loves it. My only minor problem was I did not have a spare LAN slot on my router (all four already in use. That was easy to solve. My home is "greener" than ever now.

Very Pleased Good value and performance!

    • Written by from BALTIMORE

Not a problem at all. My house is super complex electronically. I have used home automation for 20 or so years. From X10) to ZWAVE . Many 2.4 devices with Zwave internet remote locks. It all works. If I was willing to replace all my new Lprize bulbs - it would really add to the lighting environment in my home. I will be happy with 3 or so bulbs for now. The price of the individual bulbs needs to be around $30.00 for it to become a success. This system uses the Zigbee protocol.

There is another plus in that the internet control is free -- there is no monthly charge as is the case with many other systems - Philips does not charge for this. My 6 year old grandchild was able to access the more advanced featured of the app within 5 minutes of use on my Ipad without any adult help. It has great potential for advanced home or office lighting.

    Great Bulb, Lame App

    • Written by from San Diego

I would give the bulb 5 stars, but the app 1 star.

The App loses all its scenes and needs to be reset to mostly recover its mind, but re-downloaded to fully recover. The process of moving a scene from page to page can confuse it. It's a poor remote control, at best, in its current form.

The bulb seems solid and I hope the software will mature to provide better support and automation. Maybe 3rd parties will be allowed to provide a decent app, maybe a "disco" mode to play to my music...

Awesome Product — Software Needs Improvement—Obvious Capability Overlooked

    • Written by from Lake Worth

    Awesome Product in General:
This product so intrigued me that I purchased it a few days after first seeing it in the Apple Store. I found set up quite easy and had purchased three additional bulbs for a six-light system. In general this is an awesome product but the software screams for improvement.

    Main Software Failing:
The most obvious expected use—to light an environment and have it fade through various colors in sequence over time—has been completely overlooked in the app. It appears that this is supposed to be handled by the timers but when setting up a timer in a "scene" there's no provision to have it go to the next scene. This is made worse by the fact that the timers do not work anyway. (And I have downloaded the version 1.1 software update.)

    Application Suggestion:
There should be a feature allowing multiple scenes to be arranged along a timeline and then saved like a movie. Running the timeline on a loop would create fade between scenes for constant color (and mood) shift within the environment. This capability is such a no-brainer that Philips software designers must be working on it for the next update. I'd be very surprised if they are not. Philips do you copy?

    Bugs and Nits:
I agree with a number of the complaints in other reviews: script font is silly, deleted scenes reappear, scenes duplicate themselves, scene arrangement changes, frequent connection error messages, turning on and off at wall switch reverts lights to default, bulbs do not do blue very well, etc...

    On a positive note:
Alarms do work and I have successfully set up a recurring daily lighting event.

    Commercial Potential:
Let me reiterate that in general this is an awesome product with great potential. I am considering using it professionally to light a museum exhibit. It could be a great low-cost solution for dynamic lighting design with a few obviously needed software improvements.

AWESOME! Bought the starter-set it up-ordered ten more bulbs!

    • Written by from Marblehead

Fantastic! Put the first three bulbs into recessed lighting and fell in love. Easy set up, yea, the app could do more, but so relaxing! immediately bought ten more bulbs, I own an A-Frame home and this was a true delight. Read the reviews and was seriously concerned about brightness, not a problem at all! i actually had to dim some of the pre-sets. i cant wait until the rest arrive!

    • Written by from SAVANNAH

I love these things ... not really sure what all of the complaints are about?! But that's okay, as I've had great luck with my order (starter kit and three extra bulbs)! The colors, the intensity, the mood setting, the movement, the illumination, and the app: all are TOP of the line for me! NO complaints here! Just follow the little wheel on the inside packaging for simple instructions to get 'em fired up!

Love this product! App needs a *little* work

    • Written by from Milwaukee

I had my eye on these bulbs for about two months and finally bit the bullet to purchase them after seeing an article/video clip in the Wall Street Journal about Phillips redoing the lighting for the Empire State Building in LEDs (its pretty amazing).

Now I have an empire state of mind for lighting in my apartment. I love this product. Right out of the box I was like, "I don't know about these.." But once you play with them a bit and figure out how to set the mood for different situations, you'll never go back. I've always been picky about lighting and for the past two months I had been wishing I could turn all my lights off at night without leaving my warm, comfy bed. Phillips took care of my pickiness and my laziness. The concentrate setting works great for studying, the relax setting is amazing for chilling out and, well, relaxing. And those are just two Phillips recipes. If you buy these, check out blue rain at night with your girl -maybe after throwing a party with your friends in the Deep Sea setting over some Clapton and Zeppelin, eh? The possibilities are endless.

My only complaint is that the app is a little shaky sometimes. I'll be reviewing the app in the app store so the developers can get to it.

4/5 because Phillips shouldn't have partnered with novice app developers.

    Nice

    • Written by from Tucson

Pleased with the brightness...50w is a reasonable estimate. .I did have to use the IP address, auto find did not work for me. One bulb turns on slower than others and seems to have a slightly different color (could be led color bin or a defect, I will replace under warranty...note: have four bulbs,,,the one that is different was in the starter pack, not the single purchase). Software issue with the fade on and off...just does not work, sure they will get it figured out. I did try many different ways...was looking for a work around or cause. I have not tried the Internet interface for the fade, only iPad app.

Fantasti product with huge potential. App needs some more features

    • Written by from Bloomington

I got the starter pack and immediately popped them in. No issues with setup on either my local lan or remote access. Used multiple iOS devices without any issues. The light is very pleasing. Another 100-200 lumens would be very welcome, but they're good for accent lighting.

A few nits or feature requests that are probably easy to add to the app down the road:

    - ability to set a regular schedule. I haven't tested this yet, but the website indicates that you can only schedule up to 24 hours out, then you have to set it again. Makes an alarm a bit difficult.

    - A default setting other than white.

    - Grouping is a bit confusing. An interface more akin to the way Sonos handles multiple speakers would be better.

    - The ability to do other gradual dimming or lighting in intervals other than 3 and 9 minutes.

    - The ability to define favorite colors to jump to when creating a lighting scheme or recipe. I realize recipes save state, but there i expect there will be times when I want to manually just move between a preset palette.

    - Alerts when a light has been left on for longer than a certain threshold during a certain window. (e.g. why is this light on when the sun rose two hours ago?)

On the hardware side, a few more wishlist items:

    - More lightbulb sizes! I want these in sconces and fans!

    - A wall switch replacement that keeps the power on, but signals the shut off instead.

    Amazing Product!

    • Written by from San Jose

This is one of my favorite tech items. Setting up the lights just took a few minutes. The possibilities for this are endless. It is an expensive item, but the electrical savings will pay for itself down the road. You can have a lot of fun while reducing your carbon footprint. :-)

There are plenty of third-party apps that work great with the Hue lights. My favorite right now is "Hue Lights." If you are a techie, you can also use the Hue API to create limitless schedules, events, and light shows from your own server.

A lot of people posted YouTube videos, so you can see these in action. The Hue Lightstrips are a great addition to the Starter Pack. They can really transform a room!

    Great Product but Flawed App

    • Written by from WHITEHALL

The Hue Starter pack of 3 bulbs and the bridge worked perfectly. The two extra bulbs were recognized by the app and were named etc, etc. However, when scenes were selected in the app, the two extra bulbs in the next room did not respond. They did respond to the slider controls in the app and did turn off and turn on using the slider controls. Curiously, the Philips Hue Community website (which can recognize one's Hue bridge/hardware) had scenes created by people which, when selected, worked perfectly with my bulbs. Therefore, the app is terrible and needs work but the Hue lighting system is wonderful and worth the money.

    Nice Bulbs, Terrible App

    • Written by from INDIANAPOLIS

I think it's really nice that you can change the shade of the bulbs and the color (not that I really do much of that) and that you can do so from your iPad or iPhone.

    That said, that's about it.

The app is terrible. It took me two days just to find out how to set up the app to automatically turn on when I come home. And then it didn't work.

So then I thought I'd try out the alarm feature and wake up to light and not a beeping alarm. It didn't work either. (Good thing I set my regular alarm as back up.)

Also my house is only about 1,500 square feet and I can only use the bulbs in the rooms that are less than one room away from my wifi set up (which the Hue's "bridge" needs to be connected to.)

I was sold on the concept, and all the neat things that were promised. I even went out and bought 2 extra bulbs because I wanted all these options all over the house (which is when I found out I can't use them if I get too far away from the "bridge")

But in the end what I ended up with was 5 $60 LED light bulbs - and the "bridge."

Not sure if I'm having these problems because I try and operate the system from two different iPads and one iPhone, but if thee's a way to coordinate all those devices together it's buried so far down in the app that I'll probably never find it.

Not bright enough and app is horrible and not user friendly. Works Harmony

    • Written by from Dedham

I purchased these yesterday from the Apple store and saw reviews about the brightness factor of these bulbs but ignored it. I switched out my 75 and 100 watt bulbs for these and noticed instantly that the room got darker and these bulbs are very dim. I want to say they are equivalent to 60 watt bulbs. The changing color modes is pretty cool and you can go from cool to warm and various colors and blends. The app on the iPhone is horrible and not user friendly in my eyes. It takes lots of stumbling around to find what you need and the timer settings keep telling me my bridge needs updating even though I am using the latest updates. The color blending is okay but unless you want your rooms to be red and blue etc, there is no usefulness to this. I have yet to try this turning lights on prior to coming home. The app keeps telling me I need to be connected to Wifi and kicks me over to the Phillips website. The one thing I do like is that this is configured to my Harmony Ultimate Remote. Using the remote I can set up activities to turn on with the lights at the same time plus I can adjust brightness and tone setting etc. That to me was great. However the bulbs are so very dim, not sure I can highly recommend this to anyone if they want to light up a large room. The email and Facebook and Instagram signaling via the bulbs was a pretty cool factor but I know I would never use it. In all these bulbs are just okay and need work to make them a brighter bulb for the consumer.
