    Awesome!

    Right, firstly the App could do with some work. Mostly intuitive but some basics like setting the timers are very unclear. Tip - you just need to double tap to reset the alarm.

    Other than that the product is awesome.

    Aside from the geekery of the thing I was most amazed is that almost no perceptible heat comes from the bulb. After an hour or so they are just slightly warm to the touch. They must be incredibly efficient.

    But above all this is totally cool. It may be a stretch to pay for them at $60 a bulb but I am sure costs will be recovered over time. But these are LED bulbs with wireless built in, how cool it that???!!!

    I find my self laughing every time I turn on and off the lights.

    Just what I've been looking for!

    I have seriously been waiting for years for something like this to hit the markets. I don't like audible alarms at all because they tear me out of sleep violently and I feel grumpy the rest of the day. I also haven't been very happy with instant-on lighting solutions because there's so much light so fast. The Hue Connected Bulb Starter Pack comes with everything you need to 'wake up with the sun' (you can dim the lights from dark to full brightness over 3 or 9 minutes), even at 4:30am during winter in a room with no windows! In addition, the diversity of color options means that if you want to do any creative lighting for photography purposes you can do it without dealing with filters or gels.

    I give this product 4 stars rather than 5 primarily because the App that you use to program the bulbs could use a little work. If nothing else, I did not find it intuitive that to set up the dimming function I had to create a new 'light recipe' (who picked that name? And why not a simple 'alarm' setting that is independent of other recipes?). Also, I generally have to reset my wake-up 'recipe' each night before bed, which I find disappointing; I feel I should at least have the option of setting up light recipes that automatically trigger on weekdays (early wakeup) and weekends (late wakeup). The price is also a bit steep and it would be nice to see a higher-power bulb in the future (1000+ lumens), but these are still my favorite light bulb of all time. I would replace every light in my house with these if I had the money. Highly recommended if you can afford them!

    not enough light

    I replaced 3 700 lumen CFLs with 3 Hue 600 Lumen bulbs. The ability to change colors was great but there was not enough light to read comfortably so I am returning them. When they have brighter bulbs I would buy it.

    this product is great i absolutely recommend for anyone thinking of buying.
    the only reason i don not git if 5 stars if because of the price and the app.
    the app needs work and more features, and 150 sounds more reasonable price.
    the bulb could also have a better price at 40dllrs

    Bridge connectivity not stable

    First the good news: when the bulbs are connected to the bridge, you can control them any way you want. The light is bright, and doesn't look like an LED.
    I wonder if I am the only one who has this problem, but the bridge disconnects from the internet and the bulbs intermittently, sometimes several times a day, sometimes it runs w/o problems for some days. Only power cycle helps, and no, a complete reset doesn't work.
    Timer: until now the system is not reliable at all.
    APP: sometimes it works well, sometimes it cannot connect to the bridge ort the internet even though all three blue lights are on.
    No support link on their homepage.

    Not ready for prime time...unable to add additional bulbs

    I purchased the starter pack (3 bulbs) and it was fantastic. So much so, that I purchased 4 additional bulbs for another room. I have attempted to add the additional bulbs to my bridge to no avail. I went so far as to plug the bulbs into a light socket NEXT to the bridge and try to get the system to find them using the search function on the iPhone App. No luck. I think there must be a bug as I have been unable to get it to work with more than 3 bulbs. On the verge of returning this, which is unfortunate, because this would be an amazing product if it worked.

    Great concept, awesome product, dreadful app

    Just adding my 2 cents and agreeing with many.

    The good
    Very easy setup. Had this working in about 5 minutes.
    Lighting from bulbs is gorgeous - changing colors is really fun.
    Setting up localized lighting within a room is something to behold
    Overall it's good value

    The bad
    The app is terrible - badly designed and very frustrating
    You can't change colors of more than 1 bulb simultaneously
    The timer is crude and almost useless
    The app does not allow you to manage individual rooms

    The future
    This system will take off when we get some 3rd part apps
    Potential is amazing
    We need some spotlight bulbs
    Would love to see a 75w power rated bulb versus current 50

    Lame App, Cool Lights

    Only two stars, due to the lame App. Lights are great. Hopefully they will release brighter one in the future, but these are fine. The App is the worse, really. You need to use the App to control these lights, so the App is a big part of the "experience." The App is clunky, non-intuitive and very lame. It'll drive you nuts. Hard to tell at-a-glance if a light is on, and what color it is -- you have to dig into the App some. Sort of difficult to do real basic things. You can not, via timer, turn on lights, then brighten or change colors at a certain time, then dim, etc. Only on and off. Phillips needs to redo the App. I wonder if any of the App makers actually have these lights in their own homes? Seriously, use this App in a real environment once, and you'll be able to figure out how to make it better. Grandma and Grandpa should be able to "turn on lamp by couch, and make it green" in a second -- and they can not. They will need to dig around. Ugh. Other than that, the lights are cool, the App is so freaking lame.

    Junk ripoff

    Bought a starter kit from an Apple Store. At first it worked great but now it can not properly run the last bulb in my bedroom. Stupid me. It tells me the bulbs are not reachable yet it will change color but will not turn the bulb completely off. The program was recently updated yet even using the "all off"" button no longer works. Rebooted my iPad and restarted the App and still would not work properly. Base unit I less than 24' away. Giant rip off. Kit is a terrible joke on me for trying to support what appeared to be a great effort. Don't waste your money.

    Great Idea But, everyone that I know seems to have issues

    Only made for indoor use, and with a single day program not a full month or even week long program. (Meaning you will have to set the time each day) if you desire different timing each day. You can not program it for a 30-day duration.

    - Great Idea but not to much thought went into it.

    Bring it back. it's not worth the headache...

    Truly horrible execution of a fantastic idea

    I jumped at the opportunity to purchase 10 of these bulbs and the accompanying "bridge" to control them. Eagerly set up all of the lights, layer with the fantastic array of color possibilities, set up schedules and then stood back waiting for my lights to come on and off, fading in and out, illuminating this room at this time and another room at another time...and then...reality smashed the dream. The software does not work as advertised. I does not hold the programs. The lights do not come on and off as programmed. The fade in and does not work. It takes forever t login remotely and turn the lights on and off from, whatever place you happen be in. DO NOT BUY THESE LIGHTS UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE TIME WITH THEM DAILY!

    No fade in or fade out

    Overall the product isn't bad but it has 2 big problems:

    1 - It doesn't fade in / fade out. Simply switch on or off! To switch lights out and on a timer can do it for less money. The advertisement video clearly shows it, but after several attempts I couldn't do it.

    2 - doesn't memorize the alarm, you have to set it each day, again the timer does a better job that this system.

    I leave also a suggestion, integration with iCloud to avoid the double work of doing the same light scenes on several devices

    Timer work?

    hi everybody, pretty much same review, great lights, not so great software, bad app.

    but, I cannot get the timer to work either on or off. no matter what I selecrt, 3 or 9 minute fade in or out they come on fully bright or shutoff right away,

    Any ideas??

    Great Product, Excellent Light (and Plenty of it)

    I'm not sure where the reviews about "Not enough light" are coming from. The lights put out more than enough light to fill a room. I have four of them in about a 10 x 10 foot office, and only during the day are the lights on full strength. At night they are always dimmed in one way or another.

    For high ceilings, this may be an issue. But for regular rooms they are just fine. Don't be afraid of people who seem to not have enough light. I read all the time for my work--constantly. I do have an elbow spotlamp on my desk for direct reading at night but I always needed that, even with traditional bulbs.

    I'm giving this product 5 starts to open, because for an EARLY ADOPTION product it is excellent. We have a solid wifi connection and have none of the delay issues many have reported. A good wifi connection is key. The app and the options really need to be improved over time, but that is expected and I'll amend my review as needed if they don't keep pace.

    Finally, they do need to get better about the bases, labeling, and adding zones to groups of bulbs. This product would be a bad mature product if these were not addressed. That said, we're still in the early adoption phase and so far they have heavily exceeded expectations with a beautiful, useful, and imaginative product. Gone are the ugly CF lights and hot incandescent lights that bugged me for years. I can hardly imagine going back to just regular bulbs at this point. It would be like going back to black and white TV.

    Fantastic

    I can't think of any praise that hasn't already been given, so I'll speak to a couple of the criticisms here that a Philips engineer spoke to in a differrent forum. The lights don't go dimmer because that would change their color and Philips wants the colors to stay accurate at all brightnesses. The green is more of a lime green so it's not a true red/blue/green light. This was done to give the beautiful whites produced by the lights.

    The software is admittely "basic" but more functionality is on the way and there are already two third-party apps in the App Store with more to come. Developers are writing scripts and web-based apps that run from your Mac or PC to control the lights.

    Compared to "normal" high end LED lights, the price is over double but that's like comparing a butter knife to a food processor. All LED lights are very efficient and the amount of electricity costs you save from the moment you turn them on recoups the purchase price (how quickly depends on how much your electricity costs, but one estimate is saving $65US per year). Then multiply that times the 22 or more years they will last. And don't forget the cost of the incandescent bulbs that burn out. They are cheap but think of how many you will buy over 22 years. That alone chews up a majority of the cost of one of these LED bulbs.

    Can you tell I like them? :) The kids do too. They love changing the colors and I bought the disco app. It sounds excessive to change the lights, but being able to turn them on/off from another room and to dim them when we're watching a movie or crank them up when we're putting a puzzle together is very cool. Right now my daughter is pretending to sleep and all the lights are very dark/dim blue to simulate night.

    I wrote a little script that sets the lights to green and red (for the holidays). Every minute they change to the other color (alternating between green and red). Good silly fun.

    Don't Waste Your Time on this Product!

    I purchased the starter set with 2 extra bulbs. Like the other customers, hardware works great, but the App is horrible. It is not intuitive, unstable, not reliable, and when you try to sync across multiple devices, it gets even more complicated. The bottom line is that I was led to believe that I was purchasing a system, not just light bulbs.

    I spent two days trying to get this to work, and I will be returning them, with no support from Philips, after multiple requests.

    Really disappointed in this product. My opinion is to wait to see what their competition can do with this concept.

    Great if you don't experience stability issues

    Received these as a present. Have had them for about 3 months. Initial set up was easy. Just follow the simple steps and you will get it all set up on your home wifi. Setting it up to access outside of your home wifi is not as obvious but easy once you figure it out (best way to do so for me was to disconnect my iPhone from my home wifi and follow the prompts in the Hue app after doing so).

    Once you get it set up it works great. All in all it must have taken me less than 15 min for the full setup. I also really like the fact that if you are away from your wifi and there is an internet or power outage, once everything comes back the Hue system restarts to work without you having to do anything (which has not been my experience with other systems). This is particularly useful when you are on vacation. The app is great to play with as well and the luminosity of the lamps is great!

    So, why only three stars? Because of a well documented issue with the bridge. After a few days the connection from the bridge to the internet stopped working. Wifi still worked, so I could control the lamps from inside my wifi but not from outside of it. This is well documented online with many potential solutions that I tried and did not work. In the end, after a very frustrating couple of days, only a hard reset did the trick (deleting application, closing account and opening new one with Hue portal, resetting router, modem and hue bridge).

    It has now been working without an issue for a while, but the fact that the issue I faced is still being documented and does not seem to have a clear solution is a major problem for me as it makes it hard to know when it may stop working again.

    I still have the hue and really like it, but this uncertainty warrants a deduction of 2 starts from me.
