Truly horrible execution of a fantastic idea

I jumped at the opportunity to purchase 10 of these bulbs and the accompanying "bridge" to control them. Eagerly set up all of the lights, layer with the fantastic array of color possibilities, set up schedules and then stood back waiting for my lights to come on and off, fading in and out, illuminating this room at this time and another room at another time...and then...reality smashed the dream. The software does not work as advertised. I does not hold the programs. The lights do not come on and off as programmed. The fade in and does not work. It takes forever t login remotely and turn the lights on and off from, whatever place you happen be in. DO NOT BUY THESE LIGHTS UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE TIME WITH THEM DAILY!

the hardware is bulletproof and the lights are mind blowingly clever. the colours are amazing. however probably the worst software ever to go with it. have had to re-install the app 4 times this week, only way to make the lights re-connect. rage inducingly frustrating.

so close philips, all you had to do was spend more then 3 minutes developing the app, i am returning my lights to the store today. what a shame. low rating reflects the app not the hardware

No fade in or fade out

Overall the product isn't bad but it has 2 big problems:

1 - It doesn't fade in / fade out. Simply switch on or off! To switch lights out and on a timer can do it for less money. The advertisement video clearly shows it, but after several attempts I couldn't do it.

2 - doesn't memorize the alarm, you have to set it each day, again the timer does a better job that this system.

I leave also a suggestion, integration with iCloud to avoid the double work of doing the same light scenes on several devices

The greatest thing to happen to the light bulb since Thomas Edison. Very easy to setup and use. I hope they last long.

Works sometimes... A nice novelty that you should never rely upon. Can't get it to work at all tonight but it is kind of cool the 40-50% of the time it actually connects with your network. Tonight it won't work for me, but when it does, it is almost worth the hundreds of $ I've spend on special bulbs! When it does actually work, when it chooses to on certain days...it is cool thought!

Great New Electronic Product For My Home

I heard Leo Laportte (The Tech Guy) talking about the Apple/Phillips Hue. Without delay, I read about it and the many tech reviews. In short, I purchased one from the Apple Store; drove to my local Apple Store in Madison, MS; installed it in less than 10 minutes; and the family loves it. My only minor problem was I did not have a spare LAN slot on my router (all four already in use. That was easy to solve. My home is "greener" than ever now.

purchased it at the novi apple mall bc it looked so cool, even though they are a few flaws (software only!) there is nothing better then being able to change a room to any color you want as well as the dim. the lights look awesome in the dark!

Very cool but timer feature is horrible

Overall this product is very cool. The colors and app are great and super fun. However, one reason why I bought this product was for the "security" feature they advertise. I wanted a timer to go on at 6pm and off in the morning. Working with their tech support, you have to MANUALLY enable the timer Every day. This is ridiculous.

Great product, my European friends have had LED colored lights for years and was always envious.. now this is a step ahead of those. I do wish the app was more robust however.

    Great idea, three issues...

    • Written by from Arlington

This is another "great idea" product from a company I admire, however, after setting it all up, I'm a bit disappointed for a few reasons...

    1) Price is too high for quality of product. $200 for 3 bulbs and a LAN access point is quite high for adaptive lighting. See my reasoning in point number 2 below:
    2) Each bulb only produces 600 lumens. That's not a lot of light per bulb, the equivalent of about a 50 watt traditional light bulb. A 13-watt CFL bulb (60-watt equivalent) bulb on Amazon currently sells for $6.50 and produces 825 lumens. Compared to the standalone hue bulb price of $59, the equivalent CFL is more than 8x cheaper cost and a 38% brighter bulb.
    3) The hue iOS app needs a lot of work. The reviews are awful, and the app just isn't very user friendly and well thought out.

For these reasons, I will probably have to return this product. I do like being able to control the on/off state of my light from my iPhone/iPad, but it's just not yet worth the money. Maybe in version 2 it will be worth it, but I would need an updated app and a minimum of 800 lumens (1,100 preferred) to justify buying this.

Fade functionality doesn't work. Poor app, decent bulbs.

It's tough to give these a great review because the functionality doesn't work as advertised. You're supposed to be able to set up a timer to fade in and fade out, but all you get is instant on or instant off. The app is terrible, and anyone on here that tries to deny that probably works for Phillips or has some vested interest in this product's success. The coloring system works well and is kind of fun, so they're great if you are into constantly messing around with your lights. But the app makes this so painful, you just give up after a while. Right now, wishing I would have held off on buying these until I saw less negative reviews. Phillips still has a lot of work to do to make the software more functional. Suprising that the technology in the app is so far behind the bulb itself.

I never write reviews but after reading the reviews here I was iffy about buying these but went ahead and did so anyways. They are Great. Yes they are pricey, but what from apple isn't? You buying something that is basically one-of-a-kind and that no one else sells. Stop whining. As for the app it is a touch non-user friendly, but for the complaints that I am seeing on here they are lies. There is a color selector (Not just picture matching), its not slow (its your wifi), and people talking about ONLY Apple compatible... Look at your URL. Your on the APPLE STORE. Sorry about the rant to everyone else.

Great Product, Excellent Light (and Plenty of it)

    • Written by from Aurora

I'm not sure where the reviews about "Not enough light" are coming from. The lights put out more than enough light to fill a room. I have four of them in about a 10 x 10 foot office, and only during the day are the lights on full strength. At night they are always dimmed in one way or another.

For high ceilings, this may be an issue. But for regular rooms they are just fine. Don't be afraid of people who seem to not have enough light. I read all the time for my work--constantly. I do have an elbow spotlamp on my desk for direct reading at night but I always needed that, even with traditional bulbs.

I'm giving this product 5 starts to open, because for an EARLY ADOPTION product it is excellent. We have a solid wifi connection and have none of the delay issues many have reported. A good wifi connection is key. The app and the options really need to be improved over time, but that is expected and I'll amend my review as needed if they don't keep pace.

Finally, they do need to get better about the bases, labeling, and adding zones to groups of bulbs. This product would be a bad mature product if these were not addressed. That said, we're still in the early adoption phase and so far they have heavily exceeded expectations with a beautiful, useful, and imaginative product. Gone are the ugly CF lights and hot incandescent lights that bugged me for years. I can hardly imagine going back to just regular bulbs at this point. It would be like going back to black and white TV.

I read the reviews online and they were dead on accurate. The lights are great fun to play with and they have a full range of colors. They are not bright, about 50w. My biggest issue is I don't have an Apple device. I was using an Android and the app is still in development. No alarm, no timer and no remote connection. If you don't have an iPhone or iPad, don't bother. If you do, might be just the thing you're looking for.

A new way to light a room

    • Written by from Vancouver

10 of 12 people found this useful

I recently bought this starter pack and was quite amazed. The Phillips Hue definately introduces a number of new options to light a room.

The setup was a breeze - much easier than I expected. I had the whole thing up and running in a few minutes. The experience of creating your online account and tieing it to your home system could be made a bit more intuitive, but it is do-able.

Really love the light options available, including the programming of the times and which lights.

My only frustration with the system is it is very photo based. What I mean is that to create a scene (which is basically choosing which lights are used and what colours) you have to select a photo. I can understand why because they want to help you re-create a scene; however, if you are wanting to do something like have lights a certain group of colours for a party, etc., you first have to find a photo that has those colours in it. If you could simply choose, if you wanted, to see a RYG colour wheel and choose the colours that would make it easier to program too.

Just picked Hue up a week ago and we love it. Installation and setup on our devices and iMac was a breeze. The color/lighting combinations are fantastic and endless. We will be expanding from the living room and kitchen into the study and bathroom. Would recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade to LED lighting in the home.

Cool, mostly well done, but expensive

I had this setup for a couple weeks before deciding to return them. Setup was pretty easy, everything worked as advertised. In general i just cant see spending the $$ on these for what they offer. I also would like some different size bulbs - i put these in my recessed lighting fixtures in the master bedroom and the leave too much space - they are smaller than a regular flood bulb that goes into a standard recessed lighting enclosure.

i may try these again if the price comes down, or they offer more options. but right now, in my opinion, not really worth the money they charge.

Good Idea but very dim light

Very easy to set up and initially really cool. At night they are not bright enough to light up a room. They are more of a toy rather than a practical improvement in your living space. I had them in for a week and took them out cause It is silly to have to swap out Hue bulb with real bulbs just so you can see.
