    A high-quality and protective case.

    • Written by from HARTFORD

I went into a brick-and-mortar Apple store and it was incredibly busy there. Frustrated with all the commotion I bought 5 different cases to bring home, analyze, and return the undesired. After eliminating a few other cases this case is one of the final two.

*The case seems to be of VERY good quality.
*Its most notable feature is that is seems to be considerably more protective of the phone than any other case.
*It snaps on very well. More tightly than any I've ever seen.
*It does provide clearance between the face of the phone and a flat surface it the phone were set face down. This helps to ensure the face of the phone doesn't get scratched when set down, face side down.

*The very feature that makes the case so incredible has an inherent downside -- bulk. It is a bid larger than the other cases. To those as particular as myself, this case is 0.05" (~1/32") thicker than the other cases (I measured it myself).
*This case does hide the backside of the iPhone 5

If you don't like broken cases and a couple extra hundredths-of-an-inch doesn't bother you, I would ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND this case.

    Great Case, With Reservation

    • Written by from Valley Center

This is a great case, very solid and protective. Allows for great sound through the iPhone speakers if you use those, and the buttons are easy to push with the rubber casings.

The case does show fingerprints on the black and scratches easily, but better the case than the phone. Also, the case won't let the 30-pin to Lightning adapter to connect, so be prepared to go Lightning all the way.

Suggestion: Get the case for excellent protection, get it in white, and go Lightning.

    Great case

The case is light but mighty. The phone is protected without a lot of bulk. Feels solid in the hand. Some people complain about the plastic scratching to easily but I would rather the plastic get scratched then the phone .

    Bad Case

    • Written by from SAN PEDRO

The case does a great job at protecting your phone, but there are so many flaws in the design. I had the black and after 2 weeks, the rubber lining on the edge of the case peeled the crazy, and the glossy back finish scratched all over. For $35, the case should not look like it's 2 years old after 2 weeks of use.

Once you go Speck, you don't go back

    • Written by from Shawnee

I used to buy a lot of cases for iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, to try, test, and advise friends. Then I discovered Speck cases and I quit buying cases because they became the only ones I needed.

The CandyShell for iPhone 5 does not disappoint. The CandyShell cases are a little bulkier than some cases, but nothing compared to something like an Otterbox. Speck cases always have the fit and finish of something Apple would design for their own products. The CandyShell 5 feels great in your hand, and offers a lot more protection then other brands.

    Great, but SCRATCHES

    • Written by from Richmond HIll

The case is great, it looks ok and provides decent protection. The only major problem is that it got very scratched in less than a week that I've had it. I returned it to apple...

    Good but..

I agree with other reviewers about the weight and protection. HOwever, if you use the lightening converter, it will not fit into the phone w/ case on. Regular cord works fine but with my car charger, I have to take the case off to charge.

    Not a Fan

    • Written by from Trussville

I bought this case with my iPhone 5 back in September of 2012. Since this was one of a few cases available at the time for the phone, I bought it. (Black / Grey)

    - Simple design
    - Doesn't get stuck in pants
    - Not too much bulk

    - Headphone port hole isn't big enough for L-shaped cords
    - The plastic on the case shows scrapes.
    - Only lasted 3 months, the bottom rubber wears and tears off.

I would say buy this if today was September 12th, 2012. But there are SO many better cases for better prices. Skip this one.

    Great case

I bought this the day after the iPhone 5 came out. It is perfect. I agree that it seems bulky but it fits the phone well. I like the rubberized perimeter so if you happen to drop your phone face down, it my cushion it well. Worth the price!

    Good Protection Bad Quality

Overall it does a good job at protecting the phone however after a week of having it the glossy back was full of scratches. Another flaw with this case is the rubber trim tearing off very easily.

    Great protection, mediocre quality, bulky.

    • Written by from Toronto

I have had this on my iPhone 5 since new and have been using it for a few months. What attracted me to this case was the apparent level of protection it offered with a shock absorbing soft rubber layer and a hard outer shell, as well as covered buttons. On a protection scale, it sits somewhere between a hardcore case like the Otterbox Defender, and limited protection of a snap case. Importantly (for me), it features a raised bezel around the screen to allow for lay on a table. It is however expensive, bulky, and somewhat fragile. After several months of use, I can offer the following practical insights:

    - Very effective protection: drop from 1m onto wood had no effect. Several months of use and phone looks brand new.
    - Port cutouts are ample: easy access to silent switch, headphone port accommodates large headphone jack (straight, did not test with angled jack)
    - Good response and tactile feedback through button covers
    - Camera cutout is ample, and does not interfere with flash

    - Bulky
    - Scratches easily
    - Rubber began delaminating from plastic after a couple months
    - Several fractures in the hard case appeared after a few months, and this has loosened the fit of the case
-Case is difficult to remove, yet removal is necessary to remove dust or use certain accessories

Considering I dropped the phone once, a crack in the case is understandable, but there are at least 2 different and unrelated cracks in the case that I would not attribute to the fall. This combined with the delamination of the rubber from the shell, point to quality issues with the case. I had an InCase hardshell on my last iPhone which I dropped many many times and it only cracked once after more than 3 years of use. That became my baseline expectation, which the Speck case did not live up to. Furthermore, cracks in the case cause a loss of tension and a very sloppy fit to the phone. Not so with my previous hard case.

    Practical advice:
As with most cases, you will have to remove the case to clean the dust that inevitably gets trapped between the phone and the case. The issue with this case is that it is difficult to remove, and I suspect frequent removal can cause damage to the hard shell layer, which leads to poor fitment and even more dust, so it is a bit of a paradox. Also, get a back film protector if you're worried about dust scratching the phone.

It did it's job and protected my phone from a fall and normal pocket wear and tear, so I can live with the bulk, but for $35 I feel the quality could be much better. The breaks in the case affect fitment so I will be needing a new case. If you are prone to dropping your phone, and can afford to replace this case every 4-6 months, and don't mind the bulk, this case provides solid mid-level protection. I need something that will survive more than a year (or is cheaper to replace) so I will look elsewhere for my next case as there are a plethora of viable options.

    Case falls apart

    • Written by from Houston

After a few days of owning it, and only taking the phone out of the case once, the rubber on the edge began to peel up. Dropped it once and it made it worse, after 3 months of having the case it has about half the rubber still attached and I just ended up replacing it with a different case. However it is a solid case and it protected my phone from a drop onto concrete. The back gloss surface scratches easily.

    Solid iPhone 5 case

    • Written by from Fort Worth

I got this case to replace the Otterbox case I broke while taking it off. I like this one 'cause it is much lighter and thinner than the Otterbox and it provides some shock absorbency with the rubberized interior (though not as good as the Otterbox). I tried some other cases in my hand and this one feels very comfortable due to the rounded edges. The only thing I can see going wrong is that back will get fingerprint smudges and scratched rather easily. That is the only reason I wont give it 5 stars

Doesnʻt hold up to normal wear and tear

    • Written by from Kailua

One month into use: front of case started fraying. I usually keep my phone in a front pocket of shorts or jeans. The case should be able to stand up to that type of wear and tear for more than a few weeks.

After Two Months: Front of case continued to fray, pulled off a few strands of rubber that were getting annoying.

Three months later: Part of the case by the silence switch broke off (at this point, still hadn't dropped the phone).

Four months: Part of the case by by the power input broke off.

Five months: Part of the case between the audio jack and power input broke.

    Speck case

    • Written by from Mesa

I have had the case for one day. The rubber on every corner is frayed and seems its coming apart. The face to rough on the face when talking on the phone. There is also no hole for the background mic on the side of the phone. When I emailed Speck they said it didn't affect the function of the phone. But when I use the phone without the case whomever I am talking to can always hear me perfectly. Planning on returning it ASAP!

Note: The case does NOT scratch the iPhone!

    • Written by from Glen Ellyn

There are some negative reviews of the CandyShell case - a common complaint seems to be "scratches".

I was worried about my phone and took it out of the case this morning - not a scratch on it! So I went back and re-read these reviews... people are upset that the case itself has scratches on the back.

Well... isn't that the point? This case will keep your phone in like-new condition. In doing so, it will absorb the damage that would have been received by your iPhone.

Do Not Buy - Brokw after 2 months from regular use of phone

    • Written by from Atlanta

I was excited to get the Candyshell because it was supposed to be durable and strong. It is not. I had to replace it because it broke from the stress of regular use, i.e., turning on the phone, upping the volume, and charging it. What a waste.
This case seemed like it was great, until it began to get little breaks in the hard plastic shell. The first crack, near the volume up and down buttons and the ringer on and off switch was the first of many subsequent defects which rendered this case not strong and durable, but weak and short-lived.

The first break caused the soft plastic buffer to separate from the hard plastic. Then, I noticed a similiar break near the phone on and off button. In fact, that entire corner became unstable. The final straw came when I had an inch and a half gap between the plastic buffer and the case on the right side and another break in the hard plastic near where you insert the charger.

These are all stress issues, i.e., breaks in the case where it is designed to be used. I have not had any major drops or anything else to cause the damage except regular use. I purchased mine in October, and it started to degrade in December. It is now February and I had to buy another case because it had degraded so badly. I asked them to send me ANOTHER type of case as a replacement, but they said no, they would only send me the same type of case, i.e., the one that broke so badly on me.

So, DO NOT BUY THIS CASE. It is a good idea, but in practice, it breaks from regular use. Not worth more than $10.

    Good protection horrible otherwise

    • Written by from Chicago

This case seems like it would offer good protection but everything else is bad. It does scratch badly but I don't really care about that. What bothers me is that it doesn't fit a lot of headphone plugs, so I had to make the hole bigger. I've had it a few months and the rubber is shredded to bits. This might not happen if you don't take it off ever but since the bad design would OBLIGATE you to take it off to use any headphones that aren't apple ones it's going to look ugly quickly. Especially disappointing seeing as how they were giving me the hard sell on this one in the apple store
