    Best case I've had!

    • Written by from Montreal

I have had this case for a little over 7 months and I can easily say that it is THE BEST one I've had. Ever. The first week I got my iPhone 5s I accidentally dropped it in water - and I mean completely submerged. The speck case was so tightly fitted around all the important edges and corners of my phone that no water ever reached it. I have checked the phone for liquid damage and it had no trace. Besides the water exposure, the phone has been dropped many times, on different surfaces and from different heights - all resulting in the same outcome - not even a single sign of damage. I love this case and I am buying another one for later on and a third one for my friend. It is extremely robust and the protection it provides is superior to any other case I have had before. Amazing!

Doesnʻt hold up to normal wear and tear

    • Written by from Kailua

One month into use: front of case started fraying. I usually keep my phone in a front pocket of shorts or jeans. The case should be able to stand up to that type of wear and tear for more than a few weeks.

After Two Months: Front of case continued to fray, pulled off a few strands of rubber that were getting annoying.

Three months later: Part of the case by the silence switch broke off (at this point, still hadn't dropped the phone).

Four months: Part of the case by by the power input broke off.

Five months: Part of the case between the audio jack and power input broke.

    Great case!

    • Written by from Columbia

Snug fit. Great protection from most incidents. Maintains sleek design of the phone. Slips well into and out of pockets. Provides a light, appropriate grip weather in hand or pocket. Expected Speck quality. I highly recommend it. I carry 2 5s' at all times as a paramedic in a very busy, very dangerous city. Great stuff!

Doesn't last, expensive and didn't protect screen against shatter

    • Written by from San Francisco

This product started to fall apart around ~1 year of ownership. The plastic pieces around the headphone jack and power cracked off, the rubber gasket starts to catch, and now, as of today, my $39.99 was for nothing. I was running, tripped and my screen shattered despite being in the case. I realize that a case only helps so much and large drops may still result in screen shatter, but think that the case should have protected in this particular situation.

Had it not fallen apart, I think it would have protected more.

    does not last

    • Written by from St. Charles

I bought my CandyShell directly from the Apple store in Chicago, and it has already broken apart (there is literally a piece which broke off). This happened in less than 8 months of purchasing it. I expect better quality from a product which is particularly being sold in an Apple store as an accessory to their high-end electronics. Of course, the return has to be made directly with Speck, not Apple.

    The only cover we use

    • Written by from sparks

I / We have had the speck covers for all 3 generations of iPhone. Trust me you will drop your phone sometime and this cover WILL protect your phone. My husband likes that it easily goes into his pocket. the rubber front protects the iPhone screen. We have never had a phone crack or scratch with this cover. You can easily get a year or two use out of one (depending on how often you drop it)

2010 version lasted 2.5 years, 2013 version lasted 1 month

    • Written by from Boston

I recently bought what I though was the same exact case as I did in 2010. And I did (same company, same model), except the quality has gone WAY down. My first version did a good job keeping my phone protected and slowly over time the plastic broke near the charger plug, but that was really it. I decided to get a new one this past summer, just to make sure my phone was protected as it could be and this new case is TOTAL GARBAGE. I bought it at Apple thinking that they continue to review the products that they sell in their store. The speck case I have is very poor quality. The plastic broke near the charger plug within the first two months, the rubber around the edges has completely deteriorated and constantly is crumbling off (now missing in several places around the case). I have not handled the phone or case any differently. Went back to Apple recently and they said there is nothing they can do. Last time I buy any accessory from Apple.

    Speck case

    • Written by from Mesa

I have had the case for one day. The rubber on every corner is frayed and seems its coming apart. The face to rough on the face when talking on the phone. There is also no hole for the background mic on the side of the phone. When I emailed Speck they said it didn't affect the function of the phone. But when I use the phone without the case whomever I am talking to can always hear me perfectly. Planning on returning it ASAP!

    Great protection, mediocre quality, bulky.

    • Written by from Toronto

I have had this on my iPhone 5 since new and have been using it for a few months. What attracted me to this case was the apparent level of protection it offered with a shock absorbing soft rubber layer and a hard outer shell, as well as covered buttons. On a protection scale, it sits somewhere between a hardcore case like the Otterbox Defender, and limited protection of a snap case. Importantly (for me), it features a raised bezel around the screen to allow for lay on a table. It is however expensive, bulky, and somewhat fragile. After several months of use, I can offer the following practical insights:

    - Very effective protection: drop from 1m onto wood had no effect. Several months of use and phone looks brand new.
    - Port cutouts are ample: easy access to silent switch, headphone port accommodates large headphone jack (straight, did not test with angled jack)
    - Good response and tactile feedback through button covers
    - Camera cutout is ample, and does not interfere with flash

    - Bulky
    - Scratches easily
    - Rubber began delaminating from plastic after a couple months
    - Several fractures in the hard case appeared after a few months, and this has loosened the fit of the case
-Case is difficult to remove, yet removal is necessary to remove dust or use certain accessories

Considering I dropped the phone once, a crack in the case is understandable, but there are at least 2 different and unrelated cracks in the case that I would not attribute to the fall. This combined with the delamination of the rubber from the shell, point to quality issues with the case. I had an InCase hardshell on my last iPhone which I dropped many many times and it only cracked once after more than 3 years of use. That became my baseline expectation, which the Speck case did not live up to. Furthermore, cracks in the case cause a loss of tension and a very sloppy fit to the phone. Not so with my previous hard case.

    Practical advice:
As with most cases, you will have to remove the case to clean the dust that inevitably gets trapped between the phone and the case. The issue with this case is that it is difficult to remove, and I suspect frequent removal can cause damage to the hard shell layer, which leads to poor fitment and even more dust, so it is a bit of a paradox. Also, get a back film protector if you're worried about dust scratching the phone.

It did it's job and protected my phone from a fall and normal pocket wear and tear, so I can live with the bulk, but for $35 I feel the quality could be much better. The breaks in the case affect fitment so I will be needing a new case. If you are prone to dropping your phone, and can afford to replace this case every 4-6 months, and don't mind the bulk, this case provides solid mid-level protection. I need something that will survive more than a year (or is cheaper to replace) so I will look elsewhere for my next case as there are a plethora of viable options.

    Pricey, but protective

    • Written by from Tuscaloosa

My case has been alright, but the price doesn't reflect the value. It has broken in multiple places and the back scratches very easily. It has held up about 3-4 months.

    Good Protection Bad Quality

    • Written by from Richardson

Overall it does a good job at protecting the phone however after a week of having it the glossy back was full of scratches. Another flaw with this case is the rubber trim tearing off very easily.

    Good and Sturdy

    • Written by from Springfield

This case is one of the better cases sold in apples store. The case is protective and well built so that the iphone is secure and in place. The iphone is fit and doesn't move around in the case because of the rubber inner lining. but the case gets scratches easily. And if you dont put in the iphone right the case gets a bubble on the back. So place it in end first and push the air out while slowly fitting the iphone inside the case. Buttons are easy to press as well. But the bottom rubber part right under the home button can rip off after months of wear and tear. Over all a good case and worth the buy for a slim protective case.

    Case falls apart

    • Written by from Houston

After a few days of owning it, and only taking the phone out of the case once, the rubber on the edge began to peel up. Dropped it once and it made it worse, after 3 months of having the case it has about half the rubber still attached and I just ended up replacing it with a different case. However it is a solid case and it protected my phone from a drop onto concrete. The back gloss surface scratches easily.

    Not a Fan

    • Written by from Trussville

I bought this case with my iPhone 5 back in September of 2012. Since this was one of a few cases available at the time for the phone, I bought it. (Black / Grey)

    - Simple design
    - Doesn't get stuck in pants
    - Not too much bulk

    - Headphone port hole isn't big enough for L-shaped cords
    - The plastic on the case shows scrapes.
    - Only lasted 3 months, the bottom rubber wears and tears off.

I would say buy this if today was September 12th, 2012. But there are SO many better cases for better prices. Skip this one.

Note: The case does NOT scratch the iPhone!

    • Written by from Glen Ellyn

There are some negative reviews of the CandyShell case - a common complaint seems to be "scratches".

I was worried about my phone and took it out of the case this morning - not a scratch on it! So I went back and re-read these reviews... people are upset that the case itself has scratches on the back.

Well... isn't that the point? This case will keep your phone in like-new condition. In doing so, it will absorb the damage that would have been received by your iPhone.

Do Not Buy - Brokw after 2 months from regular use of phone

    • Written by from Atlanta

I was excited to get the Candyshell because it was supposed to be durable and strong. It is not. I had to replace it because it broke from the stress of regular use, i.e., turning on the phone, upping the volume, and charging it. What a waste.
This case seemed like it was great, until it began to get little breaks in the hard plastic shell. The first crack, near the volume up and down buttons and the ringer on and off switch was the first of many subsequent defects which rendered this case not strong and durable, but weak and short-lived.

The first break caused the soft plastic buffer to separate from the hard plastic. Then, I noticed a similiar break near the phone on and off button. In fact, that entire corner became unstable. The final straw came when I had an inch and a half gap between the plastic buffer and the case on the right side and another break in the hard plastic near where you insert the charger.

These are all stress issues, i.e., breaks in the case where it is designed to be used. I have not had any major drops or anything else to cause the damage except regular use. I purchased mine in October, and it started to degrade in December. It is now February and I had to buy another case because it had degraded so badly. I asked them to send me ANOTHER type of case as a replacement, but they said no, they would only send me the same type of case, i.e., the one that broke so badly on me.

So, DO NOT BUY THIS CASE. It is a good idea, but in practice, it breaks from regular use. Not worth more than $10.
