    Terrible Case

    • Written by from Toronto

Bought the case less less than 6 months ago, the wallet part is great, I love the idea.

However the black plastic around the outside edge has all peeled off making my case now grey around the border of my screen. Without this edge holding the leather down, its now starting to come away as well, I'll have to replace the case within the year, and it won't be with another HEX case.

Hex Solo Wallet Case is amazing!

I'm going to give a brief review of the feel, fit and construction of the case. When I first unboxed the case i was immediatley greeted with the supple feel of the textured full grain leather on the back and sides of the case. The inside has a soft touch feel to it and it does not seem like it will scratch the iPhones back. This case fits the iPhone 5 perfectly, the camera hole is very large and is sure not to interfere with snapping pics and taking video. The case has two credit card slots on the back for when you don't want to carry a wallet, they hold the cards very securely. Hex has done a great job designing this case with high quality materials and ensuring a great fit on the iPhone.

THE Iphone 5 Case. Fantastic Product.

The biggest problem with just about any case is the fact that when the buttons of the iphone are covered, the buttons dont click in correctly, the phone is too bulky, and they aren't sleek and compliment the structure of the phone. In this case, it perfectly compliments all the edges and slim shape of the Iphone, only adding a miniscule amount of thickness to the Iphone. It fits several cards after being worn in and can hold tons of cash. It is a slim case that fits smoothly into jean pockets as well as any other small areas. It doesnt cover the front of the pohne, allowing you to have the full Iphone 5 Screen to yourself and surprisingly is very strong when the phone falls. I have dropped the phone several times in this case and it has been fine. Overall, GET THIS CASE

The quality of the leather leaves a lot to be desired. They should call it plastic, which it is.

    Beware: Wifi-reception severely impaired

I liked the case as the leather finish gave it a good tangible finish. Also putting in 1 credit card or whatever in the back served well.

Yet, the key reason rating it down and giving it a clear "beware":
I noticed really sluggish behavior of my iphone lately when it was connected to wifi. Since it was persistent and independent of time and location it drew my curiosity to find out what's going on.
To cut the long story short: the wifi connection speed (upload and download) is severely impaired with this case on!!

I don't want to bother with explanations of why a few dB on a logarithmic scale actually are a huge difference. Hence this simplification:

Without this case on, my speedtests on my xfinity wifi at home consistently gave me 15+ MB/sec download and 4+ MB/sec upload.

WITH this case, it clearly and reproducibly drops down to 0.2 MB/s download and equally upload.

For me, that's reason to consider this case absolutely unacceptable.

PS: I also compared this to my wife's case from another brand and this other case didn't measurably impair the wifi speed.
You might also be interested, whether it's only wifi impacted or also 3G/LTE?
Well...I didn't notice and didn't test it; these are difference frequency ranges but generally in the same range: consequently you would expect an impact, too.
The moment I was sure that Wifi suffers that much, I ended testing and returned it.

PPS: I first suspected the negative impact rooting in a RFID/ISO14443 enabled credit card or my company badge that I slipped in the back of the case - but that wasn't it. RFID operates at abt. 14MHz and although "radio frequency" at times behaves like voodoo, it would have been really surprising if that had been the culprit.

I gave this case some time before I rushed and put up a review for it. The slots were tight at first, but with use they now go in and out with ease yet, do not fall out of the case. The phone is hard to get in and out of the case, but I'd rather have the phone fit snug, then to drop it once and have my phone fly out of the case - what would be the purpose of a case if it didnt hold it in snug? Those were the only two concerns I had after using this case for the first couple of weeks, but since then, I love it! Love it so much I got the Axis case to try out as well :)

This case is rugged on the inside, but smooth and comfortable on the outside. I always loved the feel of the iPhone 3G in the hand, and this is a great option for the phone to feel more comfortable again. Oh, and did I mention the card slots are sweet and perfect for me as a college student. Perfect for the student id card and to pull around some extra cash. I recomend this case

    Good Idea

If you choose to get a case for your new IPhone, this is a good option.

The new IPhone 5 is slimmer, lighter, so I liked gripping it with a case better than without one.

This leather case has a nice feel and simple appearence. It's not a substitute for your wallet, so don't jam wads of cash and lot's of credit cards into it. Really, these days do you need more than one credit/debit & an ID? Methinks 95% of the time "no".

Plus, all the other new Iphone cases are just weird, super glossy (fingerprints), and unattractive.

Not as good as last version

I had this same case but for the iPhone 4 and loved it (would have rated it a 5 star). Seems this time around they have used a different material and pattern. The original was a smooth leather that had some give when sliding in cards. This version is patterned and doesn't feel like real leather. It is also, as the above poster noted, very tight and difficult to pull the cards out. Maybe with time it will soften and loosen. So at this point I rate it a 2 but hope with time and age to go to a 3.5 to 4.

Not a bogus solo wallet review

I'm usually not one to post a lot of reviews. I have had several HEX products and when I saw the review posted here by Damian W, i felt that I should post in the interest of all of you who may actually use these reviews for buying advice.
The Solo Wallet is made very well - there are no sharp edges. I have owned the Solo Wallet for 4S as well as 5 and the edges are nicely rounded and finished.
The Solo Wallet holds 2 credit cards. This is true - and this is exactly what is stated and pictured, so no surprises there.
The leather is very nice quality and comparable, in my opinion to leather you might find on a wallet in the $100 price range.

Not sure how the Solo Wallet can be listed both as "too bulky" and not storing enough cards in Damian's view? That review doesn't quite add up for me - judge for yourselves.

Overall, I am happy with my Solo Wallet for 5, just like I was with my Solo Wallet for 4S. The idea is to have a slim wallet solution with a couple cards/ID and you're on your way. I don't think it's meant to replace a giant wallet.

I just felt like you might want a more realistic review. Thanks.

    Great idea...

I love the idea of being able to fuse my wallet and iPhone together. I was excited to try this case and get that going with my iPhone 5, but I am disappointed. Overall I love the concept but the "leather" feels very cheap and seems as though it will disintegrate after a couple weeks of normal usage. When depressing the sleep/wake button, you are greeted by a hard edge of the case that just digs into your finger and makes the experience of the iPhone less enjoyable. The card slots are a MAX capacity of one card per slot. I placed two cards in the top slot and one in the bottom. It was a fight to get them in and an even bigger fight to get them out; I had to remove my iPhone to get the cards out.

    TL:DR
    - Feels cheap
    - Too bulky
    - Harsh edges
    - Two card maximum
    - Returned after 20 minutes
