Slightly more than just a bracelet.

I'll start of this review with a quick about me. Age 18. Male. Pretty active lifestyle. According to my band I average 10,000 steps per day.

I bought the UP band for a few reasons. 1. I like the idea of technology becoming increasingly intertwined with daily life, especially in relation to personal health/well-being. 2. The UP is more comfortable and looks nicer than other comparable products (Fuel, Bit, etc.) 3. I like the idea of wearing a bracelet, but most are tacky (currently it is the only wrist accessory I wear).

Price point is meh, simply because it matches the Nike Fuel and FitBit.
Astethically the UP far surpasses competition, it is slimmer and lighter than the Fuel. It feels comfortable after becoming accustomed to the feel. But, Sizing can get a little complicated especially when you are stuck between snug and loose. Jawbone's sizing guide isn't too helpful on this question.

Functionally it works great, having a ten-day battery is a HUGE benefit to the UP. It is hard to check back the band's accuracy when it comes to number of steps, but the sleep tracking feature is amazingly accurate. Please! Calibrate your Band! This makes a big differences in determining step count throughout the day.

The UP band is a Motivator! This is probably the most significant feature or I guess result of owning the UP band. Knowing that the UP is tracking all of your steps really encourages more activity, and more sleep. That's a huge benefit for people who are looking to improve their well-being.

It doesn't do bluetooth, which I speculate a later generation will probably have built in.
Having to manually put the band in sleep mode is a small hassle that sometimes results in sleep not being tracked.
Water resistant not waterproof meaning no swimming, but it can do showers and such. I always take mine off before any water related activity.

The UP App for iPhone is a little clunky and can definitely use uprages for usability. But the data is displayed neatly and it is easy to find and show others.

People always ask about my UP band. It is a really good product that I would encourage anyone to buy. But it is not a necessity by anymeans and could definitely use some upgrades.

Was this useful? Slightly more than just a bracelet.

Sleep better, train better, feel better

I am new to the fitness tracking and training world. The Jawbone UP made it easy for me to get a handle on managing my diet, learning how active (or inactive) I am and motivated me to do better. So far I have had my UP for 4 weeks and have lost 8 pounds and loved every minute of it!

A great buy and one of the best investments i've made. The one feature I wish it had was the ability to track your weight and integrate with wi-fi scales or allow you to calculate body fat percentages (like the fit-bit does).

Overall would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. It's a better value than the Nike+ Fuel band with the sleep on its own!

Have used mine continuously since December 2012. Good for people who have an n=1 (experiment of one) mentality.

Pro: it is a great device to keep track of your week to week or month to month activity. Used as a longitudinal tool, it is quite effective. Also, good to see the correlation between sleep and activity. It has been helpful to look at my sleep patterns and to try to improve my sleep habits. Created "Team" with my wife (who also has one) that promotes competition/accountability. Easy to use and easy to wear. Battery life is very good. Build quality and durability has been good. Finally, looks ok and it is a conversation starter.

Con: Distance accuracy. But of course a device on your wrist is not going to be able to judge distance very well. But my focus has been on my total activity day to day, week to week etc. and for that it is fine. I think that an ankle device would do a better job with distance. Wish that the software had a journalling and weight tracking option. (Recent update brought in ability to sync to other apps, but I have not used yet). Have to be careful to not lose the cap when syncing. Finally, can take on odors when cooking, grilling etc.

Note: Might be more helpful if I used the food tracking option, but have not.

I really wanted to like this but I didn't! I found the band awkward and uncomfortable to wear.
It is super easy to use and set up but I wish it would sync via bluetooth. The cap can easily be lost. I ordered a Nike Fuel band and this will be going back.
The sleep tracking is pretty cool though!

I have had an UP band since Nov 2012.
I have been through 5 of them.
    2 charging issues.
    1 syncing issue
    1 button jammed issue
    1 sizing issue

When I contacted JawBone about my last bands charging issue they sent me a replacement band. The replacement band was previously owned by someone else and it was in a poorer physical state than the Band it was replacing.
Yes the App interface is great and the concept is Novel. But the life span of the Product is NOT worth $129.00.

I chose the up band instead of the nike fuel band because of the extra features it offers. I loved it, absolutely loved my UP band but within 3 weeks it stopped charging out of nowhere. Since Apple return policy is only 2 weeks it was too late for me to get a full refund. I dealt with the manufacturer and I must say their customer service is 5 stars, no complaints! they sent me a brand new band and what do you know? broken from the start, it doesn't hold a charge. I'm getting a new one mailed again and this time i plan on selling the new one and i will be purchasing the nike fuel.
I mostly regret that at first I was recommending this product to everyone and two of my friends also bought it (they ended up returning them within the 2 weeks) DO NOT PURCHASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 months of daily use & it is now completely useless. Took it off to shower & swim so that should not be the issue. It doesn't sync or charge all in one day. Very disappointed with this very expensive junk. I won't buy this again.

    I love my Up band

It's fascinating to see how many steps I take during the day and how many hours of sleep I get. And to track it over time. It's so easy, too. Just put on the discreet band and forget about it.

The information is presented so nicely on the free iPhone app. The Up band even gives me gentle vibration reminders if I've been sitting at my desk too long.

One of my favorite features is how Up tracks deep sleep versus light sleep, and wakes me with a gentle vibration at just the right moment. No more blaring alarm clocks jolting you out of deep sleep. That feature alone has made a big impact on my daily life.

I wore this band everyday for four months. Somedays walking up to 20 miles a day. Always took it off to shower. Never damaged but now broken. Won't sync, won't charge and button no longer works all the same day. I love the device but don't think I will get another one.

    Good functionality but questionable design

I did a thorough review of the wearable landscape before settling on the UP based primarily on the sleep tracking and vibration alarm. I was very pleased with the step and sleep tracking, as both (despite being 'best guesses') seemed accurate. The interface leaves something to be desired (particularly the diet tracking) and if you happen to be that early adopter who is reliant on guides, you're in trouble, but I loved the trend analysis and daily notifications.

That said, the physical band has a design flaw in that it does not clasp . . . sure it looks like a cool and clever design, but it's ability to 'bend to accomodate an active lifestyle' meant that mine came off my wrist during a 2-minute dip in the ocean on my recent vacation. Gone.

When I wrote to Jawbone asking 1) what personal info might be at risk should someone find it, and 2) did they offer a discounted replacement program, they responded to only to the latter saying no, I'd have to buy a new one. And PS: I should not have submerged it in water; only now does their site suggest (buried in the FAQ) removing it while swimming, when it originally sold it as the holistic lifestyle device 'you never need to take off.'

The Fitbit wristband (due out in spring supposedly) with similar functionality + blue-tooth connectivity + a CLASP will be my replacement purchase. And I'll save thirty bucks in the process.

Have to say, loving this device so far. The sleep and activity tracking are very very accurate. Device is light to the point if forgetting about it. Also hooked in the vibration alarm. Lot to offer in the package. Couldn't stay with fitbit, kept losing the device and just didnt seem as user friendly.

Bought this one to replace the Lark.
The bracelet is comfortable and look ok.
At first I was impressed by the battery life. But after one week I had to recharge and then recharge it every other day. Then every two hours and hour and did not hold the charge any longer.
I also like the way he tells me about my night, this part of it was well done.
Second glitch I find the timer or chronometer did not work.
I don't thing it was made for our winter in Canada or people that do sport and sweated with gloves or mittens.
The Up needs to go back to the drawing table to fix their glitches and make a the bracelet more resistant to temperature, water, snow, etc.
And please get this to work with bluetooth.

I wasn't able to use this to keep track of my running records. It only measure things with vague descriptions that post my mood as 'supercharged' or 'ok'.

Any time it was measuring a workout it only made petty records of my workout and no real calorie burn count. The walking measurements were also off.

And good luck trying to save the cap to the armband from falling. Mine came off and now I'm stuck with the product unable to return it to the apple store.

It's not perfect yet, but this band has been a wonderful pedometer (I've done many tests to see if it over or under counts), a great sleep tracker, consistently accurate.

I actually do track my food and, though it needs a few improvements, it's driven me to eating healthier and being more aware of what I'm putting in my body.

I love the gentle armband alarm and the inactivity reminder.

Not perfect yet, but Jawbone has stood behind it's Customer Service and Product Research.

Buy an iPod Nano instead for simple pedometer function.

I tried UP for a week. The battery life is great. It's well built, and I had no real bugs with the software. However, I mainly wanted to track my walking and can do that by dropping the current generation iPod nano in my pocket. Unlike the UP, the Nano provides a decent screen to monitor my progress without connecting it to something else. It also offers all the advantages of an MP3 player, in addition to other features. The UP offers a sleep function that I didn't use, so I won't miss that. If you want a more full featured fitness device, UP or Nike FuelBand is probably going to be a better alternative for you.

For myself, I much prefer slipping something unnoticeable in my pants pocket than wearing something on the wrist. Interestingly, the number of steps reported was surprisingly close between the two products.

UP is a decent product but for what I'm using it for, I prefer the pedometer built into the iPod Nano. Too, one can upload fitness related data into Nike if that's your thing.

Way more than a pedometer -- it tracks my sleep, REM cycles and of course, steps. What's cooler is that it also tracks my progress against my friends. It is definitely a motivator for a healthier lifestyle.
