Constant false alarms makes it unusable

    • Written by from Cottleville

I bought this over a year ago and just found it again after giving up on it. I checked to see if there was an update to the app recently. Nope, not since October. There are so many embarrassing false alarms that it is unusable. I've played with all the settings to no avail. I'm surprised this product is still in the Apple Store because it is not reliable. It is nicely designed and well made and looks good, if only it worked well.

    Piece of Junk

    • Written by from Mount Morris

This is a zero star item. I could not get it to charge. Tried everything. Switched outlets, chargers, USB plug and it never even pretended to charge. I cannot believe Apple is standing by this product! Don't waste your time, don't waste your money. Hey APPLE, there are some considerable issues with the Hipkey. Why do you even sell this? It is SUBSTANDARD and not up to the quality consumers expect when shopping at the Apple store.

too bad they don't have -1 stars

    • Written by from Rockville

Save yourself some headache. I saw some negative reviews, but in view of some positive and also because it sold on Apple's store I gave it a chance.

    Problems:
    1. Buggy and even slowed down an Iphone 5S. It has to be really bad coding for the App.
    2. The App has a lot of bells and whistles, but in reality most of it is just gimmicks. The distance control (sensitivity) is a joke.
    3. The unit is constantly loosing connection with the phone and does not get reconnected automatically when near. You need to bring up the app and then it connects. I think that the main issue is that it wants to own the Bluetooth connection to the device instead of letting IOS do what it does best.
    4. Now for the killer. The bad reviews about the battery not lasting are true. Battery or unit stop taking charge after only 45 days of use
    5. Now for the worse yet. Customer service from the company is nonexistent. It is based in Europe or Australia. Sorry, I am not wasting my time and money to ship garbage overseas to get another garbage.

In my view this is a nice mechanical design with poor software and electronics material implementation. Even my cheap shower Bluetooth speaker has a better reception (for music mind you) much further than the distance this would loose connection.

Can you imagine having to carry the phone and hipkey and the key holder holding it all around the house when just going upstairs in your house with the phone? The safe zone feature is mostly a gimmick so that you don't observe the high amount of false alarms when the unit is used outside the safe zones you set. It should be called Quiet zone (most of the time)

REALLY wish this was worth it!

    • Written by from Middleton

My wife bought the Hip Key for me at Christmas. It sat until three weeks ago. It was awesome! Actually saved me twice from wasting time. The fact it worked both ways helped me too. However, like many others have said it stopped taking a charge after one recharge. I was surprised to go to the store and see it was not offered anymore. Apple gave me store credit. For a split second I thought about ordering the now less than $60 priced replacement. I don't have a customer service example, but in my mind the customer service neglect is a deal breaker. Mainly because the store was being "nice"by giving store credit. I won't risk it again.

Great Idea, poorly executed, dismally supported

    • Written by from Santa Rosa

I REALLY wanted to like this product. As a physician, when I round in hospitals I'm constantly pulling my iPhone from its case, setting it down in front of me, then forgetting to pick it up before I move on to a different nursing unit or workstation. Even worse, I sometimes leave home without my phone, discovering I don't have it only when it comes time to make a call or retrieve a bit of personal or medical information. This device and the accompanying app seemed designed for me.

However, within a few days, gratitude for its help turned to contempt for its failings. The battery, which is supposed to last 2-3 weeks, would lose its charge entirely and repetitively within 2 DAYS. False alarms irritated those around me (hipKey literally on one hip, iPhone on the other, but both squawking at me to tell me that they were no longer in range of one another. Occasionally, the hipKey would heat up dramatically in my pocket, then announce a disconnect. The "battery indicator" in the iOS app was USELESS. It would tell me the battery was fully charged when the device wouldn't even power on.

None of the email support requests I sent to the company was answered. The FAQ on their website seems to have been created by Google Translate, with buttons on the device and features in the iOS app carrying randomly differing names in different places.

When I returned it, 2 days shy of my allotted 2 weeks, I told the sales staff at my local Apple Retail Store it was the single most disappointing product I'd EVER purchased from Apple, and I recommended they remove it from the list of things they offer for sale.

    Poor Quality Control during manufacture

    • Written by from LONDON

I have recently purchased this product from an Apple store in the UK. The hipkey would not take a charge so I returned to the store and exchanged it for another still sealed in its packaging. When I got this home this would not take a charge also. I intend to return this one to the store and ask for a refund.

There appears to be very poor quality control during manufacture that I managed to get two which both had the same fault, which appears to be quite common according to other reviews.

The product is a good idea, but this manufacturer's product is very poor indeed.

false alarms are a huge deal-breaker

    • Written by from Vancouver

I want to love this product, but … the false alarms! It worked great for about a week, and then the false alarms started, warning me that hipKey has lost its connection … when it was 3 feet away … in a so-called “safe zone.” All of this behaviour persisted after basic troubleshooting like resets of the pairing.

Even a few false alarms would basically be a disaster for this product. Obviously can’t trust this thing in a movie theatre or business meeting! Can’t even sleep with it around.

I really like this device and have had it for 5 months. Once you get it set up it works fine. I do get an occasional false alarm, but not enough to deter me from using this to save me from leaving my phone. I have found when the app updates it has been best to un-pair and re-pair the device to get the best work of this....I had so many disconnects with the latest ios update so I just un-paired and re-paired to my iphone and voila great connection again

    Great Idea - Bad Product

    • Written by from Hillsdale

I like to call my self an earlier adopter of new technology and this was a great idea/concept but quality control apparently got the best of them. I enthusiastically purchased a hip key because I have a bad habit of leaving either my phone or my keys all over the place. This would be the product to solve my problem. It's a bit on the expensive side, but it would have saved me a lot of headaches.

But then this product became the headache. I went through 3 of them (All purchased from Apple Store) and neither one of them work. They just would not power on. Even the store employees were surprised. Guess I'll look at the Kensington one...

    MOTION & DISTANCE mode issues

    • Written by from Greer

I agree with the many other reviewers stating that it is a great concept, but too many false alarms and false claims. FAR too many for $$. I don't believe any of the reviewers stating "this is ...great, perfect..etc.." Too many issues in the 2 modes I tried...can expect the same from the third.

MOTION MODE: Can NOT make this work! It claims that in motion mode, "track your handbag," or "even a sleeping baby." However, I cannot move further than 10' away without being alerted. Shouldn't that only happen in DISTANCE mode? Shouldn't I be able to go to another room at LEAST without it going off? Why need this if you're in VIEWING distance of a sleeping child or your handbag?

DISTANCE: The "safe zone" captures my exact address as I'm sitting here, yet it alerts me moments after testing and putting it in 'Alarm Distance' stating I'm NOT in safe zone and have gotten outside the distance.

If these issues are user error, or this product doesn't do what we all "expect" it to do..there is either a big misrepresentation, or it's just not a perfected product. Don't spend the $ until MANY improvements are made, or another company offers a better product.

    HipKey Needs More Software Features

    • Written by from Juneau

I love this thing....but, 1 point of criticism.
I want to never ever hear even 1 decibel of noise
from this thing unless I am trying to find my keys
on purpose. There are times when my keys and phone
get separated, on purpose, and my keys are not lost.
So I want a slider to turn off this beep to remind if
    separated thing.

Excellent product that works as described

    • Written by

I have not had any issues with the app or hipkey not functioning exactly as described. Connection happens very quickly from within the app itself, no need to go to "settings", "bluetooth", and wait for pairing. The app is eye-appealing, clear, and easy to use. I am very satisfied with this product.

I have had hipkey for 5 months now and praise it every day. The neat little device helps me keep track on my iPhone when needed. I travel a lot and here hipkey comes in very handy to ensure me I never leave behind my iPhone. hipkey has smart features like the SafeZone (mutes alarms at specified locations like your Home or Office) and Motion Mode which makes hipKey an instant movement alarm that can protect your bag or purse from theft. I use this feature at restaurants etc.
