Broke within 1 month, all data lost

After one month of good, fast, performance the drive stopped showing up on my computer whenever I would plug it in. After speaking with tech support it was determined that it was a hardware problem and, still being under warranty, they said I could get it fixed for free.

However, I was informed that to get any information off of the drive I would have to contact a company called d2Recovery (or someone similarly qualified) who solemnly informed me that the service would be $400 or $1000 depending on what was wrong with the drive.

Waste of money, I'll be asking for a refund and will go with a more reliable company and a more reliable product. If you do go with this company be sure to pay more money for a backup service. Though this is a "rugged" drive it spent all of its time in a computer bag, never had the change to utilize its supposed ruggedness.

I'll be more cautious purchasing any more hardware tacitly endorsed by Apple in the future.

    Disappointed is an understatement here.

    USB 3.0 Port Broken

I've had this hard drive for about 4 months now and the USB 3.0 Jack on the hard drive shell became very loose. I have used this hard drive at work in a very controlled environment the fact that it broke so quickly is very disappointing. It seems this hard drive was not put through any type of rugged testing before actually mass producing and selling for an overpriced case. Please consider another RUGGED product before this one.

    not that rugged

This hard drive worked just fine, for the year and a half that it sat on my desk, or was transported in my work bag. But, it recently fell *two feet* off of the hotel bed, where i was working, onto the floor. Now it's making horrible grinding sounds and i cant get any of the data that's on it off. Not rugged at all. I'd say if you just plan on moving this around in a safe and cushy computer bag, then it's fine.... but dont expect it to survive a very small fall.

USB 3.0 slot broke in less than 6 months

    No stars at all!

This product is not rugged at all. In less than 6 months, the USB 3.0 slot broke and I hardly used it as I utilised the Thunderbolt more.

Also I heard that the La Cie Customer Service is horrible. I am now thinking if I should bother with the supposed 2 Year Warranty for a replacement.

I am now hoping that the Thunderbolt does not break down as well!

    Not "Rugged" at all

I have a dozen Lacie drives(nine of them are older "Rugged" models). I've never had a problem, though I know colleagues who have. I bought the 1TB Thunderbolt Series and was pretty happy with it until it took a short and not-very-hard fall off my coffee table. The impact was much less than some of the drops that have occurred with my other drives. But this one died. As far as I'm concerned they advertise this model as being something it is not. The worst part, however, is dealing with Lacie's support. They couldn't care less and seem more interested in forcing you to use their overpriced data recovery service by implying that if you don't they might not honor the warranty. I think I'm done with Lacie.

I purchased from Apple retail store. The box clearly says 1TB,. Yet no matter how I format it, I only find only 700MB on this disk. In comparison, all my other external drives (none LaCie) are accurate on the same machine. I returned this item and bought another brand.

    Didn't work

Didn't work for me at all. Sent it back. Seems it worked for others. Vanished from desktop. Couldn't handle transferring files. I couldn't do anything with it.

Also, I found it very ugly. The orange color is pretty nasty however the bumper can be peeled off quite easily.

Pro video users AVOID (specifically SXS/XDCAM Field use)

I purchased this drive last week from Apple for the sole intention of using on an upcoming job.
Thunderbolt speeds were the deciding factor in buying this drive. I use a Promise Pegasus RAID already and I love it.
I had to edit (FCPX) a fast turnaround video of the days events so far by midday on day 1. It seemed to hold up okay to this task. Import of the short XDCAM clips worked fine. Although I was not blown away by how fast it was.
I noticed the like other users, that the connectors were getting very hot.

Most of day 2 was spent filming long seminars. About 40 mins each.
End of the day arrives and the plan is to dump all the the footage from the SXS cards onto this drive and then copy onto another hard drive that my client has provided so he can take it back to the US with him.
I set up my MBP, started the transfer and walked away for 10 mins. When I returned, my MBP was in sleep mode. Strange... I tried to wake it but to no avail.

Panic sets in. My MBP is DEAD! We had a MacPro with us on the stand. So I whip out the card reader and my Lacie Rugged 1TB (with thunderbolt) and kick the sales guys off the MacPro.
I start the transfer process again. 10 minutes in, I receive a warning message telling me there 'might not be enough free space left on the drive'. Okay... There is no way I have used 1TB this is XDCAM HD. Not 4K.
There was 800+ GB available. At this point, the penny dropped. ITS THE DRIVE not the MBP (I had been using my Apple TB cable too).

Im pretty sure its not the cable like other users have reported. I can't pinpoint the problem. It might be to do with the speed of the drive inside. But seriously, what is the point of putting a slow drive in a Thunderbolt enclosure?
I'll shut up now. Its not a great experience that I have had with this drive and I will think twice about buying Lacie again. From the outside, it seems like a cracking product. On the inside it is massively flawed.

My MBP lives to fight another day by the way.

    Old Lacie Firewire is faster!

Just received the drive and had high hopes for the thunderbolt transfer speeds but am very disappointed. Copied a 14GB file and it's slower on the thunderbolt drive than my older firewire/usb drive!!! Here's the time comparisons with my older drive:

    Older Lacie firewire 800 - 2:51
    Older Lacie USB 3 - 2:53

    New Lacie Thunderbolt - 3:18
    New Lacie USB 3.0 - 3:14

    Why?!?!?

    Horrible! Lost all my data!

The price ($249) to pay for this Thunderbolt hard drive was perfect for me. I bought it quickly, and picked it up at an Apple Store.

After bringing it home and connecting to my MacBook Air, I was impressed by it's durable exterior protection system. It gave me confidence knowing that I could travel freely w/ this hard drive, without fear of data loss.

    Was I wrong.

After initially transferring some videos, documents, and other media, the hard drive stopped working completely. It just disappeared from Finder, despite reconnecting several times. It didn't even show up in Disk Utility. After several times of trying, it finally showed up after I reversed the cable connection (very peculiar).

Even then, after 15-20 min., the drive disappeared from Finder again. After reconnecting several times, I received a message saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I couldn't even repair the disk using Disk Utility, and was extremely thankful that I didn't format my original hard drive from which I copied the data from.

In all, I am definitely returning this product, will profusely complain directly to LaCie, and strongly recommend you stay way from this product, if you value your data.

    Died after about 3 hours

I bought this drive hoping to speed up TimeMachine backups. I started a new backup to the drive, and left to run errands for several hours. TimeMachine was merrily moving lots of data when I left, said the backup needed about 3 hours more. When I returned, it appeared no data was moving, and the backup said it'd need 3 DAYS to complete.

Attempting to cancel the backup didn't work. Attempts to unmount failed, and ultimately even shutting down the Mac didn't go cleanly. Removing the Thunderbolt cable and power cycling the Mac eventually got the laptop stable.

I tried connecting the drive again via USB, which seemed to work somewhat, and I used that to erase the drive, but it didn't stay running long. The Thunderbolt interface did not work when I tried to connect that way.

I don't understand all these 5 star reviews. They must be wrote by LaCie employees to counter the true lower rates reviews. I bought one and wasn't impressed at all. It ran very hot and the thunderbolt wasn't all that much faster than USB 3.0. It's just a slow thunderbolt drive and lap warmer. LaCie dropped the ball on this one

Don't waste your money. It's pretty slow and gets really hot. Ran bench mark and the thunderbolt and USB 3.0 were basically the same. Better off with a RAID thunderbolt. (This drive only spins at 5400)
