Broke within 1 month, all data lost

    • Written by from Boone

After one month of good, fast, performance the drive stopped showing up on my computer whenever I would plug it in. After speaking with tech support it was determined that it was a hardware problem and, still being under warranty, they said I could get it fixed for free.

However, I was informed that to get any information off of the drive I would have to contact a company called d2Recovery (or someone similarly qualified) who solemnly informed me that the service would be $400 or $1000 depending on what was wrong with the drive.

Waste of money, I'll be asking for a refund and will go with a more reliable company and a more reliable product. If you do go with this company be sure to pay more money for a backup service. Though this is a "rugged" drive it spent all of its time in a computer bag, never had the change to utilize its supposed ruggedness.

I'll be more cautious purchasing any more hardware tacitly endorsed by Apple in the future.

    Disappointed is an understatement here.

Take extreme care with the USB 3.0 port!

    • Written by from Scottsdale

Take care when inserting the USB 3.0 cable into this drive., there is very little internal support for the USB 3 connection. Stick to the Thunderbolt port. Now have to see if they have a thunderbolt/usb adapter so don't have to replace the drive. Design should have been better.

    Disapointed

    • Written by from Helsinki

I was expecting this drive to be very fast, but i don't find it really much faster than any of my earlier drives with regular usb 2.0. I have a Vertex 4 512 gb SSD on my macbook. I just wonder if the 7200 rpm hard drive (lacie) is the problem. I was so impressed about all the 10 gb/s talk, but to copy a 90 gigabyte folder would take 8 minutes...
On the plus side it looks good, but i don't really care at this point

    Great Product

    • Written by

This is a great drive. I use it for backups and for working with videos. It's been doing a great job so far. I like that it is fast, rugged and doesn't need a separate power supply. I'd also like to mention that the 10 GB of cloud storage included with this drive is a pretty nice "extra," as it easily lets me share files with people remotely. And while the amount isn't huge compared to what the drive offers, it's still plenty big enough for lots of photos and video files.

Superb drive, the cable connections are weak

    • Written by from Scarsdale

This drive is fast and appears to be rugged. I bought it for MacBook backups when on the road and to store photos, documents and possibly movies when I travel. The setup was very quick and easy.

The only issue is with the cables and their connections. It is very easy to dislodge the wire, momentarily breaking the connection. I then get an improper drive removal warning. This happens more often with the USB3 cable than with the Thunderbolt one but it happens with that one as well. This is really no big deal but you must be careful not to touch the drive or the wire when transferring or using a file. I have read warnings about the quality of the included cables. Some who have complained about drive failure subsequently discover the problem was just a cable. Understanding this, I bought a quality USB3 and and Apple brand Thunderbolt cable to use if and when the included cables fail.

Overall this is an excellent drive and I am looking forward to many years of service.

    Reliable, rugged backup drive

    • Written by

When I mentioned I wanted a reliable and easy way to do automatic backups, a friend recommended I get this drive. And truly, setting up backups with Time Machine was very easy. What I didn't expect was how easy it would be to also use the encryption software and how useful the cloud storage that's included with the drive turned out to be. Besides, the drive works like a dream.

good drive once you don't use their software

    • Written by from spokane valley

hooked up the drive using the thunderbolt port and installed their software. a big mistake. first thing i noticed is how slow the backup was! 5 hours to back up 40+G of data! the next thing i noticed was how hot the cable and drive was getting....really the drive got so hot it was almost untouchable! i was going to return the drive when i gave it another try using time machine. wow! what a difference. the backup was really fast and everything ran nice and cool. i'm not going to return the drive as of now. their software looks great but it did'nt work for me. also i tried to register this drive several times for two days and every time is said that the server was down. you don't have to register anyway but keep your receipt. overall a good product.

    Great portable drive

I've used LaCie drives for years and they seem to be pretty reliable. I use most of them for editing video, so I carry them around quite a lot and they have never let me down. I like this particular rugged drive a lot because it's slimmer, lighter and faster compared to its older versions. Frankly, if I had to buy another drive today, I wouldn't get anything else.

Not a good drive like other laCies, not worth the buy...Stay away!

    • Written by from Shakopee

Like many others I see the drive missing from finder or sometimes see "This drive not readable need to INITIALIZE", so I simply goto disk utility and repair the drive. Other peculiar issue I see is that it works only in one of the thunderbolt ports of my 2013 MBP 13". Both the ports work just fine, some times it works in the second one when the first one doesn't recognize and happens vice versa. I got this off Amazon, I also bought the seagate extended warranty, just in case it can get handy as we deal with sensitive data. I don't event find speed data transfers, I use BMD Disk Speed test and it gave 37.3 MB/s Read/Write, I wouldn't have bought this if I read this anywhere....
    Thank you,
    Maganti.

    Died in two months

    • Written by from Richmond

Bought this at the Apple store, the guy talked it up a lot. It died in two months, would only power on and click. So now I have to send it to Lacie for repair since I can't return it to Apple.
The newegg reviews for this drive are bad too. I would avoid this drive at all cost.

Every time the drive moves it goes off and I get iOS warning of eject hard drive before removing it. Worked great for 2 months. The cable seems loose.

Works beautifully and was easy to setup. Using it with my MacBook Pro and haven't had any issues at all. The drive is fast, and runs very quietly. I've uploaded my entire music archive on it in no time compared to my old USB2 drive. I also love the build, the rugged design and the reliability.

No real advantage with the Thunderbolt interface

    • Written by from Charlotte

I got this drive to go with my MacBook Pro with Retina display. I was hoping for faster transfer speeds. I ran BlackMagic's speed test on it. It had read/write rates in the 80's. I should have done a little more research. It only have 5400 RMP drive. All of the speed advantages of Thunderbolt are lost due to the slow drive.

Good drive, but not as fast as you expect.

    • Written by from Campobello

The description of this drive is a little misleading. True, it is a Thunderbolt External drive, and Thunderbolt is 10Gbs. But that is 10Gbs to the INTERFACE! On the other side of the interface is a slow, 5400 RPM drive. It was actually slower than my USB 2.0 drive. I am using it to run a virtual Windows 7 machine that was previously on my MacBook Air, built-in SSD drive. When I ran out of space on the SSD, I moved it to the USB and ran it from there. It was adequate, but noticeably slower than before. I decided the Thunderbolt had to be some improvement, but actually ran slower, due to the pretty cheap hard drive. So I decided to void the warranty and take the enclosure apart and install an SSD drive in the enclosure. Now it is extremely fast, but I don't like that I paid $200 for a Thunderbolt enclosure. But it's a nice enclosure.

Great Enclosure for an easy SSD replacement

    • Written by from Cupertino

I bought two of these for the sole purpose of replacing the hard drive with a 256GB Crucial SSD. My file transfer via the Finder performance is about 380MB read and 280MB write. Like some other posts on here, I have seen some unusual disconnect issues with the supplied Thunderbolt cable. I have not had any issues with the white Apple cables nor with the supplied USB 3.0 cable.

    Very slow drive

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

I have this drive and it tests very slow using my 2013 MacBook Pro' Thunderbolt port. I only get USB 2.0 speeds from this drive. I will be selling this drive and buying a true Thunderbolt drive.

    Hardly could be recommended.

    • Written by from Helsinki

After 1/2 year use it stopped to mount. The light's only blinking rapidly but the icon doesn't appear on my desktop. Replugging it gets it run normally.
The drive hasn't hardly ever turned off itself when Mac's going to sleep. The light is still on, and sometimes the drive's running and is very hot.
Bought it in Apple store, and trusted there would not be any unreliable stuff.
If/when I get a replacement it could be the new model with extremely short cable which is practically impossible to use with iMac. Smiley: disappointed.
Oh my, Apple(!) How could I give any star at all? Must 1 be given so it got now one.

    Going to Fail

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

I wouldn't accept this drive even if it was free. If you have data you need, don't trust it on this drive. First drive lasted eleven months and then stopped mounting. Lacie replaced mine under warranty, though I had to pay for the shipping. That doesn't matter. What's worse is that this drive is starting to go, not showing up in Finder or mounting, 2 months later. Hoping to salvage data. This drive is a joke.
