Got it last week, what a blast! Performance is great over Thunderbolt which is perfect for my last year's Mac. At last the rugged portable drive with Thunderbolt.

    An Excellent Buy

    • Written by from Minneapolis

I picked up one of these at my local Apple Store the other day, and it has been working like a dream. I haven't noticed any of problems other users seem to have had. Obviously it doesn't stay ice-cold when you've got it plugged in and working full-tilt. Likewise, it won't perform as fast as say, the SSD versions on Thunderbolt, but comparing it to USB and FW800 drives I also use, this sucker is wicked fast!

    Works well

I got one of these for backing up my laptop when I'm travelling. I wanted something a little bit rugged, I've had other harddrives get dropped and stop working. This looked like it could handle a bit of rough treatment. It runs off USB 3 so it's plenty fast.

    Excellent drive

I have one of these for work. I'm working a lot in Photoshop and some of the files are just enormous.. I backup all my files onto this drive, and it's also useful for sharing files. I can copy files from it onto other people's computers quickly, or I can use the online backup software to share files that way.

    Great Rugged Drive

    • Written by

I do a lot of video work in the field and I needed a rugged drive for transferring footage off the HD cameras. This drive works great – it's USB 3, so it can transfer HD files quickly – but it's also a sturdy drive that can handle a drop or two. I use a couple of these to transfer footage off our cameras and drive back to the production facility.

    Definitely my favorite

I already had 4 other Lacie rugged hard drives from older generations before that one. They are the only hard drives I trust to carry with me.
They have always been robust but also handy and fast.
This great when he travel and take photos of my trip. At least I always have a backup of the pictures I transferred to my macbook pro.
I have been waiting for the thunderbolt version.
I don't why it took so long for Lacie to release but I have to say it was worth the wait.
I like the new design, it really feels sturdy and reliable. And thunderbolt is really fast! Such a release! All transfers are so quick, i don't feel like I'm wasting my time any more. My thumbs up for that one!

    GOOD product

I have a Mac Book Air that I bought in May and was looking for something faster than USB2 (since I didn't get the USB3 upgrade :( ). This one does the job pretty well. Speed is good over 110MB/s and the product looks very nice.

I ran a lot of I/Os while I was backing up my Mac (SSD) and then did some FCP, the drive behave very nicely.

I don't know what kind of application gets the drive hot like other are mentioning but after heavy beating, it got warmer than idle but nothing worth mentioning.

    **** GREAT DRIVE...TESTED 30 OF THEM!!! ****

    • Written by from Thunder Bay

I teach at a Canadian college in Northern Ontario and we purchased 30 of these for our 1st year students. The USB 3.0 port broke on 2 of them, so be careful not to force the connector in the wrong way. The Thunderbolt is very durable and has not broken on any of the devices. I have used mine since January of 2013 and I cannot believe the speed and reliability. My own test shows 6 Gigs being transfered in 55 seconds on both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0. Test repeated 20 times. Great value...buy this disk!

    Great portable drive

I bought one of these drives for my photography studio. I like to shoot and edit in the same space, so I keep one of these drives on hand to store files and move them around. This drive is fast so it's great for working with high-res RAW files and even the occasional HD video.

Great for Final Cut Pro X

    • Written by from Gig Harbor

I bought this for a long trip to Costa Rica. I wanted to work on a surfing movie while we were there, and I was worried about bogging down my laptop with so much data. I was skeptical about how fast the processing and transferring of files would be with this when using Final Cut Pro X, but it worked flawlessly. It is also nice that it can just rest on the laptop itself when needed, such as on an airplane. I could not be happier with this external hard drive. In fact, I will probably use more of these as more projects accumulate. I would highly recommend this for any use, but especially as a travel solution.

Needed a fast new drive to use with my MacBook. Opted for this one because it's rugged and has USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. It's compact, very portable and allows to quickly and painlessly transfer a ton of data on the go. All in all, this drive makes a perfect addition to my new MacBook.

Fast, rugged, reliable. The installation was painless. The drive works great with my Macbook Air. And my Time Machine backups are very quick now. The aluminum casing and orange rubber bumper look and feel great. I frankly can't find one bad thing to say about this drive.

I'm studying broadcast journalism at uni, and I needed a drive to store my project files on. This is great, it stores plenty of footage, and it's rugged enough that I can carry it with me everywhere. It works well with my MacBook with iMovie.

I needed a solid portable drive for my work. This drive seemed to be exactly what I was looking for, so I gave it a try. It's fast, and was easy to set up. It's also drop-resistant, and well built. The design matches my Macbook Pro nicely. Overall the experience with this product has been very smooth so far.

    Excellent Portable Drive

    • Written by

I needed a reliable portable solution to backup my work files, and this drive fit the bill perfectly. The data is encrypted, so it's doubly secure and there's also access to the secure cloud storage. The performance has been very good so I haven't experienced any issues with this drive at all, and it's been a bit more than a month.

    Works like a charm

For security, I used to always copy the files I needed for a meeting onto a usb stick rather than taking the drive with all of the supporting documentation. Thankfully with the encryption that comes with the Rugged, I know that my data is secure so rather than waste time copying a few files, I can take the drive with me. The drive has good speeds, and it has not given me any connection problems using USB3 or Thunderbolt.
