    Great mobile drive

    • Written by

This is an awesome drive, really easy to use, very fast and reliable. I fling mine around in my bag as I'm riding to work on my bike and it's never failed me once. The casing is well designed and seems to be pretty accident resistant, and I love the thunderbolt connection as it works brilliantly with my mac book pro.

    Fantastic Drive

    • Written by

The Thunderbolt speeds are great, and this drive is very fast. It's great for taking out on location for backing up my sound and video recordings. It's ultra quiet, and the tough casing keeps it safe from everyday shocks and bumps. I had no problems with it so far.

    Works Great

The aluminum enclosure and rubber bumper look and feel great. The drive seems to be solid and well built. The setup was a breeze. Both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces deliver very high speed data transfers. I frankly can't find one bad thing to say about this drive.

    Good So Far

I needed a portable drive to transfer data between various office sites. I did my fair share of looking around before deciding on this model, and was very happy when I found it. It offers a nice solid design, great speeds, as well as an attractive feature set. It's been nearly six months and so far so good.

    Rugged, fast, quiet

    • Written by from Houston

I use this drive with my MyBook Pro. It's compact, rugged, bus-powered, and very quiet. It's also very fast with USB 3. I'm using it for backup. It hasn't given me any trouble in the six months I've had it.

Read the specifications written on the box first

    • Written by from Oakland

The main issue is its rotational disk speed, 5400rpm, which is written on the box but it is not given by apple's website on its description...what a convenient thing, isn't it?
I was wondering why it was so cheap...thunderbolt is cool but hooked to a slow drive doesn't help. I gave 2 stars because I still like these kind of hard drives but certainly I'm mad at myself for not reading the specifications written on the box when I grabbed it after I bought my laptop...I guess I was too exited to pay attention to details.

    Great mobile drive

We've bought a handful of these drives for our office, and so far they have all performed admirably in the field. They are being used as back up drives, and formatted as boot backups too. I am very pleased with the compact size of the drives and their robust nature.

    Died in two months

    • Written by from Richmond

Bought this at the Apple store, the guy talked it up a lot. It died in two months, would only power on and click. So now I have to send it to Lacie for repair since I can't return it to Apple.
The newegg reviews for this drive are bad too. I would avoid this drive at all cost.

    Excellent Portable Drive

    • Written by

I bought a couple of these drives for backing up data on film shoots. It's not worth the risk to have all the data in one drive, but with the USB 3 and Thunderbolt interfaces on this drive I can connect several of them to my MBP and have duplicates made simultaneously, and send them back to base.

    Fast but Failed

This device only lasted 2 months. It started out fast, but it died within 2 months causing me to loose personal family photos that can not be recovered. Very upset.

I needed a new portable external drive for video editing for my new MacBook Pro. I talked to my friends and colleagues, looked at different options and finally decided to go for this Rugged drive and so far I've been very happy with the results. It's plenty fast. I can easily take it anywhere with me and know that my files are safe because the drive is rugged. The Thunderbolt connection is an added bonus in my eyes.

I needed a drive that I knew would still survive if the kids managed to reach up onto the desk when I wasn't looking, the natural solution was the Rugged. The 1TB unit holds the backups of the family videos and it is nice and easy to carry it around when we visit the grandparents.

    LOVE THIS LITTLE DEVICE !!!

    • Written by from Helotes

The size is great and you can easily transport it. The speed is supa dupa fast!!! It has cut my file transfers and clone backups in half the time. I love using this at my desktop and then just tossing it in my messenger bag when I need to. Yes I did say TOSS... it's rugged enough for it. Unlike some other backup drives, this is also QUIET... shhhhhhhhh... lol ... Last the only negative thing I'd say about it is, I wish it came with a bit longer cord. That's it folks!

After several months of far from "gentle" use, I'm still very happy that I bought this drive. It is very sturdy, reliable and definitely has fast transfer speeds. I am very happy to recommend it to others.

Great Enclosure for an easy SSD replacement

    • Written by from Cupertino

I bought two of these for the sole purpose of replacing the hard drive with a 256GB Crucial SSD. My file transfer via the Finder performance is about 380MB read and 280MB write. Like some other posts on here, I have seen some unusual disconnect issues with the supplied Thunderbolt cable. I have not had any issues with the white Apple cables nor with the supplied USB 3.0 cable.

    Works like a charm

    • Written by

For security, I used to always copy the files I needed for a meeting onto a usb stick rather than taking the drive with all of the supporting documentation. Thankfully with the encryption that comes with the Rugged, I know that my data is secure so rather than waste time copying a few files, I can take the drive with me. The drive has good speeds, and it has not given me any connection problems using USB3 or Thunderbolt.

Broke within 1 month, all data lost

    • Written by from Boone

After one month of good, fast, performance the drive stopped showing up on my computer whenever I would plug it in. After speaking with tech support it was determined that it was a hardware problem and, still being under warranty, they said I could get it fixed for free.

However, I was informed that to get any information off of the drive I would have to contact a company called d2Recovery (or someone similarly qualified) who solemnly informed me that the service would be $400 or $1000 depending on what was wrong with the drive.

Waste of money, I'll be asking for a refund and will go with a more reliable company and a more reliable product. If you do go with this company be sure to pay more money for a backup service. Though this is a "rugged" drive it spent all of its time in a computer bag, never had the change to utilize its supposed ruggedness.

I'll be more cautious purchasing any more hardware tacitly endorsed by Apple in the future.

    Disappointed is an understatement here.

    Rugged and Reliable

    • Written by

I do a lot of travelling so this drive was the logical choice for me. After 3 trips, I am yet to have any problems due to how sturdy the exterior casing is. I can quickly and easily access not only any files that I have backed up to it, but it's also a good way to backup my photos from my camera.

Take extreme care with the USB 3.0 port!

    • Written by from Scottsdale

Take care when inserting the USB 3.0 cable into this drive., there is very little internal support for the USB 3 connection. Stick to the Thunderbolt port. Now have to see if they have a thunderbolt/usb adapter so don't have to replace the drive. Design should have been better.
