    impressive design, excellent speeds

    • Written by

This little drive definitely packs a punch. It's very solid, has got more than enough storage capacity for my needs and I'm still amazed even today at how much faster the USB 3.0 is compared to my old unit. Now I don't have to sit around and wait half an hour for my work to copy over. Nifty all around!

The drive works well. Both Thunderbolt and USB3 speeds are good. The enclosure is fairly durable and compact. The drive meets all my expectations. Wouldn't get anything else.

    Great Rugged Drive

    • Written by

Rugged, tough, and shock-proof, this little guy has saved my bacon numerous times so far. I'm not the most gentle computer user and my laptop has war wounds to prove it. This is the best rugged drive for people like me, and I'm sure that I'm not alone in my demands on gear.

    Rugged and Reliable

I do a lot of travelling so this drive was the logical choice for me. After 3 trips, I am yet to have any problems due to how sturdy the exterior casing is. I can quickly and easily access not only any files that I have backed up to it, but it's also a good way to backup my photos from my camera.

It's nice to know that this drive is able to take the knocks that come with daily life, and I don't have to gingerly place it in my bag every time I leave my office. I've been using it for more than five months now.

I do a lot of graphics editing and prefer to work on an external drive if possible so I can carry the files around easily. This is by far the best unit I've tried recently and it's keeping up with everything I throw at it. The speeds are great. The drive works great with my iMac. I don't have to worry about lag anymore and the 1TB is the perfect size for my needs.

    great rugged drive

High speed, compact size, light weight, rugged design - this is one indispensable piece of equipment in my 'road warrior' toolkit. And the encryption software that comes already loaded on the drive makes using it a better experience. All in all, I'm really satisfied with this product and have even recommended this hardware to my friends.

The first thing that struck my eye about this drive was its MIL spec compliance. Between that, the encryption software that comes with the unit, and the high-visibility orange rubber "bumper", I feel confident that the risk to my data due to either accident or malevolent intent is low. That said, the high-speed USB 3.0 transfer rate is icing on the cake.

The aluminum enclosure and rubber bumper look and feel great. The drive seems to be solid and well built. The setup was a breeze. Both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces deliver very high speed data transfers. I frankly can't find one bad thing to say about this drive.

I needed a portable, large capacity drive that would work with my Macs/PCs

    • Written by from Beaverton

For transferring files between Macs and PCs I needed a drive that would let me go from Mac to PC and back without spending a lot of money. For maximum speed, I could have gone with the SSD version of this drive, but I wanted capacity.

For older Macs, the drive connects via USB 2.0, and I am seeing about 30MB/sec thruput. I see similar speeds with Windows PCs using USB 2.0, too.

Some of the newer Windows PCs I encounter have USB 3.0 ports, but I see speeds ranging from 30MB/sec up to 100MB/sec with this drive. I guess performance depends on the implementation of the USB 3.0 interface in some of those PCs.

On the Mac side, there are some Macs that provide USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt ports, I like the flexibility that the faster Thunderbolt port provides, as I consistantly experience 100+MB/sec performance; definiitely faster than what USB 2.0 provides. On the newer Macs that have both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, I am seeing the same performance on both ports.

I like the drive since I only need a cable and the drive. No need to lug around a power supply. It is a great general purpose drive that addresses my need to copy files to all the Windows and OS X computers I encounter. Just need to make sure the drive is formatted as FAT32 for this kind of application, since that is the only format that both operating systems will reliably read/write files without special driver software.

There is a great app from Mediafour, MacDrive which permits read/write access to Mac formatted drives, but that is software one would need to purchase.

When I need the speed, I am happy with the SSD version of this drive. No complaints with its nearly 400MB/sec performance. I'm only limited space - 120GB or 256GB.

    Thunderboly Iffy?

    • Written by from DOLLARD-DES-ORMEAUX

So my thunderbolt cable stopped working after a full day. I'm using the USB cable now & it's working fine & is a lot cooler than when I was using thunderbolt (the drive itself).

It makes me feel really iffy using thunderbolt which is a shame because I bought it specifically for that as every other port on my macbook is occupied.

The option to daisy chain would've been nice too.

This drive works great, and does what it's supposed to do. Setting it up was easy. Thunderbolt connection works well. The drive itself is very solid, and runs very quietly. I keep my entire work archive on it. Good value.

    Failed right after return period

    • Written by from Tacoma

This drive was great...while it worked. It stopped mounting to both my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air shortly after the 'no questions' return period ended. I can hear the drive rev up, but its LED flashes incessantly, and it won't mount to the desktop or show up in Disk Utility. The workarounds posted online don't work.

I've had really good luck with LaCie drives in the past, but this is a horrible, horrible product! Apple should be concerned to see such a high-profile product as this drive fail the promise of Thunderbolt so miserably.

One last nit: Both ends of the Thunderbolt cable get so hot with this drive, that it actually makes the side of the MacBook that it's plugged into uncomfortably hot to rest your palm on to type.
