Great for Final Cut Pro X

    • Written by from Gig Harbor

I bought this for a long trip to Costa Rica. I wanted to work on a surfing movie while we were there, and I was worried about bogging down my laptop with so much data. I was skeptical about how fast the processing and transferring of files would be with this when using Final Cut Pro X, but it worked flawlessly. It is also nice that it can just rest on the laptop itself when needed, such as on an airplane. I could not be happier with this external hard drive. In fact, I will probably use more of these as more projects accumulate. I would highly recommend this for any use, but especially as a travel solution.

    Great item!

Needed a fast new drive to use with my MacBook. Opted for this one because it's rugged and has USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. It's compact, very portable and allows to quickly and painlessly transfer a ton of data on the go. All in all, this drive makes a perfect addition to my new MacBook.

    Does the job

Fast, rugged, reliable. The installation was painless. The drive works great with my Macbook Air. And my Time Machine backups are very quick now. The aluminum casing and orange rubber bumper look and feel great. I frankly can't find one bad thing to say about this drive.

I'm studying broadcast journalism at uni, and I needed a drive to store my project files on. This is great, it stores plenty of footage, and it's rugged enough that I can carry it with me everywhere. It works well with my MacBook with iMovie.

    Horrible! Lost all my data!

    • Written by from Rochester

The price ($249) to pay for this Thunderbolt hard drive was perfect for me. I bought it quickly, and picked it up at an Apple Store.

After bringing it home and connecting to my MacBook Air, I was impressed by it's durable exterior protection system. It gave me confidence knowing that I could travel freely w/ this hard drive, without fear of data loss.

    Was I wrong.

After initially transferring some videos, documents, and other media, the hard drive stopped working completely. It just disappeared from Finder, despite reconnecting several times. It didn't even show up in Disk Utility. After several times of trying, it finally showed up after I reversed the cable connection (very peculiar).

Even then, after 15-20 min., the drive disappeared from Finder again. After reconnecting several times, I received a message saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I couldn't even repair the disk using Disk Utility, and was extremely thankful that I didn't format my original hard drive from which I copied the data from.

In all, I am definitely returning this product, will profusely complain directly to LaCie, and strongly recommend you stay way from this product, if you value your data.

    Nice Little Drive

I needed a solid portable drive for my work. This drive seemed to be exactly what I was looking for, so I gave it a try. It's fast, and was easy to set up. It's also drop-resistant, and well built. The design matches my Macbook Pro nicely. Overall the experience with this product has been very smooth so far.

    Excellent Portable Drive

    • Written by

I needed a reliable portable solution to backup my work files, and this drive fit the bill perfectly. The data is encrypted, so it's doubly secure and there's also access to the secure cloud storage. The performance has been very good so I haven't experienced any issues with this drive at all, and it's been a bit more than a month.

I have loved this back up since day one. All you do is plug it in and it will do the rest for you! 1TB was definitely the way to go. Plus, it is basically indestructible which is perfect for a college student like me. Definitely a great investment!

This is a great product, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has a laptop, or indeed anyone who needs portable storage. This is very handy to have around in your bag for those emergency moments. It has been very fast and solid as a rock since the day I unpacked it.

    Works like a charm

    • Written by

For security, I used to always copy the files I needed for a meeting onto a usb stick rather than taking the drive with all of the supporting documentation. Thankfully with the encryption that comes with the Rugged, I know that my data is secure so rather than waste time copying a few files, I can take the drive with me. The drive has good speeds, and it has not given me any connection problems using USB3 or Thunderbolt.

    Not "Rugged" at all

    • Written by from San Francisco

I have a dozen Lacie drives(nine of them are older "Rugged" models). I've never had a problem, though I know colleagues who have. I bought the 1TB Thunderbolt Series and was pretty happy with it until it took a short and not-very-hard fall off my coffee table. The impact was much less than some of the drops that have occurred with my other drives. But this one died. As far as I'm concerned they advertise this model as being something it is not. The worst part, however, is dealing with Lacie's support. They couldn't care less and seem more interested in forcing you to use their overpriced data recovery service by implying that if you don't they might not honor the warranty. I think I'm done with Lacie.

    Great high speed HDD!

    • Written by from Manlius

Bought one for video editing as my other LaCie 500GB triple (USB 3.0 and FW800 only) filled up. These are such great hard drives. I get 95MB/s to 120MB/s all the time, usually closer to 105MB/s which is perfect for video editing. Very pleased, might pick up another one! I wish they had a 2 or 3TB version with the same performance as I would have definitely jumped on this.

    Thunderbolt cable dead

    • Written by from Ottawa

    Hi,
Like many on here, I have suffered a dead Thunderbolt cable.

Using this drive with the provided Thunderbolt cable, I ran into issues. At first I thought the drive was too hot and I let it cool down before trying it again. Nothing. The drive didn't spin up nor did the light come on.

Today I was able to try the USB3.0 connector and that worked fine. So I gave the Thunderbolt cable another try... nothing.

I took another Thunderbolt cable from my single other device with Thunderbolt and that worked! Never have I ever seen a cable being the source of issues. I was certain that the drive was flakey or that the issues were related to the iMac Im using this with.

You would think with an expensive cable such as a TB cable you would have better quality control. I'm very disappointed with this.

    Come on LaCie, WTH??

I have to say that the speed of TB when this was working was amazing. Working with large files is so easy and unreal. I *was* loving it.

Best hard drive I ever had!

    • Written by from Waterloo

Buying the Thunderbolt cable was expensive, and a lot of hard drives don't offer a Thunderbolt cable. But after seeing LaCie hard drive that comes with a Thunderbolt port, I was eager to buy this product. After I used it to connect on my new iMac 2013, I was surprised by the time it took to transfer a 10Gb file I wanted to backup onto my hard drive. It took less than 1 minutes. I was happy that Apple had made a wonderful desktop, and LaCie had made a wonderfully compatible hard drive with it. LOVE THE PRODUCT!

    Works Great

    • Written by

So far so good. The drive works just as expected. It's pretty much plug and play and very fast with USB3. It's the perfect size to easily slide into the bag I'm taking with me wherever I go. 1TB holds all of my work files and backups. All in all, it's been good to me and I'd definitely recommend it.
