Got it last week, what a blast! Performance is great over Thunderbolt which is perfect for my last year's Mac. At last the rugged portable drive with Thunderbolt.

I picked up one of these at my local Apple Store the other day, and it has been working like a dream. I haven't noticed any of problems other users seem to have had. Obviously it doesn't stay ice-cold when you've got it plugged in and working full-tilt. Likewise, it won't perform as fast as say, the SSD versions on Thunderbolt, but comparing it to USB and FW800 drives I also use, this sucker is wicked fast!

I got one of these for backing up my laptop when I'm travelling. I wanted something a little bit rugged, I've had other harddrives get dropped and stop working. This looked like it could handle a bit of rough treatment. It runs off USB 3 so it's plenty fast.

    Died after about 3 hours

I bought this drive hoping to speed up TimeMachine backups. I started a new backup to the drive, and left to run errands for several hours. TimeMachine was merrily moving lots of data when I left, said the backup needed about 3 hours more. When I returned, it appeared no data was moving, and the backup said it'd need 3 DAYS to complete.

Attempting to cancel the backup didn't work. Attempts to unmount failed, and ultimately even shutting down the Mac didn't go cleanly. Removing the Thunderbolt cable and power cycling the Mac eventually got the laptop stable.

I tried connecting the drive again via USB, which seemed to work somewhat, and I used that to erase the drive, but it didn't stay running long. The Thunderbolt interface did not work when I tried to connect that way.

    Where's the Thunderbolt passthrough?

For a peripheral that can only be daisy chained using Thunderbolt, this devices is seriously missing a passthrough port. Hey, even the older one had something to this sort, with the Firewire 400 and 800 ports on it I could daisy chain more devices together even if it meant one was running at a slower 400 speed.

There is no excuse for not having a passthrough port.

Was this useful? Where's the Thunderbolt passthrough?

I have one of these for work. I'm working a lot in Photoshop and some of the files are just enormous.. I backup all my files onto this drive, and it's also useful for sharing files. I can copy files from it onto other people's computers quickly, or I can use the online backup software to share files that way.

    Great Rugged Drive

I do a lot of video work in the field and I needed a rugged drive for transferring footage off the HD cameras. This drive works great – it's USB 3, so it can transfer HD files quickly – but it's also a sturdy drive that can handle a drop or two. I use a couple of these to transfer footage off our cameras and drive back to the production facility.

I already had 4 other Lacie rugged hard drives from older generations before that one. They are the only hard drives I trust to carry with me.
They have always been robust but also handy and fast.
This great when he travel and take photos of my trip. At least I always have a backup of the pictures I transferred to my macbook pro.
I have been waiting for the thunderbolt version.
I don't why it took so long for Lacie to release but I have to say it was worth the wait.
I like the new design, it really feels sturdy and reliable. And thunderbolt is really fast! Such a release! All transfers are so quick, i don't feel like I'm wasting my time any more. My thumbs up for that one!

I have a Mac Book Air that I bought in May and was looking for something faster than USB2 (since I didn't get the USB3 upgrade :( ). This one does the job pretty well. Speed is good over 110MB/s and the product looks very nice.

I ran a lot of I/Os while I was backing up my Mac (SSD) and then did some FCP, the drive behave very nicely.

I don't know what kind of application gets the drive hot like other are mentioning but after heavy beating, it got warmer than idle but nothing worth mentioning.

Don't Fault the Drive, Fault the Cable (Spoiler: Replace Thunderbolt Cable)

As other reviews have noted, I encountered the same issue with the LaCie Thunderbolt drive, randomly vanishing from finder and not being read by the computer (yes, even disk utility).

The purpose for getting this drive was to utilize the thunderbolt port on the new retina 15" pro. My previous LaCie Rugged Firewire 800 drive has been a beast, and top performer, so my confidence was high in getting this unit.

After transferring ~400GB of files and closing in on a completed iPhoto album and iTunes library, the drive vanished causing the transfers to fail (Gotta love it!).

    Trouble shooting:
    - (Thunderbolt cable) Unplugged and reconnected, no response
    - (Thunderbolt cable) Swapped cables ends, fast blinking light, still not read by OSX
    - (USB 3.0) Plugged in, was immediately recognized (transferred files to confirm)
    - (Thunderbolt cable) After successful USB 3.0 transfer tried thunderbolt, same results as 1& 2

Feeling that the drive and thunderbolt connectors reached a pretty warm temperature, I let it cool and tried the above again, thinking that might be the cause. Same results.

Today I tried an Apple Thunderbolt cable ($49.00, yikes!), plugged it in and it was immediately recognized and able to transfer files.

For an already pricy drive, the need for an additional thunderbolt cable due to the LaCie OEM failing, is unacceptable.

It's a nice rugged drive, and I hope to get the same milage as my last, so it shouldn't be faulted in full. However, with the amount of time, money, and energy wasted in getting this drive to function as it should out of the box....I can only give two stars.

I don't understand all these 5 star reviews. They must be wrote by LaCie employees to counter the true lower rates reviews. I bought one and wasn't impressed at all. It ran very hot and the thunderbolt wasn't all that much faster than USB 3.0. It's just a slow thunderbolt drive and lap warmer. LaCie dropped the ball on this one

After hearing all the thunderbolt hype I finally bought this drive. Once home, I tested it against my LaCie 2 TB little big disk with FireWire And there was minimal difference and by minimal, I mean seconds. Will be returning.

I bought one of these drives for my photography studio. I like to shoot and edit in the same space, so I keep one of these drives on hand to store files and move them around. This drive is fast so it's great for working with high-res RAW files and even the occasional HD video.

Don't waste your money. It's pretty slow and gets really hot. Ran bench mark and the thunderbolt and USB 3.0 were basically the same. Better off with a RAID thunderbolt. (This drive only spins at 5400)

Needed a fast new drive to use with my MacBook. Opted for this one because it's rugged and has USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. It's compact, very portable and allows to quickly and painlessly transfer a ton of data on the go. All in all, this drive makes a perfect addition to my new MacBook.

Great for Final Cut Pro X

I bought this for a long trip to Costa Rica. I wanted to work on a surfing movie while we were there, and I was worried about bogging down my laptop with so much data. I was skeptical about how fast the processing and transferring of files would be with this when using Final Cut Pro X, but it worked flawlessly. It is also nice that it can just rest on the laptop itself when needed, such as on an airplane. I could not be happier with this external hard drive. In fact, I will probably use more of these as more projects accumulate. I would highly recommend this for any use, but especially as a travel solution.

Fast, rugged, reliable. The installation was painless. The drive works great with my Macbook Air. And my Time Machine backups are very quick now. The aluminum casing and orange rubber bumper look and feel great. I frankly can't find one bad thing to say about this drive.
